I read up to Chapter 8 last night -
I am loving this book so far! I love the non-european setting. It reminds me more of Russia than anything - though a Russia that never was. Liking the characters and writing. Likable heroine - always important. I think this will end up being a 4 or 5 star rating from me.

If you like this one I recommend it. It's not easy to say why but the two books are pretty similar.

Chapter 17 -

Wow! I mean...just wow! Just when you think you know what to expect from this book and it takes a left turn when you expect a right...

(view spoiler)[I like the character of Darkling - he has everything going for a young adult hero - right? - mysterious... good looking... - but I thought it was a little too easy - and then BAM he might not be what you thought - awesome twist! - I still hope there's some hope for him - that it wasn't all a lie - though I am cheering for Mal now that the reader knows - or thinks they know - the truth. I don't think I'll be able to stop reading tonight - and then have to wait for next one...

I started this with the highest expectations. And they weren't only met - they were exceeded. A very nice surprise.

Up until then I thought he was the main love interest. I guess the name Darkling should have been a clue that he may not have been as good as I thought. Lol.

I do hope he has some good in him. Somewhere. Hope the author makes him more conflicted. He is one of the most interesting "villains" I've seen in awhile. Want the second to be as good as this one was. And want it now! Lol.
