I absolutely love Goodreads. It's perfect for book boards, imo. Now if my other boards that weren't book related could find a a good home.

Good idea, Cathy. What do others think of a birthday folder? I want to be mindful of the number of folders. So I'm going to ask for feedback whenever we get a new suggestion.

message 54: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I think a birthday folder would be great. That way it wouldn't clutter up the General folder too much.

To change the topic a little...how do you guys do the quote thing...like...Cathy wrote: etc.

I'm kind of lost.

Susie, click on the "reply" link under the post you want to reply to. It's there on the right.

What I haven't figured out is how to get exactly the text I want to respond to in the quote. No matter what I do I get the first few lines and then it cuts off, I have to cut and past the exact text I want. Highlighting that text before I click reply doesn't help. Anyone?

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Carol:
I think a Birthdays folder is a good idea. Thanks!!!

My tip for replying with the "right" quote. First I highlight what I want to quote and click Ctrl C to copy it, then I click to reply and the abbrieviated test Goodreads chose for me is there already in the middle of the html instructions to italicize (i between < and >, etc.) I keep the beginning and ending of that quote including the "Carol wrote" and paste my replacement quote instead with Ctrl V. Then I type my reply at the beginning of the box. I love the preview and edit functions - a lot. Now if there was only spell check!

here's my tip-
hit reply and it automatically quotes the entire post you are responding too. from there, i just delete what i don't want. for some reason, i can't copy and paste on foxfire..lol

message 58: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4354 comments Everything looks great. I didn't know where to put books bought and before checking around I just put it under misc. Hope that is okay. At least now I finally figured out that it does tell you new posts on the one screen so you don't have to go in each thread each time. It didn't work in the beginning then after going in a few more than once I went off new.

Hi Claudia,
Good to "see ya"! I think it will take me awhile to figure it out, too! :)

annodluvsbks | 103 comments I just wanted to thank Cheryl again for setting this up. And Carol for doing such a great job of organizing the folders. Also to Snap for setting up the Yahoo board so we could all stay in touch and find our way to our new home. Great job guys! I'm really liking Goodreads a lot. Who needs stinking AOL? :)

Sherry, it doesn't automatically quote the entire post.. see above! I got that by replying.
I use Ann's technique, I just wondered if there was some magic to making "reply" work.

I also want to thank Barry for setting up a group in Facebook that a few of us played with for a few months -- it was a great security blanket. I went back there to look at Barry's icon and I think Goodreads has more options for this group to play with.

ok.. i think i see what you mean. it only copies the first part of the post not the response to the post. is that what you mean? lol

Yeah. I think there is a character limit and it cuts off when reached, but it seems to cut off each reply if several are quoted, which is wierd. Anyway, cut and paste is the way to go.

I have not been on the board for a long time, either, Sally and I was also looking for Bill/Come2Raven. I always enjoyed his clever posts and ideas. Hopefully we will see him again.
Also our Nancy from NJ? Is she still with us? I see we have a Nancy, but wasn't sure it is the same Nancy who used to post the end of year favorite books, etc.

message 67: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Ceil: It is a different Nancy here now than NRK18 / Nancy in NJ. You could visit Bill's blog here
http://billthebookguy.blogspot.com/ I miss his contributions to the board too, but he seems quite happy blogging.

Oh, this is ingenious, Ann, though I've already gotten pretty used to just typing in the html code. I had previously gotten used to typing in "whoever said:" when AOL wouldn't allow me any formatting at all and quotes looked exactly like my own words.

OMalleycat | 1448 comments Ceil asked: "Also our Nancy from NJ? Is she still with us? "

Ceil, with the reference to end-of-year lists, I think you're thinking of Nancy HRDCOVERS from PA. She only posts sporadically nowadays although I'm pretty sure I've seen her on Goodreads already.

Cheryl MsTangerine, who founded this board for us, now compiles our year end lists.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments How about NancyJane? I don't remember from what state. Is she here? And (now this is going back aways) Cris from Galveston I think, and Taos?

Nancy Jane is on Goodreads through Facebook, and I am not sure if she spends much time here (yet) ..we'll have to lure her out! I sent her an invitation to join M/T Reading Friends and will follow up with a email. I hope Cris and Taos will find us too. I can only imagine their horror to go back to the boards after an absence and find the boards gone.

Actually, I think she's from Pennsylvania. And, NJ, if you're lurking around here, I have the lovely eggs you painted for me out for Easter display again this year!

Nancy Jane is from Pennsylvania and she responded to the link to this board that I sent out to the birthday listers. She's away from the computer a lot right now, but still enjoys our company and will join us soon.

Now that I know how easy these boards are to learn, perhaps I can sent her a note of encouragement.

And Melodie,I'm jealous of your Easter eggs!
