READ-A-THON UPDATES

There are some misunderstanding about ALL the team members needed to participate to get points.

Well, they DON'T

If a team has 12 members and only 4 want to participate, that team can still earn all the points available.

We'll consider that team a team of FOUR elements to the Read-a-Thon only.

md | 83 comments I nearly had a heart attack when I saw I was going to have to read 600 pages so I'm glad I only have to read a min of 300. Though I will now have to stop looking for fantasy books with a blue cover and start hunting through for historicals. Think that's going to be way harder.

Does it have to be something GR classes as historical?

No, it is just our theme. Anything you can connect to being at least 50 years ago. The book can be written at least 50 years ago(i.e. classics), be set in time at least 50 years ago(i.e. historical fiction), have or be about characters from at least 50 years ago(i.e. could travel from past and end up in future), biographies of people who lived at least 50 years ago, etc.

For example, I am planning to read a Sherlock Holmes book, Tea is planning a classic book, Dee has 11/22/63 which is a recent book but deals with John F Kennedy 50 years ago.

You are not required to read the theme book. If you can't find one or only want a blue cover or just have a 300 page book you are dying to read but doesn't fit the categories, that is fine as well.

message 206: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments It looks like one book can't be used for both cover and theme. So those of you who'll read only one book, can choose which one (if any) you'll read.

Melissa (ladybug) | 1048 comments Don't know what I will be reading. :D

message 208: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) so to reiterate,
I need to look to read books that are either have a Blue cover or count as Historical for extra points. But all the other books I read that 2 week period will still count towards my 1500 pages?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments That's right.

You only need one blue cover and/or one historical to get an extra point for those options if you want to. These two options for extra points can not be the same book, you will need to read one of each to get both extra points. You do not have to read them if you can't find one or don't want to.

All the other books, as well as those two optional books, finished during the 11 day period will count towards your total page goal. Therefore, any books started before May 1st but finished during the 11 day period will count towards your page goal.

*Note to think about: Any book marked as read during this time will count towards your page goal. However, do not tag those books with less than 160 on your shelf since they will not count towards the overall book count for the team.

The only reason I know what I'll be reading (well part of it) is because I'm currently reading classic book (well two actually, but only one will count for extra points) and have one with blue cover waiting in line :D

Dee Gonzalez (chacho65) I have almost 100 books at home that I haven't read...I looked at them the other day and thought what I going to when I've read them...then thought who am I kidding I will bought more to keep it stock piled!! Haha

message 217: by Dee Gonzalez (new)

Dee Gonzalez (chacho65) Sorry for the extremely horrendous grammar. My pudgy fingers are working faster than my brain.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I have at least 20 books checked out from my library waiting to be read. I haven't even counted the ones I own piling up on my bookshelves and ereader yet.

I am hoping I can keep up my book a day for the rest of the month, though, since I have 7 books to be read by the end of the month to complete all my April challenges. Luckily, I have 3 of them started already and 2 more are young adult books which are usually a faster read for me.

Next month I probably won't average a book a day since I will be reading 2 books with over 1000 pages and that will slow me down a bit. It works out nicely for our pages read-a-thon, however. I will be reading lots and lots of pages. I think I am going to try to read 200 pgs of each per day starting May 1st and then I can get both of them to count for the read-a-thon and have all my hard reading done in the first half of the month.

Yes, I love her Tortall books. I used to read and reread them all the time

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I still reread them about once a year. However, this year, one of my goals is to not reread anything except for Agatha Christie since I need to reread some of those for a series challenge to read all her Hercule Poirot books. So far I am doing pretty well, I have only reread one book, and I only did that because I needed a quick read fast to finish out a monthly challenge.

I thought this would help clear out my TBR list, but I just keep adding and adding and adding:)

message 224: by joanne (new)

joanne (cabeswaters) I regularly go through my TBR list and delete any book I've lost interest in, to keep the number low. Still have 100+ though... Reading other people's reviews definitely helps me manage that.

I liked it. Not exactly an unexpected ending but it was my first Rizzoli book and after watching the TV show I had to try the series.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) I have on May Starter Plan (and yes, I have a May & June Reading Plan, LOL):
Ten Tiny Breaths (Ten Tiny Breaths, #1) by K.A. Tucker Finding the Lost (Sentinel Wars, #2) by Shannon K. Butcher

and audiobook Georgina Kincaid book 3: Succubus Dreams (Georgina Kincaid, #3) by Richelle Mead Succubus dreams (Succubus, #3) by Richelle Mead

message 233: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments You really plan your reading upfront? I can't usually decide what next. :D
The only time I plan is when there is some challenge that has to be planed (like blue cover :)). But usually I read what I'm in the mood for and that try to fit it into the challenge.

message 234: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) I don't see how people can just pick at random. It seems so disorganized and chaotic.

My Starter Plans give me a to-do list of sorts.
Plus
*sighing* I am addicted to challenges, and I think I am in 36 of them.
So I have to have a spread sheet to organize my groups, monthly, quarterly and yearly challenges.
Plus, with group reads, buddy reads, I have to know where I am supposed to be, and when.

for instance, for here, I know I need blue & HR, so I right now I don't have an HR in my May Starter Plan, so I have to move one of my June audiobooks up Seduce Me at Sunrise (The Hathaways, #2) by Lisa Kleypas .

message 235: by Dee Gonzalez (new)

Dee Gonzalez (chacho65) I'm with you Tea, I am a random reader..even though I have the books picked out for the remainder of the year..I highly doubt those are the ones I will end up reading.

I get enough of having a schedule and planning at work..whatever I'm in the mood for is what I usually pick. I mean I have like 100 books to chose from. The only remotely planned book reading I do is if its a series...and sometimes even I don't finish it one after the other.

message 236: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I just counted my challenges - 23! I have no idea where they all came from. :D Most of them are long term (yearly). I've mostly stopped with monthly ones because I always had too many of them and too little time to read all the books for them. Maybe there is something in that planning.

Do we need to start a group support for challenge-addicted? :D

message 237: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) every once in a while I will just read a book, but it's hard. starter plans are like road maps. I can't just get into my car and drive, or I'll get lost.

LMAO, but I admire Spontaneous reads. Every month, 2-3 unplanned books slip in.
right now, I am struggling not to read Eden (Eden #1) by Janelle Stalder & Fish & Chips (Cut & Run, #3) by Abigail Roux . They are on my May plan, but I really want to jump into them now.

message 238: by Melissa (ladybug) (new)

Melissa (ladybug) | 1048 comments I am also a random reader, but I have a shelf labeled to read in [specific year]. These are books I hope to read that specific year.

message 239: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I promised myself not to start with Touch & Geaux before I finish books I'm reading at the moment (those that are dragging). And I didn't. But I did read 5 others in the meantime. :D

message 240: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) that's how I ended up here. Challenges.

I do challenges because they force me to read books that I wouldn't normally read. I tend to read books in order, opting to finish series before reading new books. Challenges force me to consider other books and as a result, I have so many series that I haven't completed.

message 241: by Dee Gonzalez (new)

Dee Gonzalez (chacho65) I must seem like an unstable, chaotic, chicken w my head cut off...I just pick up and go with a lot of things in my life...HA.

I love to read and currently I'm in a reading phase..because of this challenge though it is forcing me(its a good thing) to stay in a reading phase.. :)

message 245: by Dee Gonzalez (new)

message 246: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Because of those light reads I'm glad I've switched to ebooks. :D They are not very practical for reading in the bus :)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I try to make a plan for the month, but I usually change about half of them during the month. My two 1000 pg books I need to read for May I can't change though. I made sure to pick one that has a blue cover and one that is historical to make me read them early in the month. I tend to procrastinate with extra long books. Plus, I would never have time get through a different one and read all the other books I want to.

If you're a headless chicken, then what am I? I just browse through the library/bookshop and grab whatever takes my fancy. A lot of the time ill get a book 'just in case' I want to read it, then end up returning it unread...

What are your books? I decided to read The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #1-3) by Cassandra Clare . It is page 2450 or something like that for the box set. I couldn't find something else that I would work that wasn't Harry Potter. My other choices like Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1) by Terry Goodkind or Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon weren't 1000 pages

message 250: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Apr 24, 2013 05:54PM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I am going to read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and World Without End (The Pillars of the Earth, #2) by Ken Follett . I have them on my holdshelf waiting to be checked out closer to May and both are barely over 1000 pgs.

I am pretty sure I will like World Without End. It is the sequel to Pillars of the Earth which I read for my book group last year and really enjoyed.

I am not as sure about Infinite Jest, but it had a blue cover and was over 1000 pgs. I actually do have another option of Under the Dome by Stephen King for my second 1000 pg book in case I really can't get into Infinite Jest, then I will find a different book with a blue cover:
Sweet Laurel Falls (Hope's Crossing, #3) by RaeAnne Thayne Did You Miss Me? by Karen Rose are two other books I have planned to read at the beginning of May.
