Symbols in The Giver

What do you think a major symbol is in The Giver? I feel like one thing would be the Giver's hand because it is what gives Jonas his responsibilities. It also passes down memories of good and bad. It also changes Jonas' perspective on the world.

There are so many symbols in this book. One big one I see is the lack of the ability to see color. It represents all the things that the citizens of Jonas's community can't see. All those things that are really there, but just not known.

Blue Eyes! The givers and receivers only ever had bight blue eyes. I remember reading this book in class.
And the snow-covered hill as the "gateway" to Elsewhere.

RELEASE. i know its not something tangible. but the word release really meant DEATH.

I just want to clarify that it is not BLUE eyes. They live in a world lacking in color. Please note that they have "clear eyes." It is never fully stated that they are blue.

I think the most important symbol is the color red. The fact that Jonas sees red as his capacity to see beyond is a HUGE symbol. The color red is associated with blood, death, love, PASSION. All things that are unknown of removed from the community in order to keep the community a utopia. The fact that Jonas sees red instead of any other color is a symbol foreshadowing the fact that his need for love is what ultimately inspires him to leave the community.

The title of the Giver's profession: Giver. He GIVES Jonas the memories, he GIVES Jonas the information about the past, he GIVES Jonas the information about release, he GIVES Jonas comfort.

Ella Thanks! And Jonas, also! Both of them are Bible names, and actually can be compared to the Bible stories.
