The contrast between humorous storytelling of the book and severity of some of the events. I liked the characters but humorous , lighthearted telling made me feel like author is mocking of their struggle, pain and desperation.
I don't think there was anything I didn't like about it, although having already seen the movie, it didn't feel like I was reading anything new because they're so similar.
I thought he took the fake background of his writing process too far. It was cute for a while, but there was just too much of it. That fake introduction was too long.

That's exactly how I felt too. Really very funny at first - but 'cheap' at the end. Furthermore, I felt as if this wasn't really a novel but a screenplay. As such I didn't feel the descriptions and setting were adequate.
I thought that perhaps it was better suited to young adults (giant rodent scene) - but then again I think that young adults would miss some of the humour. Overall - wasn't that keen on the book.
