Virginia Arthur No one can figure out the genre of my books. They have been placed in many different categories including YA. I have been told literary fiction in America is dead as well. I grew up and lived in a different time, and literally (literally) moribund or not, I will continue to write literary "genre" fiction. Recently I was in a bar, surrounded by young people, and I asked them if they had ever heard of Catcher in the Rye. None of them really had and two of them yelled out "Lenny"--getting this classic confused with another classic (do you know what it is?). They had never heard of Hesse, Kesey, Vonnegut, Ginsberg...this terrifies me. What are we losing when the youth of today, who could possibly find comfort in J.D. Salinger, have no idea who he is? What are they teaching in the high schools? What does it mean when one of these kids yelled out, with apparent pride, "I got through high school without reading a single book!" So ignore them if you will. I suppose I am on some silly quest, in denial...back to the vampires you go but if you want something "different" (now): Birdbrain and Phat's Chance for Buddha in Houston by Virginia Arthur. Thank you.

P. Gordon | 6 comments Hello everyone,

I would like to draw attention to a trilogy - the "Ergo Sum" trilogy - of which book 3 will complete the series in a few weeks. The first two, "Dubito" and "Credo" were already published earlier this year.

The trilogy explores humanity's eventual arrival at a climate crisis, and follows families into space in search of hope, answers, belief in the future. A mix of comedy, self-doubt, science, tragedy, the books discuss hope, trust, belief and understanding in an interstellar context. Children are the best hope for not one but two civilizations.

Dubito, ergo sum is the first book, both it and Credo are already available on amazon.

Thank you!

Linda Carvelli (lindacarvelli) | 2 comments My debut memoir, Perfectly Negative, is a story of a lot of love, way too much loss, and the miracle of resilience. Writing my memoir---reflecting on ten years of tragedy---validated that everything happens for a reason, or a purpose. In my case, each tragedy, presented me a lesson, gave me more strength and courage to face the next tragedy and the one after that. Ultimately, I realized life is a series of joys AND sorrows and I've found a way to embrace the negative life changes instead of fighting against them. I now see the opportunities in every challenge. I see the lesson in every heartache.

My story will have you laughing and crying (sometimes simultaneously) and cheering me on as I make sense out of all the turmoil I encountered. My wish is that you find hope and reassurance as you face your own life lessons and seek your personal and unique life lessons that will help you move forward with courage.

Yaniss Chougui | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Yaniss Chougui (Yaniss S. Chougui is my author name). I am seventeen years old and I self-published my first book last December. My book is called School Wars: The Prophecy of Light.

Description: School is a place where kids and teenagers go to get an education, but what if it's not. Many thousand years into the future a futuristic society called Bellum developed a new type of school system. In Bellum they teach their students with fear and weapons. The students go to war against other schools to prove their strengths. Among these students is Danny Starlight, a junior attending Sunset Shadows High School. He is only a warrior rank, which is embarrassing considering he is a junior, and the worst soldier at his school until he made a surprising choice that changed his life forever. Follow Danny and his friends on a journey of a lifetime as he tries to figure out his destiny.

Alvaro | 1 comments Hello! My name is Arlene, and I have just self-published my first book this week. It's a collection of poetry on being Latinx and genderqueer called Qubanitx.

Qubanitx is a collection of poetry by Arlene B. Gamio Cuervo, a genderqueer Latinx. Qubanitx is a queering of Cubana, with the adoption of an 'x' at the end to symbolize nonbinary gender identity and a 'q' at the beginning to represent a queer Latinx self.

I've just published my third book, and second through CreateSpace!

It's called Heart of the Plate.

Here's a synopsis: Jeff Wright is at the pinnacle of his Major League Baseball career, earning his way into his first All-Star Game. Not long after, Jeff suffers a gruesome, career-ending injury and ventures down a path of self-destruction, and becomes addicted to painkillers. He is arrested for drug possession. Upon completing a stint in a rehabilitation center, Jeff returns to his hometown of Lewis Rock, Georgia, where he discovers that the town’s largest job source, Reynolds Manufacturing, is being sold off and will leave hundreds jobless. He also attempts to rekindle a love that he lost years ago. What begins as mandatory community service for Jeff’s arrest quickly becomes his saving grace. Follow along as Jeff helps his hometown through a difficult time the only way he knows how -- through baseball.

Sara Zalesky | 3 comments Sara Butler Zalesky

My first novel, 'Wheeler' has been difficult to quantify. While the story revolves around a female character and women's issues, it's not quite women's fiction. There's a 'romantic' relationship, but it's not quite romance (although the first chapter - and my synopsis - smack of it). There's plenty of sport, but it's not quite that either. And there's Shakespeare! Drama to the 'enth degree! Family/friendship betrayal, concussion syndrome! AAHHH! Did I mention there's bike racing, with full on TV commentary? All in 496 pages!! (with citations, 'cause I had to, legally).

There will be two books in this series, as I didn't think anyone would read a 600+ page novel, no matter how good it was. The first book is currently available through Kindle/Amazon, and is free on Kindle Unlimited.

My request is two-fold: a read and review on Amazon, of course, but also ideas on brushing up that hated query. Below is part back cover/part query that's been mashed together. I've taken to citing an article from May's Romance University that the 'contemporary sports romance' is an exploding market but honestly, I didn't start out writing a romance. I would be more than happy to do a review exchange. I read Dan Brown novels, Rick Riordian's Percy Jackson and Red Pyramid series, LOTR. Avid reader of Mercedes Lackey and Orson Scott Card. I don't do vampires/werewolves/etc. or horror.

It is also fairly graphic, as one reviewer has pointed out. It's not 50 Shades (shudder) but there are somewhat explicit sex scenes, adult language and violence that is not intended for young eyes or sensitive readers.

***
A 'wheeler', or Rouleur, is an all-around cyclist, able to sustain a high level of output for long periods of time, over various types of terrain. A Rouleur can also excel at the time trial. Many of today's biggest names in Women's Pro Cycling are Rouleurs, like current World Champion Lizzie Armistead, cycling legend Marianne Vos, and the winner of yesterday's La Course by Le Tour de France, Chloe Hoskins.

The tale takes place in and around Enfield, England, but also features women's cycling races through France, Belgium, Germany and Italy. The novel culminates with the 2015 UCI World Championships in Richmond, Virginia.

Synopsis:
American Loren Mackenzie, a professional women’s Elite cyclist, overcame her traumatic past to sculpt herself into a World Champion. Her spirit inspires those around her, often bringing out their best. But such radiance can also burn so brightly as to uncover the darker side of a person's soul.

When the Fates intervene with a bang, Loren could not have anticipated how a simple bad day would change the course of her life. After a Knight in a Shining Jaguar - British actor Graham Atherton - stops to assist her with a flat tire, neither could deny the flare of attraction or the sense of connection between them. Despite the separation caused by both of their careers, their bond grows stronger.

Can the love of two people brought together by the Fates, triumph over betrayal and a sinister obsession from Loren's past?

Much appreciated!

Knockin' Books (knockinbooks) | 2 comments We've written a book designed to help self-published authors get book bloggers to review their books. It's on pre-order right now for a special discounted price. Here's the blurb:

As a self-published author, you’re in a tough spot. You can’t sell your book without reviews, but if no one is buying your book, how the heck are you supposed to get any reviews? Lucky for you, book bloggers have millions of followers who read their reviews and take their book recommendations as gospel. Getting an influential blogger to review your book can shoot your sales through the roof. But how exactly do you entice bloggers to read and review your book?

This book offers practical advice and insider tips for approaching bloggers and snagging their attention (without paying for it), including:
• Where to find and how to choose book bloggers
• What to say (and what not to say) when approaching bloggers
• The top reasons why bloggers might be rejecting your review requests
• Examples of good (and bad) query letters
• Hidden clues in a review policy that might increase your odds of winning a review
• How to cultivate relationships with bloggers that will help you with future releases and requests

Book bloggers are here to stay, and the authors who know how to work with them are more likely to hit the bestseller’s lists than those who don’t. And who better to tell self-published and indie authors how to approach bloggers than ACTUAL bloggers? Yeah, that’s what we thought, too.

About Knockin’ Books: We’re a group of friends who are addicted to reading. Seriously. Addicted. But we’re not just readers. Our group includes folks with decades of design, advertising, marketing and copywriting/proofreading/editing experience. Heck, we even have an Amazon best-selling, self-published author on our team. We’re a diverse group, and we’ve come together to help connect authors with readers (and vice versa).

Here's the link: http://amzn.to/2adU3cu

We hope it helps! At Knockin' Books, we're all about promoting indies!

Mellie A Story of Vinyl and Candy by S. Sawyer
Mellie: A Story of Vinyl and Candy: Melanie Woodward has everything going for her- great life, loving husband, and two incredible kids. But Mellie is a tormented woman struggling to find reason in the madness of her past. After years of battling with her demons, she becomes convinced that she only has one option left- to write the story of what really happened. She has to confront what happened with Thomas Scalia. Through old journal entries and writings she recounts a realm of hard hitting beats filled with shimmering candy kids in the underground rave scene, a descent into self-harm and drug addiction, and the escalating violence of her DJ boyfriend, Thomas. In writing her story, Mellie will find peace one way or another- through the pen or through the blade.

An existential journey of a poet who has lost his way, searching for the inspiration that originally made him move to the city, joined by a few helping hands along the way.

Devon Patterson moved to the city from the countryside in pursuit of his dream to become a poet. After almost a decade of no success, he has become less inspired and more self-destructive. The only refuge he gets, from his occupation as a shady crafter of fake profiles at a dating website company, is the occasional gamble and stimulant boost. Self-destructive tendencies and a gambling addiction don't make stable lovers.
His dreaded life of routine is interrupted one morning when a homeless stalker of his breaks into his apartment. He may just be Devon's only true fan. What starts as an annoyance, turns into a surreal conversation and examination into what Devon has become. Can he find the inspiration he once had? Will his love of poetry prevail over the tender touch of despair's consistency? Sometimes all it takes to clear one's head is a little, interference.

Chanekka Pullens (mind_elevation) | 2 comments "The Poetry Book About M.E.: Melanin Experience" was written to take us through the journey and challenges with being black. History reveals that the black man and woman around the world face tragic and sometimes fatal oppression. This book illustrates the emotional, mental, and physical impact that racism and dehumanization causes the black soul. The true intention of this book is to speak up and speak out about the inhumane actions against the person of color. To promote the awareness that is in dire need of these conditions. History repeats itself. We're trapped in this perpetual racial cycle because the views are basically the same as it's been throughout history. But now, it;s time to leave the views from the past, in history, and move towards a better day. A better day that is present in today. Not in the past. Not in history.

Gwen Piercy (gwenpiercy) | 1 comments My new book. I hope some of you will check it out.

Selena Campbell does not believe in love. Love belongs in the movies. If her past had taught her anything, it was that love only gets in the way of your real life dreams- in her case, the dreams of being a successful chef.

There was no man in the world who could deter Selena from her path.Or so she thought. Till one fine night, of all the barbecue joints, in all of the world, he walked into hers...

Dean was Selena's worst nightmare. Drop dead gorgeous, flamboyant and kind. The more time she spent with him, the less she could deny that they had some serious chemistry. But it was not long before his wild past crept into their lives. Sometimes, the past creates walls that are impossible to climb... unless you risk it all.

What do you do when love leaves you no choice?

Aaron (aaron_jacobs) Oh dang, I wish I knew about this group before Halloween so I could have advertised it then. Just put out an anthology with a fellow author and old friend of mine focusing on horror, dark fantasy and mystery. Trying to approach cosmicism while getting away from the Lovecraft pastiche angle. People seem to be liking it so far and it aligns with the genres that are popular here, so:

Amazon link

Here the ley lines of horror, fantasy, science fiction and a dozen other genres converge and form a tangle, and it is from that chaos that these stories have been woven. Icy northern fantasy shares a vast living space with Arabian myth, academic horror, weird noir, bloodstained cyberpunk, and more.

Here are twelve tales cultivated over the years since their last anthology, That Weird City. In that anthology they kept their scope narrowed to the eldritch and the cosmic, here they expand it to encompass stories from across many times and dimensions. From "Icaro," where a man's drug-fueled spirit quest leads him through a shifting dreamscape of existential quandaries, to "Shadows of the Stone Tree," where two travelers in a strange desert find themselves tracking one imaginary being while being pursued by other ones. From "Our Lady of Atlantis," where a woman's quest for artistic freedom dredges up old and forgotten powers, to "Terra Pinguis," where an arson investigator must try to explain fires that don't obey the laws of science.

Above is a link for "The Supermarket Guy IV: Fury of the Climate Changer", currently available on Amazon Kindle.

"The Supermarket Guy IV" takes off from peaceful times in a vibrant and competing supermarket era, when Harold Wannapus begins to see his franchise suffer from primarily the inability to get fresh produce from his suppliers that are facing the fury of a changing climate. This humorous take on the supermarket wars causes the CEO Harold to go on burn out, continually replanting a garden that never seems to grow in the dreaded heat, and to see his neighbors tear apart his house due to it being the hottest point on the planet. Caused by the weather or by his defective home heating system? Read the humorous pages to find out!

Orson (orsondewitt) | 1 comments I wrote a novelette about one of my greatest passions, the orca. It's a short read, but it's meant to be both educating and fun. It was described as "a literary bucket of cold water thrown into your face; a reality check, in a sense." by one of my early readers.
The sea lion rookery at Peninsula Valdes is a festive table laid for the chief hunters of the ocean. Year after year it attracts groups of orcas for an easy hunt. This time, for one of the calves, comes the time to learn the perilous practice of hunting on land. But what kind of price will he have to pay for his desire to master this skill?
Here's the webpage with the list of distributors you can buy it from: http://orsondewitt.com/orca.html

Rin Haven | 1 comments I'd like to point out that it looks like the book is a romance, but it's a sub-plot. The book is actually pretty dark. It's a gothic fantasy.

We are what our hearts have adopted.

Wednesday Marilyn's heart has adopted coldness, and her impending betrothal does little to warm it. An aristocrat raised in a gothic home, between a neglectful mother, and an eccentric father, she's long stopped looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just when it seems like there is no hope, she meets Zach. He changes everything. Unfortunately for her, she's forgotten something very important.

So important, it threatens to extinguish her new found light for good.

(It's on amazon as an ebook for free (temporarily)).
