We are having team vs. team read-a-thon.Winner (team with most points) will get 4 books added to their challenge. And there are plenty of opportunities to get points.
Basically those who want to participate in this read-a-thon needs to give page count they'll read in that period. And unfortunately that only counts for finished books.

What's the time period?
Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron wrote: "What's the time period?"I'll copy/paste everything :D
~Round II - Tower Teams Read-a-Thon~
◈ Duration: May 1st PST 8:00 AM (GMT 4PM) to May 11th 8:00 AM (GMT 4 PM)
◈ Participants commit to a “read-as-much-as-you-can event.”
◈ Team’s Page Goal: Each participant sets a page goal – the total sum of goals from each team member will be the Team's Page Goal.
For example:
Participants for team Cadet Blue
Mary (J) - 800 pages
Sonia - 1000 pages
ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) - 600 pages
800+1000+600 = 2400
The Goal for Team Cadet Blue will be 2400 pages
◈ Points for:
*1 point per member reaching goal
*20 points if 50% of the team members reach page goal
*30 points if team goal is reached
*50 points if all the team members reach page goal
◈ Each team should choose a theme for the read-a-thon and read at least one book representing that theme.
*1 point per book read
*30 points if 50% of team members read a book representing the theme
*50 points if all the team members read a book representing the theme
◈ Each of them should read a book with a cover representing the color of the team.
*1 point per book read
*30 points if 50% of team members read a book with the team color
*50 points if all the team members read a book with the team color
◈ An extra 5 points if all the team members participate in the read-a-thon.
◈ Keep us updated on your progress! Every few hours (as long as it doesn't interfere with your reading), post a status update on how the reading is going. You might want to set up a “rally” of who will track which hours.
◈ Mini-Challenges & Games - As done on the previous read-a-thons we'll come out with some fun stuff to shoot the breeze. An extra 5 points can be earned by suggesting a mini-challenge & game
◈ At the end of the Read-a-Thon event post your final results on the thread, as well as the books read during that time.
◈ The winner of the Read-a-Thon will be the team with more points achieved and will receive a 4 book advantage on the team's total
I've checked and only finish date counts for RaT. So if you're reading book now and you'll finish it in that period, you can participate with it in RaT. Just give us it's page count. And to be more accurate, you should use edition you're reading (or maybe one with more pages?! :D)Page count will be determined from your profile stats.
Here is more from rules:
The only way to keep count is to check the number of pages before the start of the Read-a-Thon week and at the end. The difference will be the total of pages read
Participants should avoid tagging any books the 2 hours prior the start of the read-a-thon and the 2 hours after the end of the read-a-thon.
Be realistic. If you are only capable of reading one/two books a week, unless we're talking about Les Miserables or The Game of Thrones, don't set a 1000 pages goal. On the other hand, if you are a speed reader a 500 pages goal seems rather low.
Only pages from books marked as read count.
Lisa Kay wrote: "❀Tea❀, I listened to
last year; I'd love to hear what you have to say, after you finish. ☺"Listen?! It never crossed my mind to check library for that!
*goes to check library*
It will have to wait. There's no way I'll be able to finish it for RaT. :D
I was thinking about what to set for my number of pages. Should I make it low enough I know I can do it, or should I set a more realistic goal compared to what my page counts have been in the past. I have varied from reading about 7000 pgs to over 10000 pgs in a month depending on the books.I think I might go for 300 pgs x 11 days =3300 pages.
This has me readinga 300 pg book per day on average which I think is realistic for me. But I am going to think about this some more before deciding.
❀Tea❀ wrote: "I've checked and only finish date counts for RaT. So if you're reading book now and you'll finish it in that period, you can participate with it in RaT. Just give us it's page count. And to be more..."Where do we sign up for this? Here or in another thread?
I have finished
. It was a surprisingly fun book. Did get slow and bogged down in the middle, but overall a good book. :D
@Ezi & Melissa - I have no idea :D We'll keep it here for now (maybe add another sheet to our spreadsheet TC?) We'll let you know if you need to sign up somewhere else. All you need now is to decide on your page goal :)@LK - I don't 'read' audiobooks so I never remember to check on them. There are 5 people on hold already.
I think we can leaving sign up here for now and I will try work on another sheet for the spreadsheet tonight after work, but probably tomorrow since my day off was switched. It will give me something to keep my mind off not being where I think I should be tomorrow. Change in my work schedule sometimes does not track well for me.
Turtlecollector wrote: "I was thinking about what to set for my number of pages. Since only finish date counts, I'll space them so that I finish them on first/second day of RaT :D And there are all those quick reads... I have no idea what to set it on. I'll check my page count tomorrow and than again next week to see how many pages-per-week there are.
That is my debate as well. Some teams have more members than others, so if each member gets a point for reaching their goal, it seems you would want to make sure you could reach your goal. Assuming every person on every team plays, which most likely will not happen.Next month is good for me, but in June or September when I plan to visit family, I may not have time to compete in a challenge like this as well as my regular reading.
Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron wrote: "Is it better to lowball your page number or should we strive to be as accurate as possible?"If you ask me, second one. We don't get any points for going over your goal, but we get them if you reach your goal.
And LK said: I don't think those who read over should get any extra points, either. Too much strategy there. However, I do think those who accurately predict their page count should get something. LOL! :D link
Maybe there'll be bonus points for that?
Lisa Kay wrote: "❀Tea❀, Project Gutenberg has it for download, FREE, in several formats, here."Already got it from there. :D Thanks.
I'm good friend with Gutenberg. :D
I was checking library for audio. I don't like those Librivox things - especially when each chapter is read by different person.
Dee wrote: "I'm down for this challenge...I'll 200 pages..for the total 11 days."Dee, it has to be whole book, not just part of it. If you're going to read one book with 200 pages, that's OK. If you're going to read 200 pg from that Stephen King you're reading now it won't work.
But if you think you'll finish him in that period, than all 850 pages counts. :D
md wrote: "we have to have a theme?"Yes, for extra points, but you don't have to read it. I don't think we'll be that cruel. We could go with something simple, maybe fantasy book (if that's OK LK?). Or if you guys have other ideas what would you like to read.
Melissa (ladybug) wrote: "I think I can read about 1000 pages in 11 days."
Great Melissa, it's all strategy :D
Dee wrote: "Okay..then ill push it and say 850....gah!!! That's scary.."
Dee, nobody is pushing you :D If you think you'll make it, great. But no need to force it. This is game and we are here to have fun :D
Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron wrote: "I think I will go in for 1500 pages"Great. I haven't decided yet. :D
I didn't put this rule before. Sorry◈ Participation
You can choose to participate and/or changing your goal anytime. However, we have points and prizes involved so to be fair the time limit to joining or change goal is May 8th PST 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM).
No changes allowed passing the time limit.
And Time Interval is edited!
May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM) to May 11th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM) - GMT is changed to BST
Oh, Dee I almost forgot! You have your games today!*waving pom-poms*
Give me a D! Give me an E! Give me an E! Goooo DEE!
Let us know how they went :D
So, using an average determined by the pages I've read so far this year, I should be able to read 3465 pages in 11 days. Since I plan to read a 1000 pg book during that time and those take me longer to read, I am going to round down to make my goal 3400 pages.
There is still time to decide. :DThey just announced it. I've posted it in case there are some questions I haven't think about so we can ask them.
And there is that possibility of changing your goal during RaT. :D
I'm going back to my book now. Maybe I'll be able to finish those 20 pg left before I press refresh again :D
❀Tea❀ wrote: Yes, for extra points, but you don't have to read it. I don't think we'll be that cruel.I was thinking more along the lines of multi-tasking if at all possible (since I'm only likely to be finishing 1 book)
If you all know what you'll read for RaT, you can tell us so we can pick a theme that will cover most of it.It's enough if only one person reads a theme book, or blue cover book, or any other special things. Of course, if you're reading only one or two books it will be hard to fit everything.
And please remember, participating in read-a-thon is not mandatory.
And another update :)Per Sonia, for RaT we can even read books <160 just can't count them for team challenge (can't put them on challenge shelf) - link
I finished
last night and started
According to my averages, I can read 1927 pages in 11 days, so I think I'll just round that to 2000 for the read-a-thon.

READ-A-THON UPDATES:
*Page Goal
Mininum page goal: 600 pages - average of 50 pages a day
*Goal Posting
By team captains on RaT page thread. Tell us the name of participants and their page goal.
*Mini-Challenges
The team Captains must send them by PM to the mod account or to Sonia with the subject: "RaT Mini-Challenge"
*End Date:
Updated to May 12th (Sunday)
Info/Update from captains about Read-a-ThonI am tracking my pages for the next ten days to get an accurate count of what I may be able to read for the Read-a-Thon. It was easy to add everyone else as well since I will be checking during the challenge so, closer to May 1st, I can give you your numbers if you like and you can decide whether to participate or not.
Remember, not all the pages have to be read within the timeframe since only FINISH date matters. If you start a 300 pg book before May 1st but finish after May 1st and before May 11th, you may count all 300 pgs. You can read books less than 160 pgs and these will count for the Read-a-Thon, but do not tag them on the shelf since they will not count towards the total # of books.
Also remember, participating in the Read-a-Thon is not mandatory, please just enjoy your reading and do not pressure yourself into joining in.
For Gemma, Sanz, Dee and md: The minimum page requirement is 300.
For Turtlecollector, Tea, Jojiwoji, Karen, Ezinwanyi and Melissa: The minimum page requirement is 600.
For those who have already posted a goal, it is recorded in the spreadsheet right now, but of course will not start until May 1st and is subject to change until May 8th.
We are also thinking of making the theme:Historical - Read a book that is written, set or has characters from at least 50 years ago.
I was peeking at some shelves and almost every genre of reading has something that will fit here including Dee's "big book" 11/22/63, Sherlock Holmes, historical fiction, classics, time travel, etc.
Anyone else have an objection or other idea? Participants are not required to read a theme book, but the more people that do the more points a team gets, so we were trying to be able to include as many as possible, even those who may only finish one or two books and want to participate.

I'll keep my reading goal at 500 pages for RaT, for now. I love the idea of a historical theme read for that's right up my alley. I'll keep an eye on how many pages I can actually read in the next ten days which should help me set a more realistic target
I'm going to try and find a 300ish page book to read for the RaT and take a break from what I'm reading at the time to finish it (:
