I don't know if you should. I am obsessed with it. Between that and the Game of Thrones, nothing else measured up. So now, I am all depressed and have to keep watching re-runs.

Those shows should carry warning labels: Episodes may cause heart palpitations, anxiety, loss of sleep and possible addiction

I did watch 1st episode of Game of Thrones, but decided to read books first. They are still waiting for me to start. ☺
Last two(?) seasons were filmed in my country (in Dubrovnik). Let's just say everyone started watching it after that.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments finished Shards of Honor (Vorkosigan Saga, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold

My RL friend has been on my case for months to read it. Every time we saw each other (twice a week) she would ask what I'm reading. I started reading it on Monday and that was first day she didn't ask. ☺
My first 'space' book I think. So far those kind of thing was watch-only (Star Trek ☺). It was interesting read.

Stats:
272 pg (per Amazon) - 1pt
cover - pink
no 'enemies'
letters - S, L, M, B

Vi | 1758 comments Ooh, Tea how was it? I'm planning to start that in a couple of days but everybody and their mother (it seems) are raving about that series.

message 1011: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I've never read anything like it so I didn't know what to expect. It was interesting, little confusing at some parts. I liked it and I'll probably continue with series (some time in future).
Do you plan to go chronological or publishing order?
According to my friend it 'really' starts after 4th book (I think it was 4th). First few are like long introduction. ☺

message 1012: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments There really is a long thesis articles about that but I have Cordelia's Honor (Vorkosigan Omnibus, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold which is an omnibus Shards of Honour & Barrayar (Cordelia's story). I understand the series' main character seems to be someone called Miles & I *think* she's supposed to be his mother? Anyway, I plan to read that and work my way along if I like the series.

But, if you go by chronological order, you are supposed to start off with Falling Free which I've heard is a bore. So I'm skipping that. So, in short, I'm going by chronological order with common sense + research.

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Vi wrote: "So, in short, I'm going by chronological order with common sense + research."

Like that one.
I went by publishing order only because I got that book first. :D I've also heard 4th is boring. So, by skipping 1st (boring) and reading this one I'm also on chronological order. :D So next one is 7th... ☺
And yes, Miles is main character and in Shards of Honor we meet his parents.
My friend is very chatty. I actually know what's gong to happen in later books. She told me what's going on trying to get me to read them. I don't mind. ☺

message 1014: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments I was actually about to start with book #4 (Series OCD mostly) but thankfully I did research and decided to skip that. If I become so crazy about the series, then I can always read it. When are you planing to read #7?

I can't stand if people tell me too many details about the series. My friend who knows that taunted me when the last Harry Potter came out and I was waiting for my copy. I had to spend my time with him closing my ears.

message 1015: by CountessPaige (new)

CountessPaige de Quantity | 150 comments Announcement

A decision has been made regarding the use of juvenile/children's/middle grade books for Round II. We have decided that we will accept all non-picture books equal to and greater than 160 pages. Little children's books are still not acceptable (for example: Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss , Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. , and Richard Scarry's Best Rainy Day Book Ever by Richard Scarry ).

As you are reading your book, think about the following: does it seem like there are 250 words per page? How many pages have you read in 15 minutes - is it more than normal? When you tag your book look at the other editions - does that version's page numbers look similar to the others. If you have a question, ask in the Page Numbers, Just About Page Numbers... and we will help you out.

For all electronic books (ebook/Kindle/audio) that do not have an equivalent print copy on goodreads, they will still be verified for a word count. In situations where electronic books vary by 100 pages to print editions, those will also be verified.

The Moderators and Countess Paige will still be conducting random spot checks. We reserve the right of veto power over some books, specifically ‘gift books’, ‘novelty books’, or ‘coffee table books’.

Thank you for your time and understanding!

md | 83 comments So does this mean we can put books 160 pages plus on our shelves? or only if it takes us as long to read one as it does adult fiction/is 40k words? *confused*

joanne (cabeswaters) md wrote: "So does this mean we can put books 160 pages plus on our shelves? or only if it takes us as long to read one as it does adult fiction/is 40k words? *confused*"

As far as I can tell, we can add all books larger then 160 pages unless it is a picture book.

However, if you feel like the book is shorter then other books of the same length, you should look at other editions and see if there is a large difference in numbers.

If you're unsure, it won't hurt to make an enquiry anyway

Hello Hobbits

As you know Mods are taking August off and teams are those that need to come up with some kind of challenge to get bonus books. You also know we were discussing doing Scattegories. In case you weren't checking captains' discussion in other thread this is what we came up with:

We are going to use letters from our team name: C, E, R, U, L, A, N, K, H, O, B, I, T
Categories we are going to look for:
author - author's first, last or nickname has to start with letter we are looking for
title - first word in title needs to start with letter we are looking for (you can ignore a, an, the if you want)
male & female character - first, last or nickname of the character in the book. Preferably main, but you can also use secondary characters. It needs to be someone who's part of the book not just mentioned in it.
location - place where significant part of the story takes place not just place characters visit for short time.
cover - item on the cover (use your imagination ☺)
weather, summer, food, color, animal, hobby, music, clothes, toys - look for words you associate with these categories (not just these words). Again use your imagination. ☺

You pick what letter(s) you are going to play with. You don't have to find all categories. You can 'play' with more than one letter at the same time. There is no restriction for how many items per book you can use. And yes, you can switch items as long as game lasts.
Just keep in mind we need 75 books at the and.
We are trying to make it 'playable' for all Hobbits. That's why there are no restrictions. If you want, we can make some restrictions only for fast readers (to make it more challenging).

I think that's it for now. ☺
Any questions? Suggestions? Changes?

If you're OK with this we'll post it for Mods.
When (not if ☺) we get green light from Mods, we'll create new thread in 'sister' group where you'll be able to keep track of your game.

How can I have 45 points with 23 books? Even if I got 3 points per book, I should at least get 69 point...that doesn't seem right. My point total should be closer to Melissa & TC numbers.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Okay Hobbits, I have a personal challenge for you in July. I would like some help deciding what to read this month. Can you find me a book that fits one of these 4 categories?

1. For a spell out challenge: title or author with U

2. For a spell out challenge: title or author with N

3. For a name challenge: book with a character name that starts with U or Y

4. Book from my TBR shelf

There is a week deadline(by Jul 8th) to post a book for me so I have time to find it. You can choose more than 1 book, but I will only pick one from each person to try to read during the month. Please try to pick ones I might find at a library since I am trying not to buy many books right now.

I have list of 15 books right now I have/need to read in July, so if I end up getting one book from each of you that will put me close to how many books I can read in a month. I guess I can't really guarantee I will read the book if I can't get it in time, but I will make every effort to find all books picked and read them. (Yes, I may buy one if I can't find it in my library system, I just prefer not to.)

Thanks.

Because most of your reads were between 250 & 500 pages which was 1pt books. md has all books with <250 and those were 10pt books.

You have 2 10pt books, 20 1pt books and 1 5pt book (that's 500+ pg)

We were trying to make it so the slower readers could be competitive with the faster readers and it seems to have worked(for the slower readers that participated). md read more than her goal would predict because the rule for children's books allowed her to add a few books that weren't counting before due to word count.
