Sarah i thought the book was good, but i didn't like the ending. i felt like Cassandra Clare tried too hard to please all of her readers. No matter who she chooses for her to end up with, there are going to be people who aren't going to like it. If you like Will, you would be upset if she ended up with Jem. If you like Jem, you would be upset if she ended up with Will. Now Will fans are sad that Will is dead, and Jem fans could be upset she ended up with Will in the first place. Everyone's sad now. Also, I think it kinda made Tessa look bad. Literally like right after she found out Jem was most likely dead, she got with Will, and after Will died, she went with Jem. It makes her look like she doesn't really care which one she gets. I guess she doesn't because she loves them both, but still! There's two guys who love her, and she doesn't really care as long as she gets one of them is how it kinda came off. Overall though, the book was pretty good, but the ending was dissapointing.

Miranda Kerr-Bloom with the ending i feel like tessa wants them both. whoever is available, she is more than happy to make do with who is alive. makes me hate her a little

Abbigail DEPRESSED. WILL. JUST NO.

Jaimie Tee WHAT DID I FEEL???WHAT DID I FEEL!??!??!?!!? AFTER THAT ENDING,I NO LONGER FEEL. Honestly I thought it was beautiful and tragic, but frankly I no longer feel. It broke me.

Joya It was touching, but at the same time it completely broke my heart. Especially seeing Will die.

message 207: by TL (new) - rated it 5 stars

TL I thought the ending was great, because Jem definitely deserved more than he had gotten earlier. He deserves to be happy and live a life with Tessa. I loved how the series came full-circle and Jem and Tessa were together again on the Blackfriars Bridge. Im also glad that Will got to be with Tessa, although it is sad that she had to watch him die and know that her children and grandchildren would die eventually too, while she lived on. I think the way it ended was fabulous and it wrapped up the series nicely.

Shannon TL wrote: "I thought the ending was great, because Jem definitely deserved more than he had gotten earlier. He deserves to be happy and live a life with Tessa. I loved how the series came full-circle and Jem ..."
I agree! The fact that Jem and Tessa met again on Blackfriars was so ADORABLE. I hope I get the pleasure of visiting London and standing on Blackfriars Bridge someday (: one can only hope haha

I loved the last chapter! I'm conflicted about the epilogue, but it was overall a satisfying ending to a great series...I don't know how to feel about her ending up with Jem though.

■©atherine■ I was PERFECT!!! Because out of the two boys I like Jem more and I'm loving it that Jem finally can be with Tessa. I almost thought she loved Will more and would not be with Jem but....... Cassandra Clare did the trick. haha

Kaitlynn The ending to the book was too perfect. She gets one of the men she loves and Will grows old but she stays the same. Then when he dies, the kids go away and Tessa ends up finding Jem and they get together. I mean it sounds too good to be true. She should have at least grieved for her dead husband but she just started to love Jem again. Then it's too good to be true that Tessa and Jem don't age so they won't have to go through heartbreak. It's kind of ridiculous.

message 212: by Maddie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maddie To me, the Infernal Devices series was probably the most hard love triangle I have ever read even more then twilight. Just because Jem and Will have a relationship too. I was already guessing she would end up with Will but I thought the ending was very bittersweet. Will did end up dying and then Jem finally got to be with her after 60 some years but at least everyone ended up happy in some shape or form even if it took 60 years. :)

Mariana It played with my emotions.

message 215: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex Irving I was conflicted about the epilogue, I loved the ending and was really happy Tessa ended up with Will. Personally I've always been Team Will as much as I also love Jem.

But in saying that, when I first read the epilogue I wasn't sure if I was happy with Tessa going back to Jem. I liked the whole bit about Will's death, as sad as it was, it cleared that all up. I, now, don't think I mind her being with Jem, after all she did love him and Will had been dead at least 70 years, but when he turned up she acted like she had been totally in love with him all those years, Even when she was with Will.

I think that was totally unrealistic and kind of made it out the she never really love Will when I've always felt she loved Will more.

I never like Jem becoming a Silent Brother, I think him dying would have been better because being a Silent brother he couldn't talk or be with Tessa or Will and it kind of defeated the point?

Really I don't think Tessa could love them both equally, I think on some level she must have loved one of them more, and for me , I felt it was Will. I'm happy they both got to be happy with her but it annoyed me she acted like she had been completely in love with Jem the whole time, even when she was with Will.

I totally agree, I've always felt she loved Will more, and in a more romantic way, I feel she did love Jem just not perhaps as romantically or as much.

message 218: by Kenni (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kenni I admit that throughout the whole series i was torn between Will and Jem, thought I probably would have chosen Will in the end if i were writing it. I was SO happy when Will and Tessa ended up together, it was beautiful and I loved it. I was, like many here have said, very upset that she ended up with Jem in the epilogue. I actually went and ranted to my father about how upset i was... being a guy he didn't understand, but anyway.... i guess it was sort of tragic in the end of the book that Tessa could never have Jem, but it was a beautiful sort of tragic. she lost one of the boys that she loved, but really i think she always loved Will more anyway. If she hadn't been engaged to Jem when Will proclaimed his love at the end of number two, the Tessa would never have felt obligated to stay will Jem, she would totally have chosen Will originally. So I guess in the end when Jem and Tessa just fall back together after years of being apart, after Tessa lived a lifetimes worth of love with Will I was really upset. I understand all this talk about 'themes' and how she could love two people at once, but i don't really like it. She shouldn't have put Jem and Tessa falling back in love in the epilogue.

Kiersten THE ENDING WAS AMAZING.
OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS JUST PERFECTION.

message 220: by Krissie (last edited Jul 29, 2013 11:45AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Krissie I understand how some people might consider it a too-happy, everyone-wins, pie-in-the-sky ending, but I felt like the book actually ended on an imperfect note. I think that if the ending was truly perfect for Tessa, she would have stayed mortal, lived her life, and died soon after her husband, friends, and family. Instead, she had to deal with the pain of losing those around her, including her own husband's aging and death as she stayed physically frozen; she now has a chance to be with Jem--who is also mortal. She will love him and he, too, will eventually die. It's all really depressing, honestly, but the point of it is this: Tessa did not get her ideal ending. She made the best of the hand she was dealt and who she was. She has suffered many times, and she will suffer more, even with some years of happiness in between. I think that was part of the message.

We, as readers, expect to find what we consider OUR correct or perfect ending, but it is not our story, it is Tessa's (as the author has said), and Tessa will do, say, and live through things we wouldn't. It broke my heart reading certain parts, but I am happy about the ending, because Tessa's story was told--beautifully--and she is as happy as she can be in that situation. I have tremendous respect for Tessa (yes, yes, even though she's fictional); I think she is strong, and I believe in her choices. She shouldn't be blamed for having found happiness again; she spent 70 years alone! I didn't feel like her choice was shallow; it was on a spiritual level, and that was part of what made it so beautiful. Somehow, Jem and Will would always be one, and if one of them couldn't have her, they would want the other one to. There is nothing wrong with what she did--going after Jem--because that is what Will would have wanted for her.

I don't even know if some of that makes sense, but there's my opinion. :P

This excactly how I feel about the ending of The Infernal Devices trilogy. The best way things could have ended, they did, but yet there was so much sorrow and sadness. I feel like the ending was so beautiful but yet so bitter and sad. Finishing this book, I felt like it explained love in its greatest. I know that some people might think the ending was ideal, but, first and foremost I disagree, but still I respect their opinion, and second, it's fiction! In a world where demons and vampires and warlocks exist, and where people can be immortal and never age, things are gonna be completely different from real life. In real life, Jem would have died because of his dicease, and Tessa and Will would have to go through the pain of their loss, and probably would never end up together because they would feel like they'd betray Jem. And they'd both die, either feeling guilty for being together when Jem had died, and never knew that Tessa was in love with Will too, or they'd be miserable and lonely, because they'd have chosen not to be together because of Jem. And this ending would be far worse than the one that Cassie chose. I, personally, thank her for giving us the best ending possible. I don't care how ideal it is, which I don't think it is at all, I just liked it and it gave me all the emotions.

Jaimie Tee Does anyone else find it kind of ironic that Jem seems to want to date Tessa after Will died and Will didn't want to wait for Jem to die to marry Tessa and stuff? It kind of seems like Jem is doing what Will didn't want to do to Jem.

Nurlely Jaimie wrote: "Does anyone else find it kind of ironic that Jem seems to want to date Tessa after Will died and Will didn't want to wait for Jem to die to marry Tessa and stuff? It kind of seems like Jem is doing ..."

Maybe you forget that Cassandra Clare likes Jem character so much she will not kill him even though Jem was told to have been dying since he was very young. Jem even passed the requirement of being a silent brother, a special one among the special shadowhunters. He can even be stripped from his immortality and living his healthy life after that.

Ironic? Nope. Something else.

Matilda Rose I liked the ending... Thought it could have been a bit longer? A little bit of happiness at the end but it wasn't really that much. The epilogue, though? Hated it. Just make me love them and then tear my heart out... Aww. It was so hard to get over it I was living in my head for three days... And then a month ago I started reading the epilogue again, unbiased, and I bawled my eyes out. So. I do not like the epilogue.

Nurlely Clockwork Princess' Epilogue really messed up the story. It should be ripped from the book.

What started as awesome in Clockwork Angel has sadly ended up with awful ending of Clockwork Princess.

message 234: by ■©atherine■ (last edited Aug 02, 2013 04:20AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

■©atherine■ Personally, I like the epilogue.
I never really thought about the future of a mortal and an immortal cause it's going to be a sad ending where the mortal eventually dies. So I was pretty impressed that Cassie actually wrote it. We knew all along that it's going to end like this, but we never really wanna know.

And about Jem and Tessa, of course I'm happy for Jem. I'm Team Jem after all. But while I was reading CA and CP, I never really felt Tessa's love for Will and Jem were equal. It was more about Will and Tessa than Jem and Tessa. Yes, there was this scene in the bed. But still, all Tessa was thinking was not wanting to break Jem's heart because he's so kind and so weak (physically I mean). But suddenly, in the ending, she loved them equally. I think it would have been better if Cassie wrote more about Tessa's feelings towards Jem in book 1 and 2 cause it wasn't convincing enough that she loved both of them equally. That's what I felt anyway. But I don't really mind this flaw cause Jem also deserves to be happy.

Mary-ellen Catherine wrote: "Personally, I like the epilogue.

I think the epilogue wasn't necessary. For me, the book could have ended much more satisfactorily with Will and Tessa finally getting together. I wonder did she write the ending this way with the other series in mind and Jem and Tessa might play a key role in the next book ...

Yeah, I see your point. May be she wanted both party to be happy or she wanted to write an unpredictable ending. Or Tessa did love them equally (like Cassie explained).

Yes, it could be any or maybe all of the reasons you suggest!

I think if she was setting up Jem and Tessa as a couple for the next Mortal Instruments book, it might have been kinder to let us finish with Will and Tessa together and then explain that Jem is no longer a silent brother in the next book. That would have at least given us some time and space to move on more gently.

Yeah that's true. But honestly what pisses me off is that Tessa didn't even seem like she was in love with jem like she was with Will. And yeah, I agree that ms.clare didn't leave enough space between Tessa's happy ending with Will and her reunion with jem. She kinda killed the book with the epilogue. The ending with Will and Gabriel was just awesome and then BAM, the epilogue comes along and ruins everything

Kylie I loved it! And I could tell that she loved Jem as much as Will! I loved the epilogue, but I was crying during it just because it was the last part of the last book in my favorite series!

Actually, I could be wrong, but I think Cassandra Clare left the story of how Jem got cured open for either a new book series or a conflict in the later Mortal Instruments books (I've only read the first 3, so IDK all that's happened yet). At the end, Tessa asks Jem how he'd gotten cured and he said something like "That's another story of Lightwoods and Herondales and Fairchilds", which leads me to believe and stay hopeful that Cassie will write more on it soon!

Dana At the end of the day it feels like a total cop out. When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one. Honestly I would rather Jem died a tragic figure then basically have to live as a silent brother, and then get Will's leftovers. And for Will, he's dead and life just goes on as if he never existed. I'm feeling so upset about the ending. The first two books are among my all time favorite and this really killed it for me.
