Sasha I did actually like the ending, mainly because Jem got a happy ending too and because the love triangle played out rather well. But, I also think Jem deserved someone else. Not to say that Tessa isn't wonderful, because I adore her to death, but her love for Jem wasn't as apparent to me as her feelings for Will.

1)It's mentioned somewhere that the white star signifies that Will has seen an Angel or touched an Angel. This refers to the night they spent together in the caves. When Tessa's clockwork Angel(Ithuriel) touches Will.
2)Counsul Wayland wanted total control on the London Institute and had thought that by appointing a woman as the Head of Institute, he'd be the actual Head while she'll be the nominal head. As women were supposed to be meek. But that didn't happen. Charlotte constantly defied the Consul's orders. So I guess he held a grudge.

Yes it was imprinted on his shoulder after that night in the cave. Signifying that he was touched by Ithuriel.
I had similar expectations(about Will playing a significant role in destroying Mortmain)..but to tell the truth, I read the book so fast that I don't even remember half the story. :p
And although it's not too much of a spoiler..I would prefer if you didn't know about the scar in TMI. You'd enjoy reading it if you don't know this bit. :)

Juan Okay, what bothered me the most was the fact that Jem was able to leave the Brotherhood. I thought they could no do that or am I wrong? Someone please explain?!? It would have been great for me if Jem just stayed as a Silent Brother and nothing happened between Tessa and him, just the yearly meet at the bridge.

message 155: by Rachel (last edited Apr 30, 2013 12:40PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rachel (APCB Reviews) On March 18th at 11PM I was able to buy the book on my iPad on iBooks. I was so excited that I squealed and shrieked like a two year old for about five minutes. I calmed down and swiped to the prologue. I was so scared to read the book but I NEEDED to know what would happen to my dearest Will and Tessa and Jem. I was afraid of what I might find out... At 11:20 I said "Rachel, get a grip!" Then I dove into the book. I.LOVED.IT. I thought there would be so much bad stuff happening that I would hate it, but it was perfectly balanced. There was death and destruction, but there was also mystery and requited love and happiness and sacrifice that were beautiful to read. Many people didn't like the ending but really, you must admit that was original. No one was expecting that. Cassie Clare showed just how great she is:) Everyone is hypothesizing about whom Tessa will end up with and the answer is both! Win win situation. I understand that people think that that is cheating but Tessa loved both these guys way too much to choose. I never chose a Team because Will and Jem are both amazing and too different to compare side to side. I was pleasantly content with the ending. The writing was great with beautiful imagery. I cried throughout the last 100 pages or so. When Tessa and Will had that love confrontation on the institute's steps I bawled my eyes out but kept reading through the blurriness. When Jem came to cut his ties with Will and Tessa I just wanted to curl up into a ball and imagine that he wasn't leaving them. Then Jessamine:) :( Now she is a ghost at the London Institute, protecting the future generations since she couldn't protect the 1879 people, correcting her wrongs. Then my iPad got soaked when I was reading about Will's death (nearly broke my heart) and then Blackfriars Bridge with Jem and Tessa. Oh geez, this book made me feel so much: the growing bond between Cecily and Gabriel and Gideon and Sophie, the strong parabatai bond between Jem and Will, and the happiness of all the characters in general. I finished the book late one night and just sat there trying to calm down and stop crying. The ending was perfect. I just sat there for a while, contemplating and thinking about their lives. Then I started thinking about there descendants and stared at the family tree for a while. "Hey look there's Jace! And Izzy! Alec! Emma Carstairs...hmm. I think I'm gonna like this girl when I read about her in 2015! I'm so excited for City of Heavenly Fire and Lady Midnight! Well done Cassie Clare, you've turned me into a book addict!

Tatiana All right, I'm one those who loves Jem and just stands with Will. But, am I the only one who hates Tessa? She's kind of stupid sometimes, like when she said the name of Jem to Mrs. Black like "come on, go and kill him" or when she didn't realize that Mortmain was going to lie to her. And yet the book is amazing. I think the end was predictable, but it made cry and laugh, and cry and laugh once again. Perhaps the epilogue wasn't so good as the rest, but to me, as a Shadowhuner addict it was terrific. They were living in such an awful time, but they still found hapiness, which is one of the hardest things at their situation. Maybe the end is not perfect, but at least I can say that it was beautiful made me smile.

Luna That didn't happen in Twilight! I thought about that while I was reading because on my copy I saw on the family tree "who died"cough cough and "who was alive" cough cough. Then Jem became... and Tessa & Will... then Will.. Which I felt like crying. Then Jem came...
I personally I liked it, wasn't expecting much after Will & Tessa...and I thought Tessa would wait longer.. Which is what I love about Cassandra Clare, You never know what going to happen!

NaKayla I find it funny how she got BOTH guys. Lucky girl.

message 159: by Usha (new) - rated it 5 stars

Usha Indeed lucky girl to have find two great love. Well I loved that ending even if I cried when Will died and happy that Tessa and Jem got together after so many years and still feel the same way about each other.

Charity I wasn't happy with how everything just worked out perfectly for Tessa & she ended up getting both of the guys. I would have been much happier if the ending had been more tragic--actually having Jem dying, or her not ending up with either Will or Jem.

One complaint I have is that since the angel blood is supposed to be the most dominant, why isn't Tess mortal? She can have babies, in my mind she should only have one lifetime as well--like all the other Shadowhunters.

Despite the too perfect ending, I was happy to see Tessa end up with Jem. However, I found it extremely depressing knowing that Jem will grow old and die while Tessa will not. Honestly, I think that it is awful, and the ending would have been better if Tessa had been mortal.

message 161: by Alissa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alissa Some of you are saying that Tessa seems to get over Will too fast, but we have to remember that he dies in 1937 and the epilogue takes place in 2008. He has been dead for 71 years and Tessa mourned his death that whole time, no doubt. Jem can free her from her mourning and make her happy for as long as he lives, so of course she welcomes his love.

message 162: by Nurlely (last edited May 15, 2013 09:19PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nurlely For me, the equal love has totally messed up the story.
So.... if it was ever possible, Tessa would marry Will and Jem both? She was thinking about Jem the whole time she was with Will, and claimed that due to 'two-in-one' soul thingy theory. That was awful!

And what does the absurdity of equal love Tessa has for both boys have to do with her move on after Will passed away? That equal love is not convincing. Move on is something else.

Rachel (APCB Reviews) I loved the ending! It was so simple and perfect. You'd think that both Team Will and Team Jem people would be happy and content with the ending, but they aren't! They feel cheated I guess or think that Clare took the easy way out. You must admit that it was ORIGINAL tho. CP2 had such a finite ending. I thought that it was a great ending for The Infernal Devices. Every problem was solved, every couple found bliss, and the evil were vanquished. I admit, I cried throughout the last chapter or two.

message 164: by Marjo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Marjo Sobrecaray Not fond with the ending. I'm a Will-Tessa fan so I wanted things to end with Will and that's it. It would've been nice if Jem's idea of 'Resurrection' was true and Tessa met a Will from the future and stuff. But that's just me. I just can't get over Will. *siiiigggghs*

message 165: by Susan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Susan The end was heartwrenching!!It was always Will and Tessa for me, there was no "team" or "triangle" only sacrifice. And then Will and Tessa could finally admit their real feelings, could have what they had wanted all along! I cried like a baby, but was sobbing by the time I got to Will's passing. Jem could never replace Will. Sure, be released from the Silent Brothers, reunite with Tessa AS FRIENDS, but to be kissing on the bridge, Will forgotten. By the angel! I am still reeling!?!? Just not right. I agree with Marjo.I just can't get over Will. How could Tessa?

message 170: by Robin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Robin (Bridge Four) I liked the ending and thought it was beautiful. I really felt that Tessa loved both boys in drastically different ways. I thought that C.C. wrote of two different kinds of love as different as words and music but both beautiful in their own way as no two loves are the same. Also, Tessa lived her life with Will and didn’t love anyone else for 71 years after his death. She met Jem every year when he was a silent brother and still saw part of the boy she loved in him still and it was so much later time wise that he came to her as Jem again. To me it was so beautiful that she had worn the necklace all that time and the bracelet. Each love was as different as the jewelry she wore that symbolized it. I don’t think there could have been a more perfect or touching ending.

message 171: by Linda (new) - rated it 5 stars

Linda Clare just did not write your traditional YA love story. People envision this perfect romance with Will and Tessa, but realistically someone can fall in love twice. I prefer Tessa with Jem than being lonely forever.

Nurlely Mairead wrote: "And if you one thought of it that way then I think they misinterpreted it. "

I didn't misinterpret Clockwork Princess at all. I have been Cassie's fans since 2010, and was one of her Facebook's friends back then. I read and re-read TMI and TID and collect all the paperback/hardcover version of her books.

Clary was made to be with Jem by the end of the book was explained by Cassie on her tumblr as a natural act of a person, to move on after one love deceased.

That was not the problem raised by people (including me) who criticise CP2 as something so messily executed. The main problem has always been the very unconvincing love Tessa has always had for Jem and Will (one of the other problems). The equal love is a funny theory, for nothing as such can be literally read in CA and CP. In both previous books, Tessa was always about Will, while her love for Jem was described as caring and gentle love, more of a sister to a brother, not a passionate love.

The bed scene between Tessa and Jem should have been a good start, if Cassie was to present an equal love she has for Jem and Will, but Tessa was not happy after that scene, and even blamed herself for 'misleading' Jem into believing something which was not there hence made her accepted his proposal, and was so miserable afterward, until the end of CP.

Everything changed since CP2. Tessa was suddenly all about Jem, that she loved Jem, that she was suddenly aware of her passionate feeling toward Jem. It was Will who was accepted then, because Jem was unavailable. But weirdly, Tessa slept with Will soon (very soon) after her fiance was 'dead'. That should have accomplished something for Tessa has always been ready to sleep with Will ever since CA (the attic scene). But Tessa was still having an equal love for them both? For her not to mourn some moments after her so-loving-Jem's not-even-cold-enough-body? For her to give herself to Will too soon after she knew about the devastating news?

Well.... We read the same books. I love Cassie and I love her books, but I am aware of her flaws.

What she says is not something that we can easily read in her books. I suppose I have to enhance my reading skills for me to be able to read those invisible pages, where I can find Tessa's romantic feeling for Jem as clear as I can literally read about her and Will... ;) "

So true! I've always felt she liked Jem as a friend maybe even a best friend ... but that's just purely platonic. Then all of a sudden Cassie Clare writes that Tessa did have romantic feelings for Jem after all - it's like the author changed her mind just to add more emotional conflict.

Mealias SPOILERS ahead (obviously)

The ending was too "clean-cut" and also, what's the whole point? Tessa gets to experience two great mortal loves in eternity, then what? So it'll just be her and Magnus at the end of the world? Jem's new-found mortality just emphasized that it was a sad sorry life Tessa has and that her future was bleak. Though it solves the love triangle pretty easily. She has one life time with Will another with Jem, then ... ??? What then? Find a new love?

In short i found the ending "Meh."

I agree. It's just so unreasonable! I like the whole book but after reading the epilogue, I felt like I should not just read it.

Nurlely Ruthie wrote: "SPOILERS ahead (obviously) The ending was too "clean-cut" and also, what's the whole point? Tessa gets to experience two great mortal loves in eternity, then what? So it'll just be her and Magnus ..."

True! What will happen if it is only Tessa and Magnus then? They will get together? Magnus is a bi and a super charming creature.....

The Epilogue was the most disappointing part of CP2, although the whole content was also not as good as CA and CP. The idea of Tessa with her new passionate love for Jem was a mess, and rather contradicts the story in previous books. I felt like I missed something in CA and CP, missed the hidden passionate love Tessa has always born for Jem. After re-reading the books, I realised that I missed nothing. CA and CP offer nothing that can be recognised as equal love. I felt like reading a very good story line and ended it with messed up ending.

CP2 told me that Tessa loved Jem more than she loved Will, but slept with Will soon after Jem 'passed away'.
Sadly, in CP2 Will was served as someone who was available when Jem was not, plus obligated to wed Tessa.
And Will was to marry Tessa to continue his heritage, his Herondale name. There is Jace in the future, so offspring is a must for Will Herondale.

"Meh" is indeed the feeling..... ;)

Mary-ellen I always thought it was Will she loved, more than Jem. Jem always seemed more brotherly to me. When things panned out the way they did, I felt a bit cheated. The book could have ended much earlier and I would have been perfectly happy. It felt like the author was cheating a little and having a bet each way and it just wasn't necessary. For me, it could have ended at the proposal ...

I did still enjoy it greatly up to that point ... apart from the accidental discovery of the family tree which revealed all.

message 180: by Susan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Susan I completely agree Mary-ellen. I think what upset me most was how Tessa and Jem were all over each other on the bridge. There wasn't that much passion between them when they were engaged! It was always Will and Tessa with the all-consuming love. Saying goodbye to Will was extremely difficult, to say the least, but it was that much harder with this ending. If Tessa and Jem had just reunited as friends-fine. At least Tessa wasn't alone anymore. But to do so this way? I still feel betrayed.

Mary-ellen Susan wrote: "I completely agree Mary-ellen. I think what upset me most was how Tessa and Jem were all over each other on the bridge. There wasn't that much passion between them when they were engaged! It was al..."

I totally agree Susan, saying goodbye to Will was awful ... and for what so the way would be free and clear for Jem. That scene on the bridge just felt so wrong in so many ways. Perhaps because we were still feeling so sad about Will, but to me it felt like she was kissing her brother ... eww.

She should have left it with Will still alive ... I always thought Jem would make the sacrifice, or die so they could be together.

message 186: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex The ending was way too perfect. It seemed kind of random. I mean, three books where Tessa can't seem to choose and then she gets both? I felt cheated, in a way. I don't know. It seems like getting both was overload. Jem should have stayed a Silent Brother, THAT was perfect. I liked the idea of Will and Tessa, and once Will was gone, just Tessa and Magnus, meeting and occasionally having random adventures.

Alexandra In my opinion the whole series is just plain amazing! The bond that Jem and Will share is just wow. I mean even though Tessa was with Jem (at some point) Will never got jealous. He supported Jem and Tessa. When Jem found out Will and Tessa loved each other he still waited for Tessa after he became a silent brother.

Rachel (APCB Reviews) Thank you! Why is everyone saying it's too perfect? Would you rather have a miserable ending where no one is happy and everyone dies?

I don't really feel like that....I felt that they all had the same amount love for each other. With Jem and Will, it was through the parabatai bond, and with Tessa and each of the boys, it was more like marriage. But it's not a triangle in the classic sense. It's not a pick one, forget the other. It's more complicated. It's something special, something more than what you usually find. You can't compare their love, because it was all the same, and None of them will ever forget any of the others. When Jem finds out that Will loves Tessa as well, he says he would have called of the engagement. But Will says that he wouldn't have been able to accept that because it would make Jem unhappy. None of them can stand the pain they put on the others. "I could not be happy while you were unhappy." (p242) This is why Tessa burns her hand with the poker after Will confesses his love and she has to tell him of her engagement. She does not want Will to carry the burden of his love for her out of respect and love for Jem. And she cannot tell Will that she loves him because that would be even worse for him. And because this is no ordianry triangle, it makes sense that Tessa loves them both equally, but that doesn't make sense when you put it in the context of a normal love triangle. Also, Jem's love for Tessa is equal to his love for Will. Just as Will's love for Tessa equals his love for Jem. There is no picking or choosing in this triangle, well, there is, but as Woolsey says, Tessa has found two loves. Because of who she is, that she is immortal (right?) and since Jem becames mortal again, she can be with him too. She led a happy life with Will, and Jem respects that because he loves Tessa and Will that much. He would sacrifice his own happiness so that Will and Tessa could be happy. THat is what Will was doing the entire time he didn't tell Jem of his love for Tessa. "He would have done anything...to make Tessa love him. He would have done- Almost anything. He would not betray Jem for it. That was one thing he would not do."(p80) Personally, I think it's a bit obvious how much they all love each other, how much they will sacrifice for the other and how far they will go to ensure the others' happiness and life.

Re-read the books. Pay attention to the way they interact with ach other. Watch how they protect each other in their own way. Ex. Will pushes away everyone he loves (habit b/c of the curse) As you go through the books you see that the more he pretends indifference and is mean to the person, the more he loves them. Like the part with Tessa and Will on the roof, where he insults her teribly (something about only being able to be a prostitute?). It's all love and loss. "There is more to living than not dying."(p78)

How was the Epilogue unecessary?????? I loved it! It made me cry. It was so deep and heart-wrenching.

Maybe this helps some:

message 192: by corina (new) - rated it 5 stars

corina Also, Tessa had 80 years b/n Will and Jem, and she never once strayed from either of them. Never had any other romantic entanglements.

""I am glad," he said. "They will be able to take care of each other when I am gone, or at least I can hope for it. He says she does not love him, but - surely she will come to love him in time. Will is easy to love, and he has given her his whole heart. I can see it. I hope she will not break it."
Sophie could not think of a word to say. She did not know what anyone could say in the face of love like this - so much forebearance, so much endurance, so much hope......" (p288)
Read the rest of it. If that isn't an answer, I don't know what is.

message 193: by corina (new) - rated it 5 stars

corina Thanks, and I guess I see your point as well. I think that they were protecting Jem a little too much, and I think they should have been more honest with each other. Jem is not so sickly that he can't understand. In fact, I think he would understand very well. A lot more pain was put on Will, it's true, than any of the other two. But Tessa can't break the engagement. Remember, at first she thought that Wil didn't like her at all, because of the way he treated her so coldly (b/c of the curse). SHe learned about the curse and his love AFTER she already agreed to marry Jem. I would not respect Tessa if she broke the engagement after giving that sort of promise to Jem. Would you break and engagement like that?
I felt sad about how Will sometimes seemed abandoned by Tessa, but Tessa thought she was doing him a favor by not telling him of her love. SHe thought it would just be more of a burden for Will if he knew. SHe thought he would get past it, and hoped he could go on with his life. Yes, the ending was a bit too perfect with Jem getting out of the Brotherhood, but that's how books work :)
I kinda like WIll a bit, just a bit, better, but I would not be able to respect Tessa if she broke Jem's heart, b/c he is too sweet and too kind. I love both WIll and Jem though.
I respect that you don't like the epilogue, but i thought those details wer incredibly sweet and sad.

Thank you for what I hope was a good-natured debate :) I've enjoyed seeing your POV

I really liked Cecily! Cecily and Gabriel! Omg, they made my day! I will never forget the I'll give you a five :) And Gideon, wow, scones! I'm happy Sophie forgave him.

I don't like debates where people get so into their own POVs that they don't even think at all about what the other is saying. That's just prejudice on a smaller scale.

Khamren Gulley I thought the book brought a more surreal feeling to the magic of their world. it also made me cherish the characters more. For and ending it was real and easy to fall in love with which sucks when you have to say goodbye!

I just didn't think it was realistic. It's not believable that everyone gets what they want in the end. And I know it's just a book, but if you don't believe what's happening, then it's not a very good book, in my opinion. I thought it was a really good book, believable, until the end. And miserable endings aren't that bad. Titanic didn't really have a happy ending, did it? Or Romeo and Juliet. Everyone died, that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I did love the books, all three of them. Just not the ending.

starthspink2 Uugh boy do i hate love triangles. But all the books i want to read seem to have it in it. I loved the infernal devices series. But i had a hard time reading it. I am totally in love with will and thats why i HATED the epilogue. I dont buy the i love them both equally thing. You just cant love something or even hate something EQUALLY. There will always be a winner! I pity jem and i want him to experience the love he dreams of but i want tessa to end up with will! Not just because jem wasnt there. And i got the feeling throughout the series that tessa is okay with anyone thats there. Will pushes her away she fell in love with jem. She went to that party with will then they kissed. She goes back to jem and then wheb she thought he died she goes back to will. Then she marries will because she cant with jem. And then will dies and go back to jem-_-. I mean i just dont get it! I always got the feeling that she feels more passion for WILL. but dont you notice the pattern? Its like she goes to will just because jem is unavailable. She doesnt even tell will she loves him not until the ending.

Shannon I feel a lot of different ways about this ending. For one, it was beautiful. It was an attempt to appease all readers of the series, and I respect that. Was the epilogue just a little bit too much "icing on the cake"? Perhaps.
The fact is though....when I read it the first time, the ending made me happy! In the attempt to please many of her readers, I think Cassie Clare has made a valiant effort. It definitely was an interesting way to end the story.
Personally, I myself was more interested in the Will and Jem parabatai relationship throughout the series than either guy's relationship with Tessa...I don't know about you guys but seeing both happy in the end and having good lives was all that mattered to me. So maybe that's why I enjoyed the ending?!
Haha the more I think about the ending the more my feelings change and evolve. Of one thing I'm sure... CP2 was incredibly emotional!
