But right now we don't live in a world like that. How would we get rid of it anyway?

It is taboo in our society to have meaningful discussions about religion. Our society values faith and upholds it as a virtue. We need to start valuing free inquiry and logic.

This.
This.
Yes, haha, the sound of frustration..I'm trying not to base my beliefs on the answer to this, but it's hard not to. All I've learned always brings me to this. I am trying to see it from an Athiests point of view.

This is what I think of when I get asked if the world would be better without religion.

"1964103 Yeah, well then science would take over the world and then polute the air more than it has already. "
How exactly has "science" polluted the air? Science probably saved your life, multiple times, and you don't even realize it.

All of the chemicals it uses and dumps it into rivers, but really thats plain stupidity to dump it into rivers....

You're making absolutely no sense.
You're making absolutely no sense.
So, you come on, spout ill-founded, baseless opinions, and complain when we don't fall to your feet in awe?

In my opinion, the world would be better without religion.
For example, my mom said it was God that helped her through my brother's death. God? Really? Well, I guess family and friends aren't getting the bit least of credit, are they?
Friends and family are the ones that help you through problems. They actually HAVE VOICES. God doesn't talk.
In your mind, you say what you want "god" to say to you. "Everything will be okay!" or, "Homosexuality is wrong." Nope, that's not God saying that. It's YOU.
It's your insecurity that says, "Homosexuality is wrong."
It's your inner strength that says,"Everything will be okay!"
"Man created God in their own image." Absolutely true.

It isn't "science" that's done this, it's human society. Yes, many of our technological advancements have come about as a result of science, not religion. This goes back to the mastery of fire, which was achieved through the scientific method (trial and error, observeation, experiment, etc.) rather than religion (praying for fire).
Your argument fails on several levels. First of all, technological development (and its resultant negative side-effects, such as pollution) has not come about because of science; rather, science has been a tool used towards these ends.
Second of all, you imply that a world dominated by religion, as opposed to science, would not pursue technological advancement. This is demonstrably false, as just about every culture that has ever existed, religious or not, has pursued some sort of advancement.
Finally, your argument fails basic common sense. Do you really want society to revert to a completely undeveloped state so that we do not pollute or otherwise adversely affect our environment? Do you really want to live in a cave and survive by collecting berries?
When humans first came to the western hemisphere about 10,000 years ago, a wave of extinctions followed. It is impossible for human society to not somehow impact the environment. However, when we find ways to minimize and mitigate these impacts, how do we do it? Oh yeah, science .
Jenna wrote: "All of the chemicals it uses and dumps it into rivers, but really thats plain stupidity to dump it into rivers...."Science has also helped us figure out the harm of doing this to our environment. It has helped us to understand global warming. Unfortunately, religious idiots are the ones who usually refuse to see this.
Nathan wrote: "I always love when idiots complain about science as they type on their computer in their heated or air conditioned home, listening to their ipod and watching television. Jesus frickin Christ, really?"
Jesus H. Christ, actually.
Jesus H. Christ, actually.
Religion is a device by which we give meaning to our existence. Our own monumental egotism can't allow for the fact that maybe we are not the chosen ones of an omnipotent being and that our existence is the culmination of billions of years of pure luck that will be over as quickly as it began.
