The genres I read include very little high adventure, mystery, or crime, so I can't speak to how this novel would stand up to the best of them. But, with no spoilers whatsoever, I can say it captured my attention and held it -- despite deep frustrations at times with sentence fragments.
I see Karon compared favorably with Graham Greene and John le Carré. While I have never read a le Carré book, I have tried Graham Greene, and it seems to me his facility with the English language is greater than Karon's -- perhaps that is what seemed would require effort and caused me to set it aside at a time when I wanted something more like Karon or Stieg Larsson or Roslund and Hellström ( Three Seconds ).

Imagine the scenes in this chapter taking place in this setting!

The page at this link is a very interesting quick read on Galata and Galata Bridge with lots of references to places included in our story.
