Pat Bevins | 4 comments I'm struggling to think of many for this one. What's the consensus on non-fiction that takes place before 1800 (American Revolution?)

I recently listened to 1776 and really enjoyed it.

Nobody said the books had to be fiction. But I can recommend Scandalmonger by the late William Safire.

Suzanne | 7 comments Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant
The Passion of Artemesia by Susan Vreeland
In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant
Isabella's Libretto (middle reader)
The Red Tent
The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chavalier
books by Philippa Gregory

Francis | 6 comments You could read any of the classic Greek tragedies (Oedipus, Antigone, Medea). Additionally, Nostradamus' prophecies would work too, there are thousands of books written that have translated his prophecies and discussed their meanings.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 200 comments One book I loved comes from Japan. It's like a combination of Harriet the Spy meets courtesan blogger, but from 1002 or so. Highly recommended, and reads quickly despite being around 300 pages.

The Pillow Book
