But so are readers! People have just as many amazing stories as the ones they read, they just don't realise it.

God, whenever I take a day off I feel so guilty that I'm not writing! Damn guilt is going to stay with me forever I think...

Amelia | 4 comments What doesn't reading help you with? Apart from the obvious ;)

I am very grateful to be able to read. It flares my imagination, aspires me to be good at English and also allows me to lose myself in the many lives and paths my favourite characters take. It gives me new views on situations and sometimes I find myself thinking - what would that character do? Or compare it to scenes from a book. The smart words you pick up and those odd facts. It helps me as a person, you relate to a book.

Sónia Tigol | 15 comments I'm addicted to books because I can live with them thousands of different things, I can have a great adventure or live a great love, I can be a heroine or a villain ... in the end I have thousands of lives in just one. But I also read because when I read, I see the story unfold from the book in front of me like a movie on television, but more complete because I can feel, hear, smell, touch.
Do not get me wrong, I love my real life ... but she is so boring without books. That is why I read more and more, after each book I read, there are always 10 more than I liked to read. But in my family I'm not the only one who likes to read, after all I hooked my 6 year old daughter, who does not sleep without me or she read a book, before she went to bed to sleep.

Brittany Perry | 229 comments I enjoy it. I can't imagine heaven without them. My personal hell would be a place where there are no books. My soul would burn eternally without my books. They are like my family. My son also likes to read or more appropriately be read to since he is very young. Biscuit books are his favorite

message 58: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I have been a book addict forever, I cant remember a time when I havent loved to read. I think books were an escape for me when I was younger, when things were tough I would lose myself in a book and any troubles or problems ceased to exist for the duration of whatever book I was reading.... Now im older, I still love to escape from reality and lose myself in books but more as a way to unwind and relax, I love that feeling when a book stays with you once you have finished it.... x

Being a book addict opens a million and one doors-you get a taste of something and it peaks your curiosity to learn more and it absolutely adds to your vocabulary.

Cora Tea Party Princess (corazie) | 36 comments Oh goodness... I know lots and lots of seemingly useless information I've picked up from books. My friends say I'm their own walking QI and always ask me things. Which is pretty great as it means to keep up I'm always reading more and more and taking in more and more. I'm particularly good with the early medieval period of history in England haha.

message 61: by Kirra (new)

Kirra | 12 comments I also know a lot of random information. Mostly it helps to escape to a better place. Reality sucks.

Rebecca Martin | 11 comments I have been reading since I had the ability to do so, an ability that my mom encouraged in me by reading to me and teaching me to read before I even entered kindergarten. I will always be so grateful to her for helping me to foster a love of reading. Reading has definitely helped me in life, in so many ways. I'm an introvert by nature, with a small, close group of friends. Anytime I have to go to an exhausting social function and have to (gasp) engage in small talk with people I don't know, it helps me to think about how different characters that I've read about would handle it. Mainly because my first instinct is to find the nearest secluded corner and stay their for the whole party. It has also given me an extensive vocabulary, and writing skills. I've always done really well in any kind f English or history classes, just not the maths and sciences lol. However, reading still helped with those subjects to. Whenever I would have to complete a difficult math assignment, I would read a few chapters of my latest book half way through the assignment. It would give me a break an give me something to work for. So yes, being a book addict has helped me tremendously in life :)

I love reading and have been an avid reader since I was very young. My counselor also tells me that it is an appropriate relaxer for me and has noticed that it helps me with my anger issues and depression and all sorts of stuff. Having audiobooks has also helped me keep up with the housework and be a not-so-nervous driver, especially on long trips. I just love reading and I hope to pass the love of reading along to my kids. My 9 year old son loves to read also, but my 8 year old daughter just doesn't enjoy it and I'm not sure why.

Swayed by Words | 4 comments I have loved reading ever since I could; it was never something that my parents pushed me into or teachers had to nag me to do, and it's become my way of relaxing if I'm stressed or getting my mind off of something. My vocabulary is more varied and my writing is better than it most likely would have been if I didn't read.

Reading has made me so much more aware of human interaction and of historical context. Plus I get to use interesting vocabulary which is fun.

Melissa Candrasaputra (melzlx) | 2 comments I have been known as the girl who always stays quiet during a conversation but then surprises everyone with a witty comeback. I think I should attribute that to the many authors who have never failed to entertain me with countless witty conversations. I love to keep them in a quote book and this has somehow wired my brain to always churn up witty things to say. Haha :D

Maggie I have been so many places, have had so many adventures and met so many interesting people while reading.

I have loved reading since I was old enough to read. It is adventures, it is fun and laughter, it is a picture of history, it is entering so many other worlds.

And all the fantastic people that we get to meet; to see into their worlds. Every day to anticipate a new book by a favorite author.

Most of my friends don't enjoy reading as much as I do, and one does not read at all (she knows how to read, but can't enjoy any types of books). Another won't read anything but The Bible. That would be like all of us reading ONLY one book over and over again when there are millions out there to choose. (And not to put her down for her faith, but just to say there are many other books as well!!!)

Wade (reader-rabbit) | 6 comments LOL! Since I've been on Goodreads, I think this is the most interesting group discussion I have managed to stumble upon.

My book addiction has actually benefited more people than it has benefited me. My book addiction has broadened my horizons and always manages to keep me thinking. It allows me to create different fictional simulations in my head (that would probably make great books as soon as I get the money to go to a writing class), that create the mood I can be in. Excited, happy, sad, gloomy, or just plain crazy. Because of my addiction to reading, I am actually good at amateur writing and I also have a thing for research (I read basic information on a specific subject and then it becomes easy to learn anything about that subject, when i'm done I can write a whole paper on it).

Other people have benefited from these abilities though. I have done countless research papers to help out my friends, i'm constantly asked to write poetic influential poems about a specific mood, and I am always helping someone with an idea for a story.

A lot of my friends and acquaintances don't appreciate reading as much as I do, so why not go to the person who does? So, i never say no to learning something or helping out with some story idea.

My favorite part of all the books I have read though are the characters I've met (and all book lovers know that these people may be on paper, but they are too real to truly believe they aren't) and the places they have taken me.

The thing i hate the most is the constant reaction about the, "your the first guy I've ever met who loves to read!" It gets annoying.

Yes, I do a lot of research work as well. Although nothing related to poetry. I used to like haiku as it said much in very little space, and of course Shakespeare and Chaucer, although those are really sonnets rather than poetry.

But I get that same thing about how my love of reading is somehow unusual behavior and I should really consider how this is an obsession. I should look for a cure and lighten up on the reading!!!

No one is arguing that just sitting and reading all the time, with no interruptions, could be considered obsessive. But do I complain about their what they love to do; jogging, smoking, cleaning?

That is why this forum is so great. The members understand the enjoyment of reading and don't consider this some kind of weird behavior!!!

message 79: by ALLY (new)

ALLY (allynicjo) | 25 comments It helps me cope in various ways. If I am feeling sad/down/stressed it will really lift my spirits to "get away" and go on a journey through my reading! It is a welcome escape from reality anytime though. Plus I feel like it has made me a more well rounded individual as I have (in a way) lived many lives, seen various viewpoints and experienced the unexperienceable (and yes, I know that is not a REAL word, but it accurately describes my feelings).

:) I love to read!!
