I really liked the first book, but the second and third books I didn't really like. There was so much potential for sequels after the first book, but the second and third books let that potential go to waste

Candice (cer2016) I loved this triology! It was different from what I normally read so I was surprised I loved it so much. The first two books were so great but by the third book I was emotionally exhausted. I didn't dislike the third book, I just didn't want it to end, so it was my least favorite.

Nope, you're not! I was disappointed with the ending of the third book and actually found myself saying "This is it?!" I really wanted Katniss to explore her feelings for Gale due to the fact that they were soo present, but instead she goes with Peeta, who isn't that bad, but I still would have wanted to see what would have happened if Katniss went with Gale.

I enjoyed Mockingjay and also it's ending. The honest and realistic portrayal is what I liked most. I mean, enough with the censoring and sugarcoating and let's get real. Mockingjay was nothing like what was expected with details of explanation and rebellion. It was more from Katnis's point of view. She probably didn't want to think much about the rebellion and didn't care who the president was or how her trial went and therefore these things are less discussed in the ending. But there is the window of imagination for every reader and the not knowing gives you the power to imagine.

I don't know if I sound childish or not, but one of my favorite author has the tendency of doing such thing as ending a book like this (e.g. the case of Mockingjay), so I suppose I don't hate it as I am used to this kind of ending.

I like to think that if her and Gale ended up together she wouldn't have been as tortured with her life. I was also shocked that when the remaining Tributes were asked to vote on the Hunger Games for the Capitol's children that she voted yes. I honestly thought it would be a terrible idea and would cause problems but I guess not, because of the epilogue.

I agree 100%. I wanted to like the second two books, I really did. But they just felt forced. I forced myself to finish Mockingjay but I never felt a connection to the book. Gale was just sort of brushed aside unconvincingly, no resolution there at all. I wasn't even sad when Prim died.

I'm sorry to say, this might be one of those rare cases when the movie is actually better than the book.

message 62: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (turwaithielgreenleaf) | 6 comments i don't know if i should be ashamed to say it or not, but i actually liked mockingjay more than catching fire. i quess it's because i'm more of a symbolism lover, and i liked the fact that there was a lot of deeper meaning in the final book. this doesn't mean i don't like the hunger games and catching fire, in fact i am far from it, but i just felt that mockingjay had a deeper message to it's readers. the way she kind of brushed off gale got me a bit annoyed, but i understand that he wasn't really that big a part in katniss' life now, and seeing as it's written in 1st person, i can see why she left out gale for patches of the book. i also like the fact that -spoilers- she killed coin instead of snow, because that also showed her worst trait. the inability to follow commands. i guess i just really like the way katniss developed from a strong-willed girl who hunted for her family, to a stronger-willed young woman who was an idol of many people. and one of the main things that i liked about it was that she never really acted too unbelievably. she was always realistic, which was one of the reasons why i enjoyed her as a character. one more bad thing that i might add about mockingjay was the absence of effie. from the beginning, i always liked effie for her ability to give others courage and be supportive even when there's no hope left to give. i always felt that she was underrated in the series, because she is portrayed as a talkative capitol woman that wants to get bumped up to a higher district, but you kind of delve deeper into her mind in catching fire. one of the funniest things in the book (in my opinion) is her relationship with haymitch. the way that they always trod on each others tail's really made me fall in love with the characters in the books. anyway, that's my rant over c:

I really love this series, it's one of my all-time favourites, I think.
I'm currently reading it for the second time but for the first time in English (I've only read the German translation so far) and I love it even more.
It always makes me want to be Katniss...and it always makes me hungry because she is always describing her food in so much detail...I know I'm weird, haha.

message 67: by Mais (new)

Mais (maisdavid) | 16 comments but tbqh I hated the ending. for a book so packed with events and action you'd expect .. well IDK exactly .. a less calm ending? I wish their was something abrupt. a switch. a seeing-the-light moment. but there wasn't. there was misery at the end and I hated it

message 68: by Ash (new)

Ash Bruce (ashb031922) My 9 year old son read this after I did and he enjoyed it enough to want to continue the series. I enjoyed the whole series completely. I think I saw the movie ( I just don't remember as books tend to come alive for me very vividly) but don't know that it would be appropriate for my 9 year old. Seems it would be (or was) a very bloody movie.

message 74: by Joanne Farley (new)

Joanne Farley I have to agree with those that thought the movie was as good as the book. I thought they did a great job

Kristine Isabelle (shekissedthesky) I agree with Ida that Katniss was not the perfect example of a brave heroine especially in the third book. I think she lost her essence in the last book. She was fine in the first two books. And I think the ending was not satisfying enough and that nothing really happened except a lot of people died. I was disappointed. But still a good series.

message 76: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I really have to agree with the people complaining about the ending. I really did not like it either. Not that I want a happy ending in every book I read; on the contrary, it feels refreshing to have a non-hollywood style ending for a change, but it nevertheless felt extremely lacking. And the epilogue just made me cringe and want to throw the book out the window. Bad enough that one of the most epic characters had a completely unnoticeable death (hello?! I had to read that passage again to realise what had actually happened!) but the story in and of it self was not really as good as the series had started off.

I devoured the three of them because they were quick reads but I forced myself to actually finish Mockingjay. Every single book had a horrible ending - in my opinion - as in, they were somewhat lacking and it felt like the ending paragraphs were simply added just to make the reader aware of the fact that the book was over.

Gale being written out was a bit of a disappointment too, though I agree that it could be explained quite simply by the fact that he wasn't an all too important part of her life anymore.

After all the bashing I've done so far, I do have to say though that I loved the idea of a world with Hunger Games, a world that is by no means perfect and gives a lot to think about in terms of symbolism, parallels and possible views on a (dystopian?) future.

As far as the movie is concerned, some scenes (cave for instance) would have benefited from more depth and they should have left out the scene from Catching Fire they put in for the Rue-scene. For some reason that really bothered me a lot. For the rest, the movie was well done, and I liked Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. Stanley Tucci was quite fitting as well. Not sure yet if I'm going to go see Catching Fire or not, but I think I'm too intrigued about how they're going to portray the games, not to go see it ;-)

Oh my... I just wrote a novel, didn't I? :-/

message 78: by Erin (last edited Apr 23, 2013 06:32AM) (new)

Erin I hated the ending of Mockingjay, but apparently for different reasons than everyone else. I loved that at one point Katniss realizes that her life is one giant manipulation. The Capital manipulates her relationship with Peeta. The Resistance manipulates her relationship with Gale. And the best thing about it all was that Katniss recognizes both of those facts. So when the end of Mockingjay came around, I wanted Katniss to choose to be alone. She's too damaged for anyone but a champion, but I wanted her to finally be the one to take charge of her life. Choosing to remain alone would have been a choice that only she could have made for herself. By ending up with Peeta, she just lived out an extension of the Captial's manipulations. But that's just my take on it.

message 79: by Iris (last edited Apr 25, 2013 07:13AM) (new)

Iris | 27 comments These books had a lot of potential for me, but I have to say that the the series became too dark for my liking. I get that it's about war, and there's nothing good or glorious about it. In all honesty? I already knew all of that.

I don't read books to remind myself that the world is a dark place, I read books to forget it. I think S. Collins lost me in all the despair somewhere in the middle of the second book. From that point on, I only kept reading because I (sort of) wanted to know what happens at the end.

That being said, I'll probably see all the movies anyway, because Jennifer Lawrence is HOT!! (And I say this in a completely non-perverted straight woman who appreciates Jennifer's hotness way).

I completely agree with you. The first two books were absolutely brilliant and I couldnt put them down. The third book just didnt follow how the story seemed to be. I dont mean I want a happy ending because that is unrealistic and doesnt bother me but it seemed to me like the characters just went against everything in the first two books. Very rushed.

Iveta (knihomolik) | 5 comments I´ve just started reading the first book of the trilogy. And my feelings are both excitement and a bit of disappointment. I honestly thought the book will be better than the movie. I watched the movie, I did not realy enjoyed it, but I was curious about the first book and the thoughts in it. But after almost two hundred pages, I dont´t realy see any deeper thoughts than that presented in the movie.
And I find it kind of disappointing. But I will read all of the books, so I can make a proper opinion on the series.

Selma | 28 comments I have read all the books in the Hunger Games trilogy, and I can honestly say that they're some of the best books I've ever read. I think the story is outstanding and unique, and I love the way Suzanne Collins depicts the places and the characters in the book. My favorite book in the trilogy was the third, Mockingjay. Love the way it puts an end to the story (in my opinion).

Sparklable Jewellery | 3 comments Loved the books but I felt that they changed things in the films which weren't necessary...like the way Katniss came across the mockingjay brooch

message 91: by Meagan (new)

Meagan | 65 comments I really loved the books but I wasn't amazed by the movie. Sure it was ok but it didn't give me the same feeling about Katniss. In the movie she comes off as arrogant and unapproachable. It also seemed like her interactions with Peeta were forced instead of her slowly falling for him before playing it off like she didn't at the end like in the book.

message 92: by Christian (new)

Christian Maria Morgan Cheers for Ms. Collins!

message 93: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments I loved the series as it is set in the area where I live. Here in the mines of West Virginia people are tough, and I love that she instilled that in Katniss. I mean its not so different from what she puts in Katniss's personality. Most people gather and hunt their own food. Her book is really authentic in her character development and regional differences. I mean we are still cut off here and if you would here us speak you would understand. I loved the movie as well because the metal lunch buckets are what miners really use to carry their food.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

Going to see "Mockingjay Part 1" tonight. Hopefully the movie is more engrossing than the book! I loved "The Hunger Games" and "Catching Fire," but found "Mockingjay" a little dry and too political for my taste.
