One of my favorite quotes, because it epitomizes my love of books, was posed by Gustave Flaubert:
"Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live."
I read because if I didn't, I'd be missing a part of me. Why do you read?

Kme_17 | 177 comments I read because I have always loved it even as a child. I read to see and know things I would not otherwise know and see. Finally I read because its fun : )

message 3: by DENISA (new)

DENISA HOWE | 116 comments I read because it is second to breathing and thinking and before eating most times. It awakens my senses and helps me look at the world in different ways.

message 4: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicoleramiscal) I read because I love being in a parallel world. I only just started reading last summer - Fifty Shades - and moved on to Hunger Games. The rest is history! I love to read because each book read builds up another part of who I can be, or who I already am. I love the excitement I feel finishing one and starting another. I love stumbling upon words I've never heard of and learning their meaning. And most of all, I love how books can keep me up till 3:00am even though that only gives me 3 hours of sleep before work. Awesomeness.

Brittany Perry | 229 comments I am now a writer and I love the sense of immortality in books, there will always be one or two copies of an author's book and therefore is that person truly gone? I was never really good at anthing else so I read and write its also my deepest passion, my books are like my children I couldn't live in a world where they didn't exist

Sheri (sheric12) | 6 comments escape reality and to support writers.

message 7: by Shobana (new)

Shobana Elango | 27 comments I read because I'm born to read.. And books teach me life lessons and more over, when you don't have any living relatives or friends to support you, books stay in your life and provide all of them!!

Emily Craven (emilycraven) | 21 comments Why do I breath?

Same question really, because I must to survive.

message 9: by Emily (new)

Emily Craven (emilycraven) | 21 comments I love the wonder and hope of YA books (my favourite genre), if something is wrong with the world I turn to them to lift my spirits.

Bian is always tired | 53 comments Its a question that I can never answer as reading is intrinsic to my very being.

message 11: by Zahrah (new)

Zahrah (zahrahwhy) | 20 comments As an escape from the monotony of life into a world where anything can happen.

It's just fun!

Emily wrote: "I love the wonder and hope of YA books (my favourite genre), if something is wrong with the world I turn to them to lift my spirits."

Agreed. It's always really nice to return to a teenager's simplistic way of thinking and being. Morals are black and white, fun is the main goal, and love is always forever.

Amee | 99 comments Because this is my life.

message 14: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) Because I enjoy it.

message 15: by Amirah I. (new)

Amirah I. (amrhidr) Because my life is soooooooooo boring I'd rather live in books. Fml :X

message 16: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Mugerwa (corrosivemind) Why do I read? Because if I hadn't started reading from when I was a little boy, we would not be here having this conversation. I owe my life to books

message 17: by Mrspam4ever (new)

Mrspam4ever I read to be able to step away from myself a little each day, and to go to other places that I will never be able to go to:)

message 18: by Dustin (new)

Dustin (dalittlestelf) I believe books are a gateway into the minds if their authors. Without books I am just one person. By reading i live countless lives and think in ways that are not my own

Heather (heather_u) | 8 comments I read to relax and let my mind explore.

message 21: by Alex (new)

Alex Good question.... I'm not the type that actually gets 'into' a book and is surrounded by it's world but I do enjoy reading and finding those precious well quite lines. And also it's a way to pass time in a good way haha and it's quite academic (in terms of improving your own writing skill and sometimes improves ones imagination) which is good =]

message 22: by Kimi (new)

Kimi (hateeverybeautifulday) I've always loved reading and being read to since I was tiny, and my family always encouraged it and were more than happy to keep me entertained with books! For me, a book gives me so much more than a TV - I feel much more personally connected to the characters.

I guess the main reason I read is escapism. Having suffered from depression for over a decade now, I've always felt calm and at home with my head in a book. It calms me down, and my therapist suggested starting every day by waking up a half hour early, and having a cup of tea and half an hours reading before I do anything. It sets me up for the day, and I find that the days I sleep in or don't get chance to read are worse than those when I do.

message 23: by Leniw (new)

Leniw | 7 comments I have to say that I am not really sure why I read. I can only say that there is a real difference in me in periods when I read a book and in periods when I am not. Reading changes the way I confront difficulties around me. It may be that it relaxes me but it's surely more than that.

message 24: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 32 comments I read to dewind from all the stress that I have. I take care of three kids, which one has special needs and have a grandmother that I am responsible for who has Alzheimer's. It saves my sanity by reading and escaping to another world for a couple hours a day :)

message 25: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (cherry_crush) | 30 comments I read because... that's what I do best, that's what I've been doing ever since I was six years old, it might sound weird, but that's how i feel it. Reading doesn't only bring me immense pleasure - reading broadens the mind, changed the way you think.. and mostly, it takes my mind off things, when I read nothing else matters. Nothing.

message 26: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra Juárez (isho13) I read because I enjoy stories told by people in any media. I love videogames, movies, comics, mangas, tv series and, of course, books. I love discovering new worlds by reading, meeting interesting people (it's amazing how writers can think up so many amazing characters), maybe living a new life (when you can relate to a character and, maybe by accident, you start imagining yourself in the book). It allows me to bond with other people who love reading as much as I do. It gives me new points of view in touchy themes without going through the tedious process of studying philosophy. And many other reasons that don't come to mind right now.

message 27: by Dean (new)

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) Escapism. Pure, dirty escapism.

message 28: by Gina (new)

Gina Its not so much fun as it is very interesing. I like reading because for me its like I've been given a script ( the book) and i can make a movie out of it in my way. You can interpret books more ways than you can movies tv shows or any other form of media. They give you a story and allow the reader to take it to another dimension.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle relaxing and escapism

message 30: by R.L. (new)

R.L. Stedman | 10 comments David Mitchell: 'A half-read book is like a half-finished love affair.'

I read because I fall in love: with a world, a character, or a way of expression.

message 31: by Mona (new)

Mona Ingram (monawrites) | 8 comments Being taken to the library is one of my earliest and fondest childhood memories. Today I read for escapism, mostly. Unfortunately, I can't help but notice how other writers construct their stories...annoying, because I'd rather get into the story and disappear. It's such a treat when that happens!

I had never heard this quote but I love it. I feel I read in order to live. I just love living all the different adventures. I can not imagine my life without books. I always have a book near by like it is a life line.

Alma | 24 comments to expand my horizon; to think out of the box and see how would I react to different situations. Because I enjoy it...

message 38: by Michael (new)

Michael (lovechild) | 280 comments Looking back I believe it was conditioning that started my love affair with books. I am told I was a classic hyperactive child, but I guess my folks found that giving me a book claimed me down. Then as I grew I found I was lavished with praise from adults for liking book. Somewhere along the way while growing up the stories started to connect and my imagination and author stories became a great place to be.

message 39: by Emily (new)

Emily (emkathh) i read because books make me whole. without books i'd probably be staring at a wall every day. neither do they bail on you when they are needed.

message 43: by Haley (new)

Haley I read because there has never been a time when I wasn't fascinated with books. I love being introduced to all kinds of worlds and characters and people and places and ideas that I may never have thought of on my own. I read because it opens new doors and new adventures and makes me think about myself in new ways. I read because I love it.

message 44: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 82 comments I read for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I read for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.
I read for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's taking straight to you and me.

Just kidding. That's a Johnny Cash song.

message 48: by Sudhamay (new)

Sudhamay | 4 comments I love to read cause i find a good story worth reading. Knowing the characters in a story and there is always something in a book which makes me look into different aspects of my life. Sometimes i find i am looking at things from a different point of view.

Important of all I enjoy reading a good novel.

message 49: by Nehal (new)

Nehal Hiralal | 1 comments I read to escape reality.

message 50: by Niamh225 (new)

Niamh225 | 11 comments Scout Finch in TKAM said, "Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing."

While I have always loved reading, I know what she meant. I read because I simply cannot imagine not reading, any more than I can imagine not breathing. It carries me across time, around the world and on numerous adventures. I've not had a single day without reading for pleasure (and sometimes enlightenment) since I was four. I never understood my friends who gave up reading for pleasure during semester because they didn't have time. No time for reading?! To quote The Princess Bride: inconceivable!
