'Inception' definitely appeared to take itself seriously, and the world knows George Lucas does!
As for the other movies you mention, I think they have riffed all of them, and if not then I hope they will.
I need to get the riff for Titanic - that movie begs so hard to be made fun of.

You mean the RiffTrax guys? Well, the HISHE guys got in first, I suspect! (See my links).
Hmm, but Inception is so surreal, that, although not comedy like MIB, it's not exactly...let's just say I think its firmly within the realm of the speculative genre, like Blade Runner and Matrix. :)
..and to me, there was a lot of tongue in cheek in Phantom Menace. I saw a lot of riffing on other tropes in the movie itself, like the Ben-Hur theme for instance and clones, and I think Jar-jar is supposed to be.. -well, he's definitely not meant as a serious character...

I read somewhere that Jar Jar was a character meant to appeal to younger kids - to increase the size of the audience that was supposed to buy all the SW merchandize. Therefore the lack of seriousness and the presence of what many saw as the annoyance factor.

Yeah, there are tons of Jar-jar kidz books floating around. Maybe i'm just a kidz at heart too, because i never took Star Wars seriously and i rather enjoyed that under-sea world which seemed to annoy many people. Hey, after all, how seriously can you take a film series that sports a ton of furry, cute and fluffy aliens?
Oops..perhaps i shouldn't have said that, eh?
*starts running again* :P

Haha, I could never take those movies seriously either, and I can hardly imagine that anyone does (but I hear people do!)
*joins Trav in running away*

Here, use this as self-defence when you get tired of running!
*Dons own Darth Vader suit and stops running.*

I....am....your....father....Luke....
Whoops, spoiler!

It's a running joke in our family, actually. If we want to enforce our authority regarding something, we say "I.. AM ... YOUR...FATHA!(/or MOTHA, in my case)" in our best D.V. voice... >:D

Trav, you seem to be a really cool mom.
To all the living-under-the-rock people who have been unaware of the paternal-filial relatuionship between Luke and Vader (ahem, Anakin) - yeah, you've been spoiled.
Have you seen the awesome musical summary of 'The Phantom Menace' by Weird Al?

Almost there. Just bear with my computer problems ... Which thread?

I think that with such limited vocabulary we'd be severely limited in ..."
Although this is dating myself, I used to write some decently cool computer programs in BASIC using less than 500 words :)
Guess it depends on the compiler and interpreter!

Still, whatever happens, I hope this group endures until we've worked through most of Mieville, since these are very stimulating and enjoyable discussions. :)

Haha, I used ot be able to do that, too! And this is not as much dating myself as dating the old post-Soviet computer education where I grew up ;)
Sometimes when I watch movies I can almost hear the voices of the RiffTrax guys in my head, making fun of them ;)
.."
...but the thing we need to ask ourselves is, do movies like Inception and Phantom Menace really take themselves so seriously as to lend themselves to satire? Perhaps not as much as Revenge of the Sith, The Empire Strikes Back, the LOTR trilogy and Harry Potter... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsYWT5...
