I, Claudius would also work for march's Neglected Classics - published 1934, but I think it still reads as a very modern book. The first person narrative makes it immediate and intimate. I've recently re-read it (Alphabet - G) and it still gets 5 stars from me (and I don't litter those about willy nilly)

I realise that this won't be relevant to most of the group, but for anyone who might be in the UK, BBC4 are repeating the classic 1970s dramatisation of I, Claudius. The one with Derek Jacobi as Claudius. I've never seen it (waaay to young when it came out) but it's supposed to be excellent. 13 episodes. Starting this Tuesday night, 10 pm.
