Some inspirational faves: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
“There is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”
“Courage is found in unlikely places.”
Some funny faves:“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”
“Short cuts make long delays.”
“I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
“He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.”
“Yes, I am here. And you are lucky to be here too after all the absurd things you've done since you left home.”
“Oh! That was poetry!" said Pippin. "Do you really mean to start before the break of day?”
"What's beautiful about it?" said Pippin, peering over the edge of his blanket with one eye. "Sam! Get breakfast ready for half-past nine! Have you got the bath-water hot?"
Sam jumped up, looking rather bleary. "No, sir, I haven't, sir!" he said.
“I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to”
Did he say: "Hullo,Pippin! This is a pleasant surprise!"? No, indeed! He said: "Get up, you tom-fool of a Took! Where, in the name of wonder, in all this ruin is Treebeard? I want him. Quick"
Aragorn:“But I am the real Strider, fortunately. I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and if by life or death I can save you, I will.”
Pippin:
“That's what I meant,' said Pippin. 'We hobbits ought to stick together, and we will. I shall go, unless they chain me up. There must be someone with intelligence in the party.”
Oh, Yes! This moment was so moving (: Frodo:
“I will take the Ring", he said, "though I do not know the way.”
Merry,
“But it does not seem that I can trust anyone,' said Frodo.
Sam looked at him unhappily. 'It all depends on what you want,' put in Merry. 'You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin--to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours--closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo.”
Silly Frodo (:
Sam has his own section. Good old Sam:
“It would be the death of you to come with me, Sam," said Frodo, "and I could not have borne that."
"Not as certain as being left behind," said Sam.
"But I am going to Mordor."
"I know that well enough, Mr. Frodo. Of course you are. And I'm coming with you.”
“Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.”
“Still, I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We're in one, of course, but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: "Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring!" And they will say: "Yes, that's one of my favourite stories. Frodo was very brave, wasn't he, dad?" "Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that's saying a lot."
'It's saying a lot too much,' said Frodo, and he laughed, a long clear laugh from his heart. Such a sound had not been heard in those places since Sauron came to Middle-earth. To Sam suddenly it seemed as if all the stones were listening and the tall rocks leaning over them. But Frodo did not heed them; he laughed again. 'Why, Sam,' he said, 'to hear you somehow makes me as merry as if the story was already written. But you've left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the stouthearted. "I want to hear more about Sam, dad. Why didn't they put in more of his talk, dad? That's what I like, it makes me laugh. And Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam, would he, dad?"'
'Now, Mr. Frodo,' said Sam, 'you shouldn't make fun. I was serious.'
'So was I,' said Frodo, 'and so I am.”
“We shouldn't be here at all, if we'd known more about it before we started. But I suppose it's often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, a kind of a sport, as you might say. But that's not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually — their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn't. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they'd have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on — and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same — like old Mr Bilbo. But those aren't always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of a tale we've fallen into?”
“Come, Mr. Frodo!' he cried. 'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.”
And my VERY favourite:
“My dear Frodo!’ exclaimed Gandalf. ‘Hobbits really are amazing creatures, as I have said before. You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you at a pinch.”

That is some of my favorite quotes as well.
Especially the Gandalf one.

I know, right (: I totally agree with Gandalf on that point.
Same here.
His heart is so full of wisdom.
I actually got Gandalf on this quiz, which I thought was cool.

I encourage you all to take it.
It's pretty interesting to see which character you are.

You should make a thread for it, and see what other people get!
Me,
You are Frodo. You're a bit of a wimp...but, if you must do something, you will overcome fears to do it. Even so, you are a caring person who likes to have friends. You don't look or think like you were born for greatness...but you never know!
xD I wouldn't call him a wimp ... but I guess that's one way of saying it. I think I'm a bit like Frodo :) I'm nothing like Gandalf xD

Haha! Awesome. Frodo is a great character to get.
It'd be even more awesome if you were to have gotten Bilbo since he is your favorite character :)

Umm ... I don't understand the slider thingies 3: Do you use them to say how accurate your answer was, or how accurate the question was? :(
Back on track about quotes... ;) I really like Sam's little 'speeches"...he would be the first one to deny that they are speeches, but he does such an amazing job of saying what he wants to say!!! B-)
Star Shining Forever wrote: "Back on track about quotes... ;) I really like Sam's little 'speeches"...he would be the first one to deny that they are speeches, but he does such an amazing job of saying what he wants to say!!! B-)"Haha, I know!
We all need a Sam in our lives to give us speeches when we are feeling down :P
He always finds something positive to say, even through chaos.

Ah, I have another Gandalf quote to add: "Often does hatred hurt itself."
I love that one.
(I know that was random, but I had to share it)

one of my favorites from good ole treebeard:"entish is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to."
I love this one: Pippin: What's that?
Merry: This, my friend, is a pint
Pippin: It comes in pints? I'm getting one!
Lol :P Pippin is so funny and cute
“Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”
Yeah, it has to be my most favourite part of the whole tale. Clearly something you won't see nowadays with the warfare we have. It doesn't come nigh the valour and bravery it would've taken Aragorn's host to push through the despair of the seemingly probable end of the world. As they knew it at leat.
Chris wrote: "“Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we f..."Another great quote
If you'll allow me some liberty..."May it be an evening star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home
Mornie utulie (Darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie (Darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now
May it be the shadow's call
Will fly away
May it be your journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun

"good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among elves and dwarves and another among men." -AragornReally random but I just liked what he was saying... How good and evil never changes and it is the same, no matter who you are.
I know it's not exactly the happiest one but this is one of my favorites from the Siege of Gondor in ROTK:"Then the Black Captain rose in his stirrups and cried aloud in a dreadful voice, speaking in some forgotten tongue words of power to rend both heart and stone."
It's so chillingly ominous. But I think the desperate tone of Return of the King creates the contrast that makes it so beautiful when good prevails.
Kimberly wrote: "Amen. I love the sort of archaic style Tolkien uses..."I love Tolkien's style, but especially the dialog, it is the best!!!
I know right? How about this one:
Sam: Rosie Ctton dancing. she had ribbons in her hair. If ever I was to marry someone, it would have been her... *he begins to cry*....it would have been her!
Frodo: *wraps an arm around him* I'm glad to be here with you, Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things. *turns to Sam, leans his head on his and embraces him.*
Sam: *catches Frodo's arms, holds him close and closes his eyes.*
H.G.: *bursts into tears*
