Maybe you could introduce the book using a prologue. Summarize how they first met, perhaps. Or what started everything.

so: prolog, past tense. then switch it the present, write in 3rd.
Me: For instance, I'm writing a story as well. The prologue introduces the story by sort of explaining what the story is about. It doesn't explain much, but it's relevant to the topic.
