Feel free to introduce yourself.

I probably read too many westerns. They sure are addicting!

Kathy Otten | 6 comments I've loved westerns since my dad introduced me to John Wayne. My favorite western authors are Lorraine Heath, Jodi Thomas, Madeline Baker and Johanna Lindsy.

Renee | 1 comments I just joined this group. I'm Renee. I, too, love Westerns! I like finding new writers, and I think Jere D. James is FABULOUS. He gets great reviews also. I just discovered Western romance and read an incredible book by Paula L. Silici. It'll leave you drooling, I promise. I fantasized about the characters for weeks when I'd go to bed at night! Very yummy and spicey. But not overly spicey. It definitely leaves you wishing there was MORE. anyway, I should write a review on it. It's called "A Way in the Wilderness."

☕️Kimberly (Caffeinated Reviewer) (kimbacaffeinate) I just finished Kat Martin's Raines of Wind Canyon series.

Paty Jager | 3 comments I have too many favorite western romance authors to name. But I'd have to say LaVyrle Spencer, Kathy Otten, Lauri Robinson, and Linda Lael Miller at at the top fo my to read list.

Jacquie (jacquierogers) | 4 comments Kimberly, have you read Tin Angel(that's the old version) by Kat and L.J. Martin? I just read it a couple weeks ago and it was wonderful.

Daniel Chamberlain | 5 comments Greetings

Just found this site while attempting to locate reading groups who favor westerns. I'm a new novelist who has a western currently available at Amazon.com. So far the reviews are stellar.

Being a retired criminal investigator and a student of history, I combined the traditional western with a murder mystery/romance.

message 9: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Chamberlain | 5 comments "The Long-Shooters". It was just released in print and of the 14 reviews, 13 are 5 star. It's a darn long book as well, 96,500 words. If you go to Amazon, you can read the first three chapters free.

Laura Beagle | 1 comments Hello,

I am a fairly new convert to the western. But a friend of mine finally wore me down and now I love them! Some of my favorites are Kaki Warner's Blood Rose trilogy, Sandra Brown's Sunset Embrace and Hidden Fires. I have also enjoyed reading Lorraine Heath and Elaine Levine.

But my absolute favorite is by a relatively new author Ellen O'Connell, Sing My Name. It is self published so you won't find it in the library but order it from Amazon (or such). It is worth the price.

Josie Malone (shannonkennedy) | 1 comments Hi folks,
I just found the group. I write mainstream western romances as Josie Malone. I'm looking forward to finding other authors and books to read and of course friends who like the same kind of stories I do.

Cheri Clifton | 1 comments Howdy everyone,

Although I've been on Goodreads for a while, haven't introduced myself in this forum yet. I have one historical western romance published, Trail To Destiny: A Novel, both in paperback and ebook and am now working on Book Two in the Destiny Trilogy. Please check it out at Amazon.com

Happy Trails To You!

Alison Bruce (AlisonBruce) | 6 comments I think I introduced myself a while back, then I got busy promoting my book Under a Texas Star and somehow months passed without me heading back this way. For those of you looking for a pre-Christmas sale, my publisher (imajinbooks.com) is having an eBook sale up to Christmas day. You can find my book and Chasing Clovers by Kat Flannery. Lots of others too, but they're the westerns.

Merry Christmas and Happy Trails - Alison

My dad was a big John Wayne fan - but only his westerns. He also introduced me to Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey. L'Amour is one of my literary heroes.

Just checked out Long Shooters. Definitely will be picking this up. You and I have two things in common, Daniel. For different reasons, I also combined mystery and romance in a western (Under a Texas Star). In my case it was the inspiration of Louis L'Amour's Chic Bowdrie tales coupled with a mother with an impressive collection of mystery books. Being a research junkie also helped.

The second thing is we both have sisters who missed seeing us published. Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of my little sister's death. Guess I'm feeling more than usually sentimental as a result.

I look forward to reading your book. The Long Shooters looks like a good read.

Daniel Chamberlain | 5 comments Alison,

Neat about you buying the book. Thanks. My condolences. It doesn't matter when you lose a family member. That time of year always rolls around to remind you of the empty spot.

Regards

Dan

I love both Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey. Read almost all of the books by both authors. Loved the Sacketts of course, and Flint, and Bendigo Shafer.

Daniel Chamberlain | 5 comments I think you'd like "The Long-Shooters." Many of the people who've read it say it's as good as anything L'Amour ever wrote. I'm not bragging. The effort that went into this one shows. Plus, it's nearly 100,000 words!

Elisabeth | 5 comments Hi everyone - I've been on Goodreads for a few months, but I'm new to the group. I grew up watching Western movies with my dad, but in the past five or six years I discovered Western literature and I've been reading (and writing) it ever since. My tastes tend toward older books, and some of my favorites are by lesser-known or obscure authors, though I've enjoyed some by L'Amour, Grey, Elmore Leonard and so on. My favorite Western author is B.M. Bower, and I also love O. Henry's Western stories (he's one of my all-around favorites in any genre, too). My first own first book is a collection of Western short stories, The Ranch Next Door and Other Stories—it's available as an ebook right now and is due to be out in paperback soon!

Peggy Henderson (peggyhenderson) | 1 comments So nice to connect with other western lovers. When I was little, my friend and I didn't play with barbie dolls. We played with our little cowboy and indian plastic figures. Such great memories.
Until a few months ago, I thought "western" books only meant cowboys and indians. I love the old Rocky Mountain mountain man era that was so short-lived in our history, and that's what the first two books in my current series is about.

message 22: by Shirl (new)

Shirl | 4 comments I like to read on Western/Frontier. The wagon trains west and the discovery of the old west and the mountain men that lived and survived in the wilderness.

message 23: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie (jacquierogers) | 4 comments I checked this out on Peggy's recommendation and saw I'm already a member. :) But I haven't been to Goodreads much--just not a lot of time. I really love the groups here, though.

Where I grew up, there were two genres: Western, and Everything Else. Naturally, once I hit the teen years, I preferred Everything Else. But the gnat always is attracted to the light and eventually I came back. :)

The western life and attitude lures me more than movies or authors, although of course I have my favorites. What really interests me is the daily life--their chores, their parties, their food, and yes, their relationships.

I just read Letters of a Woman Homesteader. What resolve--I love strong characters. And even thought it takes place in the early 1900s, it could just as well have taken place 40 years earlier--no cars, no telephones, no electricity. I recommend this book to any western author.

Another book along those lines is Gambler's Wife: The Life of Malinda Jenkins. She started with no education and a handsome, no-good husband. Finally got wise to him, divorced him, ended up moving all over the western US starting various businesses in every place she stayed.

Right now, I'm reading a historical mystery set in Leadville, Colorado: Silver Lies and I'm enjoying it very much.

I got this book "Free" today on my Kindle at Amazon. It sounds like a book I will enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation Jacquie.

Debra Parmley (debraparmley) Hello

Guess I'd better pull my nose out of my current work in progress and get around to introducing myself here. :-)

I'm a romance novelist with two western historical romances out. A Desperate Journey and Dangerous Ties

My hubby is the one who introduced me to John Wayne's movies and to everything Texas. His fathers side of the family are all Texans and they had horses and cattle when he was growing up.

So I suppose you might say I'm partial to a Texas man. ;-)

message 26: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 1 comments Hi I'm Andy and I freaking love westerns. Iv mostly been a weird west kinda guy but iv really started to enjoy a good old fashion western without demons or zombies ( although I still love those!) I'm really picky I don't mind a love story but what I'm really looking for is a good ol gunfighter book so if you can point me in the right direction for that by all means speak up!!!

Richard Roux | 1 comments Hello...my name's Richard Roux and I love Westerns, too! Movies, television shows, books, and stories. I'm a historian, as well as an author of a new Western series centered around the California Gold Rush.

I hope to interact with others on this topic.

B.L. Blankenship | 1 comments B. L. Blankenship's - "God Walks The Dark Hills: Book I & II" is a brand-new Civil War era Western Horror dual novel that deals with both the supernatural and natural. It has a lot of explicit content.

Rosanne Bittner (rosannebittner) | 2 comments Just found this comment area. I must not be searching properly because everything here is really old. Anyway, re: westerns - I've written 75 books over the last 40 years for various publishers and now for Amazon, and the greatest share of them are Old West/Native American romance based on real American history, real locations, etc. I've been called the Queen of Western Romance and an emotional powerhouse. If you love westerns, try my Outlaw Hearts series - a family saga - (Outlaw Hearts, Do Not Forsake me, Love's Sweet Revenge, The Last Outlaw and Blaze of Glory. Or my High Lonesome trilogy - Ride the High Lonesome, Lawman in the High Lonesome, Journey to High Lonesome. Native American novels - Song of the Wolf, Mystic Dreamers, Mystic Visions, Mystic Warriors (a trilogy), Capture my Heart, A Warrior's Promise, or my Savage Destiny Series, another family saga, which after 40 years is still selling - Sweet Prairie Passion, Ride the Free Wind, River of Love, Embrace the Wild Land, Climb the Highest Mountain, Meet the New Dawn and Eagle's Song. Many, many more to choose from. Many of the books won awards and I am a USA TODAY best-seller. www.rosannebittner.com. Enjoy!

Cheri Clifton | 1 comments Hi Rosanne,
Great to "see" the Queen of Western Romance again! I say again because I have read most of your books over the decades and saw you at many of the RWA conferences.
You were an inspiration for me to become a western romance author. If and when you get a chance, I would be honored for you to check out my Destiny Series!
Looking forward to reading your book, Dancing Beneath You.
Take care and hope to hear back from you,
Cheri Kay Clifton
