Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Right now we have one folder in this group, called General. Works for now, but I can imagine once we get going, the list of posts will get really long. Especially since, unlike AOL Message Boards, the posts don’t go away unless someone deletes them, which I imagine we don’t want to do. (You can organize by read and unread, so that helps)

We can create other folders if we want, although we haven’t quite figured out how to do it yet. It has been done on other groups, like the Book Nook group.

Ann and I were talking about creating a folder within this group for Spoiler Talk, so that if any of us wanted to go into spoiler detail we could do without bothering anyone, a la the Books We’ve Read, Spoilers Welcome board on the AOL Message Boards. There’s no way one could accidentally stumble on a post, because in any view the posts would be organized under that title.

I can think of other folders we might want to create, but thought we might want to agree on whether we want to do a lot of this, and what the folder names might be. We could keep General, but add the following for example:

Spoiler Talk (for posts that reveal plot details)
Monthly Reads (for end of the month posts about books read)
Book Talk (for CR, NR, book signing and conference reports, and other book related posts)

That would leave the General folder for everything else, including birthday wishes, going away notices, prayers needed posts, comments about movies, TV shows etc.

In order for this to work, people would actually have to keep to the folders, so maybe we start small (with the Spoiler folder, for example) and see if we want to do more.

Thoughts?

That sounds good to me and starting slow is probably a good idea. Merrilee in AZ

Sherry | 4517 comments i like your idea, carol. it might help to better organize the posts, for those of us anal types who like threaded reading. i have noticed that the older posts don't go away, which is both good and bad!
i think a separate folder for spoilers and monthly reads would be a good place to start. i think it will probably take us all awhile to feel our way around here.

message 4: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1371 comments I like the idea of at least starting with Spoilers. Give all a chance to try it out. I like it here so much better than Yahoo...my computer is so slow there..and I'm not quite sure I've got it right reading messages yet. I see how they don't disappear here, but at least it tells you which has new ones and how many. I think that'll help,

Sally/Aymster54 | 49 comments Good ideas, Carol. I esp. like having a Book Talk area, separate from General. That way, as you said, we can keep b'day wishes, etc. apart.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Great. anyone who's interested should take a look at (find through the search box if you aren't already a member) either the Readers and Reading Group (formerly Favorite fiction I think) or the Book Nook Cafe group. They've got a system of folders that seems to make sense and demonstrates what we might do.

Lord, I am new to this as I DO NOT have a Myspace or Facebook page yet. But I am learning. I agree with the folders and will figure out how to post. I DID add all the books on my kindle to my TBR library here. Huge success for me to figure out how to do it. Carol I am proud of your knowledge on how to maneuver these kinds of boards. Not that I didn't think you could do it, just proud that's all. Took me several minutes to figure out where to go do post...

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Gail, I can't wait to see a folder for New Releases. Woo-hoo!

I'm actuallly liking Goodreads a lot more now that you all are over here. It has a lot of nice features and I've already forgotten about AOL.

YES! I have almost forgotten about AOL myself now. I think adding a few extra folders will be a great help in keeping up with our posts -- THANKS!!

message 13: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Okay, I've added folders for Spoiler Talk, Monthly Reads, and General Goodreads stuff, and figured out how to move posts into the appropriate folders. It would be good if folks would be mindful of posting in the relevant folders.
Ann suggested we start small and I think that makes sense. I would also like to create a folder for all our other book talk -- CR, JF, etc., and will do that as soon as I think of a sexy title. (yeah, right).
Thanks, Cheryl, for giving me moderator access.
If folks have other requests or questions, start a topic in this folder. I'm also getting tired of looking at the question mark, so if anyone has a suggestion for a graphic to put there that will be associated with our board, let me or Cheryl know.

The new folders look great! Do we need one for those new realeases we are all so eager to see from Gail -- and by the way Gail, pasting or typing them in without links of cover images will be fine -- we don't want to make it hard for you to feed our obsession for new book info!! Thanks!
Ann in Nashville JF Whisper to the Blood (wonderful!)

message 16: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments so where are we putting our NR/JF posts? in the general folder?

message 17: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Yes, let's do for now. I'm thinking about a title because I didn't want to ge too specialized. The remaining book-related topics I can think of are:

NR/JF
Book signings and conferences
Reviews and other book related news (book to movies, who would you cast, TV shows based on books, news stories about our favorite authors, reading topics (RIO vs. UOOOR, determination lists, etc.)

Can they all go under one folder? Or maybe two --NR/JF and Book Miscellany. And then one more, the now-titled General, for everything non-book related.

Thoughts?

message 18: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Carol: I think that just a couple more folders will be good. We don't want too many decisions to have to be made on where to post. I do think JF/NR or NR/JF is a great one to have and a misc folder or general one is great too (just like we have now) I didn't read AOL threaded, so I am sure that is a factor in my opinion, but it also helps people know where to post since it is simple and they can start their new threads in the "best" place. LOL, I am starting to get used to threaded here.
off topic question -- Do you think I need to add Ann in Nashville as a signature to my posts? (I hate to have to type it every time, but am willing if it makes sense. I can't figure out how to make it show as my name instead of just Ann
Carol/Bonadie wrote: "Can they all go under one folder? Or maybe two --NR/JF and Book Miscellany. And then one more, the now-titled General, for everything non-book related."

message 19: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments i don't think you have to add ann in nashville - we know who you are ;)
i do think a few more folders would help keep the board organized and make it easier to follow the discussions that you are interested in- and to skip the ones you aren't (although i am sure no one does that..lol)
i would like having one for NR/JF and i kind of like the book misc. idea for signings, book related stuff and whatever.. i think the folders that have been set up already are great!

message 20: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Carol: A book "signing events, etc." type folder sounds good too. I have tried the Goodreads search feature and it works well from what I can see. I asked for a search on Life Sentences and it pulled together a montage of our posts about the book from various folders. Nice!

OMalleycat | 1448 comments Ann said: "I asked for a search on Life Sentences and it pulled together a montage of our posts about the book from various folders. Nice! "

This is good to hear, Ann. I've completely converted to Goodreads now and one of the factors is how well their search features work. When I'm searching for a book and misspell the author's name, they even ask "Did you mean. . .?" I don't think Amazon even does that very well any more.

I'm with you on not wanting too many folders, but then I'm with you on being an unthreaded kind of gal anyway. :-) I'm not going to protest or sulk, especially not with Carol being so good about setting stuff up right away before we develop habits that would have to be broken. But I even question the JF/NR thread going anywhere except in General Discussion as that thread frequently morphs into something else: "I was reading this book at the doctor's office. By the way I broke my leg in three places." "I saw a movie lately that reminded me of this book."

But we've always been tolerant of sideways slipping topics and posters' idiosyncracies, so I think it will all be fine whatever way we choose to set it up.

Thanks, Carol, for all the investigating and all the work.

Jan O'Cat, so relieved Dan isn't here yet to jump right on the "idiosyncracies" and who will also remind you herself that she added "off-topicity" to the glossary for a reason.

message 24: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9484 comments Jan, sorry I jumped the gun on creating a folder for JF/NR (or anything else for that matter) without waiting for more feedback on the idea. I can always change it back if folks want me to, so feel free to share your thoughts and make more suggestions. I'm done adding folders for now until we see if/how these work. You are right that I wanted to set up a few folders before there were too many in general that I'd have to move over, and also before people got too used to posting in general.

Dan, this was created by Cheryl for the AOL M/T exiles, but it is open for anyone to join. I could be wrong but think anyone now posting is from M/T or from another AOL board (Kate).

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments Actually I was busy chasing you in your 3rd life, Ms O'Cat, but an idiosyncratic spatial warp opened and I was able to jump into the present discussion. As to Carol and her not waiting for other opinions, why should anything be different now than before? (Also, I hope this is the General folder so I'm not accused of going off topic - like I care).

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I love the new folders...and the fact that so many of our AOL buddies are here. I was paying $4.99 for AOL (don't ask me why) but I changed it to the free account. The only reason for keeping it now is my email. They were really stupid to take away all those message boards. Hopefully I will get used to this one :) Susie in KS

Thanks for all the hard work Carol and Cheryl. Great idea, Carol. You could actually do a birthday folder as well and the threads could be the individual "happy birthdays."
