Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I've noticed (at least on my TBR shelf) that some books stay on there for months together before I actually read it, and some are read within a few days. Has anyone else noticed this?
I think the longest I've had a certain book on my TBR shelf was 6 months. Yeah, that's a pretty long time. I feel guilty just letting some books sit there gathering virtual dust...

ooohhh... I have quite a few that have been bought, and shelved for over a year waiting their turn to be read!

message 3: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I have many that have been on my list since I joined here, that I have made absolutely no effort to even look for! Sad. Very bad.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I used to be very good about buying books and reading them immediately, until I joined Goodreads (and this group) that is. Now, I have a feeling that I'll have books that I probably won't get to this year and I still have a stack that I received last November that I haven't made a dent in. I think it's because most people want to read the new books that they buy, so the older books just have to wait.

I'm actually getting better picking from the newer and older stacks. Right now, I'm reading a book that I bought last month (The Stand) and after that I'll be reading a book that I bought last November.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I read one for the Spring Challenge that had been on my shelf since I'm not sure, but I think I bought it in 2000 before I went back to work for a few years.

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I've had books on my TBR shelf since the day I joined GR, but I'm sort of an impulse reader, I don't read my TBR in queue order.

Fiona, when I'm lonely at work, I'll hop on amazon and go on a super spree.

message 7: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm with Fiona - I have books on my to-read shelf that I've owned for years that I still haven't read. Example: I'm currently reading Memoirs of a Geisha, which I'm pretty sure I purchased in a used book store in Cape Cod in May 2003. (If it wasn't purchased in Cape Cod, I *know* it was purchased on an even earlier vacation, so it could be even older.)

Stef (buch_ratte) | 650 comments I finally managed to read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett in January. I received it for my birthday in 1993.

But it is true some books are read immediately and others have to wait for years before they are read. Usually depends on my reading mood.

Samantha McNulty I am also like Fiona. I have many, many, many books that have been on my bookshelves for months/years that I've been *planning* to read and still haven't.

I think thats more to do with that I'm an impulse reader and will read what books I want to when I want to, rather than in any particular order.

message 10: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I think Roots must be the book I've had on my TBR shelf the longest. It's been there for probably 12-13 years. I started reading it, quit reading for a while, and it's waiting there for me again. I really should pick it up again soon, as Alex Haley's Queen has been one of my favorite books and I'm sure it will be really good.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments My copy of Adam Bede has been on my physical Mt. TBR for over 2 years, and Middlemarch will have been there for five years next Christmas.

I'm afraid of George Eliot, but my mother wants me to read her. So her books sit there on the pile, taunting me.

message 12: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I think the longest a book has been on my TBR shelf was a year, either because I kept putting it off or university readings got in the way xD

message 13: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments About 12-13 years. I even know the book: The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson. I just discovered it on my shelf this year, and I know it's been there since I was in high school. I've been out of high school almost 12 years now. It's actually quite a good book, but I'm glad I only read it this year. I don't think I would have appreciated it in high school.

Suzanne | 157 comments I am so glad that I'm not alone not reading books for YEARS. I have so many books that I bought in 2008 that haven't been read. Since being on GR, I want to the newest books first. And since I'm on bookmooch, I want to read the newest books that just came in the mail.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I have a book on there that I want to read since five years and it is the first book i ever put on a real tbr lsit...

Susanna, Middlemarch is really good, I hope you decide to give it a shot soon!
I think I've had books on my TBR list for 10+ years, because I think occasionally I'd be bought or inherit books as a youngster and just not read them, but I think most of those have been read by now.

message 17: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I never had a TBR list until I joined GR. Before then I would buy a few books, read them, maybe re-read a couple favorites of mine, and then go buy a few more books. So I have books on my TBR from the day I joined GR (May 1, 2008) that I have not read yet.

alicia grant (shesha556) Oh boy I must confess that several books on my book shelf have not been picked up and read for years.I bought a box of books in a library sale 2 years ago and most have not been read yet.I keep goin to the library to get books from series's i have been reading or suggestion and book club books. This year since January i have finally read 6 books that have been on there for a year or two.

message 19: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) It doesn't help that I go to the library to look for a book on my to TBR list and leave with five books that aren't. That hampers my getting to those books. Actually, I've got about 15 books out and sitting next to my bed waiting for me to get to them. I haven't even entered those into goodreads yet, nor half (or more) books that I own...many of which are still waiting to be read.

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments The Tale of Genji was a book that I bought in 1998 or 1999, and didn't actually get the monster of a book read until early 2007. :)

It really is an interesting book, but keeping track of the characters is quite a challenge... and my degree is in Asian Languages and Literature!

Jessica (catchtigers) | 4 comments I've had books on my list since I was 6 or 7 years old and haven't read them yet. For example: War and Peace. When I was in first grade, I had no idea what it was about, but I thought I'd like to read such a long book.

Jessica, that's a great story. Do you still have interest in one day reading it? I have an unread copy also, though I think it's only been on my shelf for about five years. :)

message 23: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (catchtigers) | 4 comments Yes, I'm still planning on reading it! It's my summer project. Maybe we can both read it this summer and finally get it out of our systems :)

message 24: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I have TBRs that I have had since I first joined GR. That makes them over a year old. I have a couple in my bookshelves at home that are over 2-3 years old.

message 25: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments I'd totally be up for reading War and Peace this summer if you guys end up doing it. That's another one of those sitting on my TBR shelf books... :)

By the way, Jenni, I love Doraemon too!

Doraemon is awesome! :)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments I have books that I bought new that I never read. I also have ones I collected because of the author and still haven't read. There are so many that I want to read that sometimes they get neglected in favor of whatever reading binge I'm currently on. It doesn't help that some are in storage, and who knows when I'll get to those!

message 29: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) oh wow! 6 months is nothing compared to 12-13 years. That's more than 3/4 my age!!
I am getting better about reading my books though. I just went on a spree of putting books on hold from the library. No, I'm not a buyer. I think I'd spend thousands if I was...

message 30: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I've got some on there that have been there well over two years. I just can't seem to get to them.
