Mike | 353 comments I am curious, my wife doesn't delete any of her books after she reads them. My question is if anyone else is like thisor if you do delete booksfrom your e-readers. I share an account with her and I want to delete so of the books I didn't enjoy and she dosen'teven want to do this.

Elle (louiselesley) I always remove them from my e-reader but I only ever delete free books I do not want any more from my actual account.

ladymurmur | 146 comments We both have kindles, and share an account. For our situation, there are actually two kinds of "delete" to consider: 1) removing the book from the kindle device itself, and 2) deleting the book entirely from the account on Amazon.

We only ever remove books from our kindles when they get "too full" (performance noticeably slows), which takes a long time.

We will delete unwanted "freebies" from the account (I went a bit crazy snapping up free books for a while - about half of which are ultimately deletable), but would never delete a book that we've spent money on. We re-read a LOT, and if we deleted a book from the account, we'd have to re-purchase it to read it again. If it was worth buying, it is worth keeping, and we make liberal use of our local library to determine if new authors/series are worth buying.

Yes, this can lead to a large kindle library, but this is no different to my mind than having a large physical book library. It is just MUCH easier to move! ;-)

There are books that I don't like, that my sweetie does, and books my sweetie likes, that I don't. Or that the other hasn't read yet and will read eventually. And even books that I didn't like for some reason the first time, I go back and re-read, or at least reference, for various reasons.

Unless I know for a fact that neither of us will ever, ever possibly read a particular title, I won't delete it from the account. I use the same criteria for purge/keep of ebooks that I do for paper books.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments I usually delete them from my ereader as soon as I'm done so it's less clutter. I'll delete books I really hated from my account. I don't buy many ebooks so I have no fear of deleting something I know I will never possibly read again.

Stephanie (StephsBookRetreat) | 29 comments I try to remove them from my kindle app on my phone and keep them in icloud, if possible. If the book was horrible, it gets deleted permanently. Currently, I have over 2,000 books in icloud, only been able to read a handful since I prefer paperbacks and hardcovers to ebooks.

Alisa I too have a kindle & I delete from the device but not from the cloud. I never know if i want to re-read something, loan it or maybe just look something up. I have permanently deleted a few that were just horrible. I don't see the point of it w kindle as i hv the cloud memory. For computers & other ereaders have you looked into Calibre? You could store books on your usb & then you would have the book still but would have more room on your device.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments My nook has an expansion card that is huge so I never delete from there but my kindle yes I take it off when I am done.

Like Alisa suggested I use Calibre to save all of my books.

Stephanie (StephsBookRetreat) | 29 comments I have Calibre, I just don't know how to use it. I have a Nook HD and I have te apps for Kindle, Kobo and nook on my iphone.

What do you need help with? Perhaps we can give you some tips.

Elle (louiselesley) I keep all book I have read on my iPod app! Means if I want to talk to a friend about a book or reference it, I can go there and not worry about not having it on my kindle!

Jacy (jazabell) | 214 comments I save everything to the cloud and just download the current book I'm reading to the device and then once I read it I archive it back to the cloud.

message 12: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Bolen (jadeaaustin) Mine is all saved on my kindle account so if I want to redownload I can. But I delete anything I've read, I read alot so it's easier finding stuff I haven't read if I go this way. Something she can also do is create a read folder and move books into it after she's done, I did this before I realized that when I went by alphabetical order instead of collection that the books I'd read would pop up as well as the books I hadn't read.

Emy (emypt) | 59 comments I delete a few titles - but only the odd one I am 100% certain I'll never want to read again! Everything gets downloaded to my pc and calibred anyway, so I don't worry too much about it...

Mike | 353 comments Thanks for all the feedback. My wife and I have Nooks and we do take books off our devices. I just wonder about the 1400 books she has archived. She is very much in line with all of you ie. rereading and looking things up for reference. So I guess I will leave her alone about it. Thanks.

Just be thankful that it's 1400 books that don't require space in your house. We have 7 bookcases overflowing with books and we're always getting more. We are big readers and so are our kids.

I have a huge library. 12 book shelves in the living room,1 in the bedroom,3 in my office and 4 large totes in storage. But that is what prompted me to ask this question, because even though I have all these books I still do get rid of books every so often.

message 18: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments That is the thing about tangible books. About once a year I will go through my shelves and purge. I am down to six bookshelves and I refuse to have anything that does not fit on it. Typically I donate some to the library especially books the library does not have. Some I trade others I sell.

Anyway my point is I make an effort to do something with these books and keep them moving. My ebooks I keep because well I have no other choice, cannot trade them or sell them so they sit in my calibre library.

And you know as I type this I think how depressing...

message 19: by Mike (new)

Mike | 353 comments I thinkit wouldbe great if Kindle and Nook had some kind of program where you could exchange books. Like if you gave them back three or four you didn't wantany longer they would give you one in return.

message 20: by Alisa (new)

Alisa That's a fabulous idea Mike.

message 21: by Missyb (new)

Missyb | 52 comments use a removable memory card to put your books on instead of the actual machine's memory, and the ones on the actual memory, archive the ones you've already read.
