To complete is challenge you must try and read a book published in every year for the past ten years (2004-2013). You can read as many or as few books as you like. This is an all year challenge. Good luck!

This thread is for discussing and keeping track of your Every Year Challenge. Good luck to everyone who is taking part.

Thanks,
Jack

Sophia | 60 comments Is anyone else having a hard time with 2006? That just seems to be the year that none of my favourite series decided to put a book out. I have Water for Elephants slotted in there at the moment, but it's not really a book I'm super desperate to read compared to some of the others on my to-read list.

Also, my Library is so slow about getting new books in (and new books are expensive) so it could be a while before I can cross off 2013.

message 4: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Is this for books we haven't read yet?
If we use books we already read then I have one for each year already.

message 5: by Sophia (new)

Sophia | 60 comments Any book you've read since Jan 1, 2013, Jon.

message 6: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Thanks Sophia. Looks like I won't join this one then.
Good luck with the challenge.
If you want a book for 2006 I recommend A Dirty Job

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Ignore my last post - I joined :)

I would appreciate recommendations for 2013, 2010, 2009 and 2004.

Liz | 196 comments Here's my list. I don't know how, but for some reason I thought The Book Thief was 2005, but it turns out to be 2006. So I'd appreciate a good recommendation for 2005. :)

Update: I swear I'm going crazy. The Book Thief actually was first published in 2005. Now I don't remember where it was that I saw 2006. Probably just another edition. Anyhow, I'm sticking with 2005.

Did you find one for 2006 yet? I read "Water for Elephants" and have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I really enjoyed the story and characters, etc. But on the other hand, elephants are my favorite animal and it was hard to read sometimes because of how the animals are/were treated.

I'm currently reading Sharp Objects. I'm about halfway done, and still reserving judgement. Here are others I considered filling this slot with: The Last Town on Earth and The Thirteenth Tale. Also, The Book Thief is 2006.

What sort of books are you looking for?

message 11: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments give me 24 hours, I'll find one for you. What Genre?

message 12: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Hi Liz and Katherine. Any books you really liked. Only caveat is that they won't be too sad or "heavy."

message 13: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments David Sedaris has book from 2004 (Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim) and The Help is from 2009. Sorry, my 'read' list is lacking in books I really enjoyed for the years you're looking for. :/ My TBR list has more options, but I as I haven't read them I obviously can't give a solid recommendation. Just suggestions to look in to.

message 14: by Pink (last edited May 18, 2013 09:52AM) (new)

Pink I'm joining in!
Pink's every year challenge

Progress: 7/10 books

2004: Cloud Atlas
2005: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2006: The God Delusion
2007: ???
2008: The White Tiger
2009: Catching Fire
2010: Life And Laughing: My Story
2011: Divergent
2012: The Fault in Our Stars
2013: ???

Some years were easy for me to choose from, but as yet I can't find anything from 2007 or 2013 that I really want to read.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Life And Laughing My Story by Michael McIntyre Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Thanks Liz. For 2004 I think I'll go with Cloud Atlas. *cough* Buddy Read! *cough*
I've had my eye on The Help for a while but never felt up to it. Maybe I'll pick that or The Maze Runner.
For 2010 I'll go for Behemoth.

2013 left!

I read The Maze Runner. I rather liked that one, but by the third book in the trilogy, I was struggling to maintain interest. Also, I'm totally down for a buddy read with Cloud Atlas. I've been keeping an eye open for when the group read nominations open up for May (Jack maybe has the answer?). I'm new to the group, so I'm not really sure about the whole process.

What did you think of The God Delusion? I saw the author on Colbert or Jon Stewart recently (I can't remember which). It was an entertaining conversation but I wasn't sure I wanted to read the book or not.

Awesome, thanks!

message 20: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Maybe we could do a triple (or more) read since Pink also has that book for 2004.

I really liked The God Delusion. If you think there's a chance you might be offended by the content then you might want to skip it. Are you familiar with him? He's considered one of the top atheists in the world, so he's obviously controversial.

message 21: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments Oh I'm sure I won't be offended. I'm somewhere between an atheist and agnostic anyway. I'll put it on my TBR list.

message 22: by Pink (new)

Pink Hi I'd be up for a triple/ quadruple buddy read of The Cloud Atlas, or I may even nominate it for book of the month, as it seems that a few of us want to read it.

I really liked The God Delusion, I agree that depending upon your views it could be controversial, but nothing wrong with that!

By the way Jon, I have a copy of The Selfish Gene to buddy read too, I'll drop by your page and post there in case you don't read this :)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
I just won Cloud Atlas in a contest and can't wait to read it! It's hard to believe this is just a huge coincidence. Lol

message 24: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments Bah! Cloud Atlas didn't win the group read poll. So let's do a mini-group read. Or buddy read. Or something. Jack, I think you mentioned changing how the buddy reads were organized. Right? So how are they different now?

message 25: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments Also, I've upped my goal for this challenge and added to my list. Here's the new list. Don't worry. Cloud Atlas is still there. :)

message 26: by Pink (new)

Pink Liza I'm up for buddy reading cloud atlas, I think there is a thread for buddy reads hidden somewhere in the general groups threads above. I'll have a look... as it got 5 votes I'm sure a few of us will want to join in with this

Are you still looking for a book for 2007? Would you like to try Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen ?

message 31: by Ratz (new)

Ratz | 690 comments Any good books you have read and can recommend for 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004? I already have books in mind for these years but I'm somewhat not contented or satisfied with it yet. I can still use some suggestions. Thank you guys :) Nothing's final yet with my list :)

message 32: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments 2009:
The Maze Runner - I really liked this book, but was less impressed as the series went on (i.e. the second was good, but the third was just ok in my opinion).
The Help - Excellent.

2006:
Water for Elephants
A Thousand Splendid Suns - I can't actually remember much about this book, but I loved The Kite Runner

2005:
The Book Thief - So. Good. I just read this, and then it was elected for the group read (which may or may not be happening?).
The Memory Keeper's Daughter
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Have you read this yet? I would definitely recommend it. I know it's gotten a lot of hype lately (or the last few years?). I was mad that the US decided it needed to make the movie, even though there was already the trilogy of movies made in Sweden. I watched them all on Netflix, after I had read the books, and then the US made a new movie. Ridiculous. Incidentally, the second book is 2006.

2004:
Cloud Atlas - I haven't read this yet, but you could join our mini-group/buddy read!
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim - I love David Sedaris. He has a lot of books, so I'm sure they'd fit for other years, but I can't remember which ones I've read and haven't read.

Half done!
The list on my corner.

message 34: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments OK done with Cloud Atlas

That makes it 27/30.

Years left are 2009, 2010, 2013.

Has anyone read anything good in 2013? I'm still unsure what to pick for that.

Some options:

Reasons I Fell for the Funny Fat Friend
The Rithmatist
Etiquette & Espionage
Iscariot
Sins & Needles
Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories (Confession: stole this one from Liz's corner!)

message 35: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments I totally support stealing in this situation.

Also, Etiquette & Espionage is on TBR list too.

message 36: by Pink (new)

Pink I haven't heard of any of those book so I can't comment on them. I think I have finally found something from 2013 to read myself (the hardest year to pick from in my opinion) Born Weird by Andrew Kaufman, I've read one other book by him (All My Friends are Superheroes) and I loved it.

Still nothing that I like the look of for 2007, I thought that A Thousand Splendid Suns was published that year, but GR says it was first published in 2006 :(

message 37: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments I'm at 29/30!

Anyone else still doing this?

message 39: by Liz (new)

Liz | 196 comments Hey Jon, Congratulations on finishing!! I'm still working on my list. I think I'm at 14/20 at the moment.

message 40: by Jon (new)
