Just found this site while attempting to locate reading groups who favor westerns. I'm a new novelist who has a western currently available at Amazon.com. So far the reviews are stellar.
Being a retired criminal investigator and a student of history, I combined the traditional western with a murder mystery/romance.

I am a fairly new convert to the western. But a friend of mine finally wore me down and now I love them! Some of my favorites are Kaki Warner's Blood Rose trilogy, Sandra Brown's Sunset Embrace and Hidden Fires. I have also enjoyed reading Lorraine Heath and Elaine Levine.
But my absolute favorite is by a relatively new author Ellen O'Connell, Sing My Name. It is self published so you won't find it in the library but order it from Amazon (or such). It is worth the price.

I just found the group. I write mainstream western romances as Josie Malone. I'm looking forward to finding other authors and books to read and of course friends who like the same kind of stories I do.

Although I've been on Goodreads for a while, haven't introduced myself in this forum yet. I have one historical western romance published, Trail To Destiny: A Novel, both in paperback and ebook and am now working on Book Two in the Destiny Trilogy. Please check it out at Amazon.com

My dad was a big John Wayne fan - but only his westerns. He also introduced me to Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey. L'Amour is one of my literary heroes.

Just checked out Long Shooters. Definitely will be picking this up. You and I have two things in common, Daniel. For different reasons, I also combined mystery and romance in a western (Under a Texas Star). In my case it was the inspiration of Louis L'Amour's Chic Bowdrie tales coupled with a mother with an impressive collection of mystery books. Being a research junkie also helped.
The second thing is we both have sisters who missed seeing us published. Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of my little sister's death. Guess I'm feeling more than usually sentimental as a result.
I look forward to reading your book. The Long Shooters looks like a good read.

Neat about you buying the book. Thanks. My condolences. It doesn't matter when you lose a family member. That time of year always rolls around to remind you of the empty spot.

Dan

I love both Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey. Read almost all of the books by both authors. Loved the Sacketts of course, and Flint, and Bendigo Shafer.

Until a few months ago, I thought "western" books only meant cowboys and indians. I love the old Rocky Mountain mountain man era that was so short-lived in our history, and that's what the first two books in my current series is about.

Where I grew up, there were two genres: Western, and Everything Else. Naturally, once I hit the teen years, I preferred Everything Else. But the gnat always is attracted to the light and eventually I came back. :)
The western life and attitude lures me more than movies or authors, although of course I have my favorites. What really interests me is the daily life--their chores, their parties, their food, and yes, their relationships.
I just read Letters of a Woman Homesteader. What resolve--I love strong characters. And even thought it takes place in the early 1900s, it could just as well have taken place 40 years earlier--no cars, no telephones, no electricity. I recommend this book to any western author.
Another book along those lines is Gambler's Wife: The Life of Malinda Jenkins. She started with no education and a handsome, no-good husband. Finally got wise to him, divorced him, ended up moving all over the western US starting various businesses in every place she stayed.
Right now, I'm reading a historical mystery set in Leadville, Colorado: Silver Lies and I'm enjoying it very much.

I got this book "Free" today on my Kindle at Amazon. It sounds like a book I will enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation Jacquie.

Guess I'd better pull my nose out of my current work in progress and get around to introducing myself here. :-)
I'm a romance novelist with two western historical romances out. A Desperate Journey and Dangerous Ties
My hubby is the one who introduced me to John Wayne's movies and to everything Texas. His fathers side of the family are all Texans and they had horses and cattle when he was growing up.
So I suppose you might say I'm partial to a Texas man. ;-)

I hope to interact with others on this topic.

Great to "see" the Queen of Western Romance again! I say again because I have read most of your books over the decades and saw you at many of the RWA conferences.
You were an inspiration for me to become a western romance author. If and when you get a chance, I would be honored for you to check out my Destiny Series!
Looking forward to reading your book, Dancing Beneath You.
Take care and hope to hear back from you,

I probably read too many westerns. They sure are addicting!
