message 51: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) My story started out from me wanting people to know a few things like:
A- most farmers are not big rich corporate enterprises (they're usually family run, like ours).

B- people who dump animals off in the country suck.

Anyway, I piddled away until 20,000 words in an idea came to me that could change it all and make it a real story. But I had to plug away first before any of that occurred to me.

In other words- keep workin' those fiction muscles and you'll get there!

Paul Sybil, wow! The Philosophy of Physics. In English!!!!

Now that's a book I'd buy!

Milinkalap Sometimes I think the plot comes out of characters! Or even if you have a plot, the characters can take you in different places.

Wendy (wendyswore) I know the feeling Sybil. Sometimes you sit down and think- what am I doing with this? But you sit and begin to write and -what do you know- it starts to work well all on its own. Good to have times like that when your faith in your own writing is restored.

Wendy (wendyswore) Yup! THere are several important dreams in my story too. It's fun to weave them into the story and use them for forshadowing and all that.

message 56: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) HI Sybil!! I wondered what had become of you. NIce to see your lovely blue face back online.

*drops off a plate of cookies*

happy writing!

Wendy (wendyswore) MY powers are so absolute I must have made them with my eyes closed -I didn't even know they were oatmeal chocolate chip. Dang I'm good! Incidently those are among my fav's too.

Wendy (wendyswore) What if you use Paul's plot card idea. You take a bunch of cards (3x5 or sticky notes or whatever) and you write anything that comes to mind that is in relation to your story. So for instance some thoughts that came into my mind for FireBug (which has to do with arson on the reservation during the fall season) are:
School
Spirit Assembly
Weightroom
Powwow
maltov cocktail
burned cat
burn stacks
burn truck
drivers ed
Hazing
etc.

Then after you just let your brain spew a while, you can lay your cards out and try to put them in an order that makes any kind of sense.
Then you fill in more details on the cards of what might happen at that point.

Remember that at the most basic level, a plot is just a question of "what if."

What if a firebug is burning things
what if they suspect the wrong person
what if the real Firebug becomes obsessed with the girl and so targets her farm.
What if his obsession turns to anger and he wants to punish her?

and so it goes. I'm still playing with my outline, trying to round out the what ifs and why's

message 59: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Have you played with your what-ifs? Would you consider letting me peek at your characters so I can give you some helpful suggestions? Message me and we can exchange e-mail if you want. Or you can post some of it in your "writing" spot on your profile and then I can see it there.

- only if you want to of course, but I swear I won't bite. (slobber a bit maybe, but definitely not bite)

message 61: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Hey Sybil, if you've returned from your trip, you should step over and meet my buddy renee who just got her own cubi here in the group. SHe's a horror/creepy stuff writer who has published childrens books too. ANyway- Ihope your trip went well.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

message 64: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) And so it came to pass that they did put off plans for her entombment."

Yay Sybil is back! Babe- stay away from Renee's cubi until your colour improves. If she thinks you have one foot in the grave, she'll nudge you over the rest of the way and add you to her collection.

I'm sorry you've been ill, I wish you a speedy recovery.

And CONGRATS on your plot idea!! every time you get a related thought, write it down!

message 65: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) I don't count the words written by hand either, That smacks of too much math for me. bleh

message 66: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Glad you found something that works for you! Way to go on your word count.
