THANK YOU. Nobody else seems to get that for the majority of the book it was basically about teens doing horrible things. Yes, we just got drunk and prank an old man whose only job is to help educate kids to the point where he is going crazy and THAT IS WHY WE ARE AMAZING AND INFINITE AND INVISIBLE. No, that's not cool, just STAHP.
Honestly I only really got into this book when the after part started. But I loved the ending though.
It was okay beacause of the funny characters and good prose, but could have been much better if the great prose from the first few chapters remained throughout the book and if it had a better plot, rather than just two dimensional characters recycling scenes of drinking, smoking, pranks, sex. Moreover, I wasn't entranced by the titular character, Alaska, who was just some stereotypical, bipolar party girl that just so happened to be bookish. Ask yourself this: would you be entranced by the Jersey shore cast member's "coolness" if they were crazy into books? What I'm saying is that just because someone drinks, smokes, and has promiscuous sex doesn't make them amazing because just about anyone could do that. They're not breathtaking, amazing accomplishments. "But-but-but she contradicts herself! That's so mysterious and cool!"Again, lame, just about anyone could do that. In real life, I tend to avoid people that contradict themselves all the time. So annoying!
I didn't really like the book either, I only really read it because I loved tfios and paper towns. I didn't like many of the characters and it may be because I am quite young but I found the book really inappropriate. Half the time they are just hanging out smoking and drinking, honestly I found it quite boring, I like some of the ideas in it like the great perhaps and the labyrinth and I wish those were expanded more. However I absolutely loved Paper Towns, Will Grayson and tfios and I'm looking forward to reading the other two John green books!
for me it was better the the fault in our stars. It is more real and the characters fit in every way.And it's a great story btw:)
Uhh, I really loved the book. When I started reading it, I remember thinking that it was absolutely boring, and just wanting to finish it, but as the story changed, so did my opinion. I just found all the characters unique, and the books message, unforgetable. I cant agree with you guys :( I just felt soo connected with the characters and just fell in love with them, I guess.
Paula wrote: "I didn't like it either. I found it boring... The characters didn't grow on me and the story was simply ok."My sister thought the same thing, I myself haven't read it yet but my older sister didn't think it was good at all.
Everyone was saying "if you liked tfios then you'll like lfa" but when i read it I was kinda like.... urrrmm okay? I actually really didn't like it but when I introduced it to my friends they all loved it. Soooo i guess it's not for eveyone?
Poorly written. Certainly poorly edited. Do a word search for the word just. I stopped counting a 250. Do a search for thw word well, stopped counting that one at 150. Do another search for adverbs ending in ly. These are all beginning writer mistakes. I've read self published things of better quality.Hack writing, uninteresting story, unrealistic dialogue, he beats the tradgedy over your head till you cant skim the pages fast enough.
I'll pass on anymore Green.
No, You are not alone here :Most of my GR friends have given positive reviews for the book .So I might be the odd one out here .I loved the "The fault in the stars" .Hazel and Gus defined Perfection.
But what I saw in Hazel and Gus were missing in Alaska and Miles.
The characters were extremely immature .Let me start off with Alaska .The only thing I found admirable in her is that she reads books..
Can you consider Alaska as a role model?? I admit that she had a depressing past but she is not alone. There are people who had a depressing past but yet that doesn't make them do bad things
All she did was do pranks, drinking, smoking .
And what can I say about miles.. ?! He doesn't even have a backbone ..I know that is a strong word. But what he always did was whine. Even though he didn't like to smoke or drink, he did it just because his friends did it.. Seriously ?!
And then the pranks, I can't even go there .. If someone dies and in memory of them, does somebody bring a stripper ?.Yeah I know it was supposed to be prank ,but that was not hilarious .
Did miles even love Alaska ?! He was attracted to her just because she was beautiful. I mean that is it !? Is that what love is all about. I am not sure, whether Alaska was ever in love with Jack. She was hopping between Jack and Miles. At times, I couldn't stand Alaska .She did things to be ashamed of and made her friends to do the same thing .So LFA fans like her (view spoiler)
Though I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to ,some of the quotes were like a breath of fresh air :
"if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane".
"At some point we all look up and realize we are lost in a maze.”
“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”
"I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating"

1. The Great Perhaps. The whole idea of this was romantic and amazing, but it fell flat in the story. Pudge's way of going off to seek a Great Perhaps was by going to a different school, getting drink, smoking, promiscuity, and playing pranks in people (I immediately felt a sadness for the poor Eagle). Then in spit of all this, he completely forgets about it. He never actually does anything worth while.
2. The characters. The only character that was nice and original was The Colonel. Takumi was forgotten about, and the only thing Lara did was do the unspeakable with Pudge (all the while Pudge is in love with Alaska. Terrible boyfriend award.). Lastly Alaska, I felt bad for her. I really did. She had an awful life and it showed. And she was a terrible person and she said so. Where The Colonel was original, Alaska was colourful.
3. The story. The story itself seemed pointless (except the last two pages where John actually had something going on). The only thing about the story really was teens are horrible and life sucks, but keep going on because we matter. On the surface it sounds cool, but it really doesn't have depth.
Le rant over.
