Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Never mind. Genuine mistake. Who's counting?

Quite. I think I felt obliged to mention it because of a recent experience with a creative writing group. Each year it holds a short story competition. Members were informed of the rules, including the maximum word count, but a press release was sent out. Some local papers carried an item and one showed the wrong word limit. None of the committee noticed. The entries were all forwarded to the judge who didn't query that there were stories of two different lengths. He chose the winner and sent his reasons to the secretary who passed the result on to the press. He had chosen one of the longer stories and praised it for its 'superior character development'. When the winning story appeared in the press, with that comment from the judge, there was an enraged reaction from many of those who had written to the shorter limit.
I'm sure that wouldn't have happened in this relaxed environment. I'm sorry I mentioned it!

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments At least there is no actual prize so no one is really losing out anyway...

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments I voted for one that I'd also guessed who the author was: Mr Polari.
Own up TonyQ ...

message 71: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Apologies for that Mago :o(

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I voted for Mr Polari too. But who wrote the winners??
Mine was Mr Procrastinator.

message 73: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I own up to being Mr Author. I voted for Mr Procrastinator, with whom I readily identified.

message 74: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments I wrote one of the ones at the bottom of the pile, Mr Slaphappy

message 75: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Ooh, I'm at the top for a change after a miserable few contests! I wrote Little Miss Paperback dates Mr Kindle. If only I'd voted for my own, I would have won outright! Haha, only joking. All great fun. Well done to my fellow 4 votes entrant and to all the rest.

Steven Shaw | 24 comments I too was Mr Bump down to earth with joint last and Mr Sociopath.
Hope you all realise I'll have to murder someone now!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I voted for Little Miss Paperback dates Mr Kindle. I wrote Mr Pious...... Not last !!!!!!!!!!

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Congratulatons everyone! They were all great!
I voted for Mr Author, well done BJ!

message 81: by Sam (new)

Sam Kates I think I was last (or joint anyway) with Mr Chav. The frustrations of my working week came out in that story.

I voted for Mr Author.

That was good fun to write a story and to read the others.

message 82: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Thanks for the votes Sarah, Sam & Kath (& one other). Yes, it was fun. It's the right length not to take too long to write and it's interesting to see the range of interpretations. Good to see every story getting at least one vote.
Thanks for running it, Jud.

message 83: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I need the winners to provide me with a theme for the next one by next Wednesday

message 84: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Both of us - or would you like to have a casting vote?

message 85: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Well you can either come up with something between the 2 of you together or you can nominate 1 person or you can fight to the death.

Guess we could do 2 themes and let people pick which one they want to write a story about.

Anyone else have any ideas? Fight to the death might cause a bit of a mess and some heavy paperwork for Patti and Simon.

message 86: by Mago (new)

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments Who wrote the other joint-winner?
Maybe we should have a run-off poll (Simon?)

message 87: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments I'm happy for the other winner to claim all the glory of setting the next challenge - as long as I get to keep all of the prize money.

message 88: by Mago (new)

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments Rock, paper, scissors?

message 89: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments If we both submit an idea Simon/Jud can pick one to put forward.

message 90: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments BJ, I have won once before and so already have had a go at setting a topic. I'm perfectly happy to hand the duty over to you.

I don't mind either way. Maybe we could poll the ideas and then poll the entries for the polled topic. Or is that just getting silly?!

message 91: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments OR, we could each pick a random object or two, submit them to Jud and then the story to be written is one combining both our random objects. That way we have both had a say in setting the topic.

message 92: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Hi Jonathan - I didn't know it was you. I was going to suggest 'The fairies at the bottom of my garden' in 200 words. Fancy inserting a random object into my fairies?

message 93: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh, me eyes are watering!

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments Jonathan wrote: "OR, we could each pick a random object or two, submit them to Jud and then the story to be written is one combining both our random objects. That way we have both had a say in setting the topic."

Sod the fairies (Ooh, Matron!)
What a cracking idea but PM Jud with your objects/themes so it's not just the fairies that get a suprise ;-)

message 96: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Sounds good, I look forward to seeing your inserted object Jonathan.

message 97: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Hi BJ! Ok, sounds like a plan. Right, I'll PM Jud as soon as I've decided which object to shove in your fairies.

message 98: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I daren't look. Really. I daren't!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Being on holiday, I wasn't able to follow this contest as I'd have liked to. :(
