DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments I had a list with dates of all the books I’d read from the age of 22 until Goodreads, so I added them all at some point. With books I read prior to that, it’s harder but I make an educated guess on the year and leave the specific dates off. CBRs me this would certainly be quicker and easier.

message 1552: by Mel (new)

Mel | 509 comments Bonnie, I like the "by publication date" one too. If you input years far back enough, you can see the slow incline of the progress of time. Yours is interesting!
I kept some journal records before Goodreads which helped, but there are a lot of educated guesses as well. The earliest one I have a firm date for is A Wrinkle in Time, because I read it at my grandmother's house on vacation.

I realize we're getting off topic though. Do we need a thread for stats and data?

message 1553: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6144 comments oops, I misspoke - looks like I used 2007, not 1901, though 1901 would have been best.

and I checked my books an when I imported them from Amazon's listings (you could do this at one time, they came in with no read dates but an Added Date in late 2017. So, those stats are useless to me

I'm in the process of reading two so this should be remedied in the month of February!

As to goals.. 175 seems plausible in 2023 although I do read off the shelf too so probably will be a bit less than that. 200 by end of 2024 is an interesting stretch goal.

message 1556: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3683 comments Welcome Colleen! Make sure you friend the SFFBC mod account, then you can compare shelves, which will tell you if you’ve read any of our past group reads already.

I just did it for myself again and it says 137, but I don’t believe it because the 100 books in common that the page shows me (why can’t I get it to show all of them?!?) include 3 books twice each, so that drops it down to 134 and there might be 1 or 2 more where I have two versions saved (inexplicably).

message 1557: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments The number should be correct, the list shows whatever it feels like showing. If you have shelved a book twice or reread it, it's only counted once. At least that's how mine works, I have shelved several group books multiple times (rereads) and the compare books number is correct.

More about the mod account and how to compare here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 1558: by Anna (last edited Feb 04, 2023 05:43AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Oh and if you shouldn't have duplicates, you can find those in the Tools section when you're looking at your shelf. Or just use this link :)

https://www.goodreads.com/review/dupl...

(GR notoriously marks things read twice for no reason, so everyone who doesn't periodically check for this, or check after adding each book like I do, will most likely have duplicates.)

message 1559: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 1280 comments Wow, thank you, Anna, I did not know about that ability!
I just wiped out some duplicates -- they were all books that I have read one time, but had more than one edition noted.

How do you navigate to Tools?

message 1560: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 1280 comments Oh I found it now:

My Books >
left navigation bar, bottom
Tools section

According to my spreadsheet I just hit 65% - 243 books.
To be at 70% at the end of this year, 31 more.

Comparing books to Mod account reports 239.
I may go through your instructions at some point and hunt down the discrepancies. Probably some edition confusion.
Thanks!!

I thought it was just me goofing up. That makes me feel better.

message 1562: by Bonnie (last edited Mar 06, 2023 03:26PM) (new)

Bonnie | 1280 comments OK I think I have my books read cleaned up for the Mod account comparison. Also, I got rid of half of my duplicates.

SFFBC’s books: 373 (124 not in common)
Books in common: 249 (8.56% of your library and 66.58% of their library)

Two problems were: The Crown Conspiracy vs. Theft of Swords; and I didn't have The Man in the High Castle marked.

I am at 249!!

Thanks for pointing out the Theft of Swords discrepancy. I can add one more to my tally then!

I did this and it is very cool. I have 16 in common with the SFFBC mod account. I think I have 25 that I read in the past but are not in Goodreads because I decided to just put in new books that I read in Goodreads. 25+16 brings me to about 41 so far. That may include the one I am currently reading (Game of Thrones).

message 1567: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 871 comments Not counting the June botms I have 3 left to read:
The Anubis Gates
The Briar King
The Wise Man's Fear. I'm currently reading this and mostly have been putting it off because of the length.

message 1568: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie just counting what I rated, 57. There may be others I read before I joined Goodreads and didn't find to rate, or others I started but didn't finish.

I actually put several on my tbr list and added one from this month's books on my Libby app. I've been reading mysteries awhile and before that historicals, so just jumping back into fantasy again (as fall approaches :)

Following up on this discussion from last summer (July, 2022):

Alright, I have read 199 books from the group shelf and I have purchased a copy of Doctor Who: The Coming of the Terraphiles specifically to be my 200th read. I will commence reading in the next couple days. I will report back.

Not too bad, less than $6, through Abe Books (I bought it with some other books).

message 1584: by Liane (new)

Liane | 137 comments I wish I had remembered to read Dr Who for 200! It was a rough time of the year for me, though. Rats. I hit 209 recently with The City We Became. Trying to stay current with the year and make incremental progress on the back catalog.

message 1585: by Ellen (last edited Sep 18, 2023 12:23PM) (new)

Ellen | 871 comments Finished The Anubis Gates this morning bringing my total of shelf books read to 384. Which is all the books plus one of the Sept botm books. Just starting The Immortality Thief.
I had read 27 of the books before I joined Sci-Fi Fantasy book club in 2016. I have a dnf at 52% of Weaveworld. I wanted to finish it but just couldn't take it anymore .( I counted it as read since I made it over halfway.)
I enjoyed the challenge. I read a lot of books and discovered a lot of authors I probably would not have otherwise. There are some I really loved and there were some real stinkers( in my opinion).
I look forward to future readings and discoveries with the club.

YouKneeK | 1412 comments That’s amazing Ellen, congrats! I can definitely understand abandoning Weaveworld. That book had… issues.

And congrats Hank on hitting 350!

I’m chugging along very slowly here. I haven’t been reading as much the last couple of years. It happens once in a while; I go through phases. I’m currently up to 288 and expect to finish this month’s fantasy pick this week. At least I’m past the break-even point with 26 group books read this year.

I'll do that. Remembered I never ate breakfast this morning.

Thanks everyone. I think Hank and YouKneeK are great at 350 and 288. I wanted to stop many times (like after Doctor Who: The Coming of the Terraphiles) but my obsessive compulsive tendencies kept me going. Now I can read some of the books I put aside.

Thanks and reading Terraphiles is a daunting milestone and worthy of its reputation.
I donated my copy as soon as I finished. No need to take up precious bookshelf space with it.

Alright! I finished Doctor Who: The Coming of the Terraphiles and have officially read 200 shelf books. I definitely feel I have earned this milestone as that book was a slog. I even gave myself permission to DNF, but when I passed the 50% mark I just decided to keep on going. I can't say I would recommend it, unless you are a serious completist or a glutton for punishment. I think I am the latter.
