Louisa Eggleton | 8 comments I analysed my reading data and found I read a book every sixteen days - not bad for three kids, working full time and being a girl guide leader. My average length of book of 575 pages so it worked out I only read 35 pages a day! That's bad so for the rest of the year I want to up it to fifty!

Darcy (drokka) | 80 comments They say that on average a person reads 30-45 pages hour. Obviously, print type and font play a role, as does how gripping a book is. Also, whether you do close reading or not. So, I'm thinking that as a mum of 3, getting an hour of reading done a day is something to herald. :)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Louisa, I have to agree with D, I think you are doing great for the amount of activities you have going on.

Louisa Eggleton | 8 comments Oh, thanks! Wish I had time to read more! So little time, so many books....

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Isn't that the wish of every true bookworm? lol

message 6: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Does anyone read slower than that? I always felt that I read at an average rate, but recently realized that I don't. Some books, obviously, lend themselves to be read quicker than others, and vice versa. I've been a reader all my life, since a young girl. It doesn't disturb me I just assumed the more I read the quicker I would read. But I notice my communication level goes way up in a matter of days when I am reading regularly. Does anyone find that to be the case?

Louisa Eggleton | 8 comments I completely agree with you regarding the improvement of language quality. Must admit a certain amount of pride when I've used a word that no one else knew the meaning of. Isn't that naughty?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I try to read 50 pages a day and usuallyu I can read about 4 books a month. I always have to wait for a ride so it gives me time to read whuile I wait and I read on my break and sometines my lunch and I read at home. It does depend on the book though.

:-) Not naughty LOL. That would never happen here in my home. My son was an Eng. Lit. major in Grad school (medieval literature). He knows words and their origins like I know recipes from heart. But he's kind and doesn't use words him mama can't understand :-).

I remember the days I took the subway and bus to work. It was an 1 1/2 hr.trip one way (I lived in Bklyn and worked in Manhattan). I read so much in those days, but can't say I miss the traveling.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I don't drive at all. I take subsidized buses and taxis.

Not at all naughty. What's the point of learning something new if you can't use it and be proud of your accomplishment? As long as you aren't terrifically stuck up about it, I am all for it

I don't think that how many books you read in a period of time is all there is to it. If the time you spend reading, however long you have, is enjoyable, then it is enough. My four kids are grown and I have far more time to read than I once did, but the time I spent reading back then was so sweet because it was such a treasure.

Happy Reading!

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I try to read at least 100 pages a day but sometimes I can do this and sometimes not. I generally read two books a week.

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) | 137 comments Nancy, ditto for me! My goal is to read 150 books this year (I read 145 last year). I'm only one book "behind" schedule.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I am 15 books behind schedule.

message 16: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennepstein) Just curious--do people count the books they start but don't finish? I find as I get older (and reading time ever more precious) that I no longer force myself to finish something I'm not absolutely engaged in--which may either show efficiency or lack of character (jury's out!).

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) | 137 comments I do not count it if I don't finish it.

I definitely do. Usually, I'll give a book about 100 pages or so. If I'm really not feeling it by then I give up. I still count the book because I spent time on it. I also shelf it on my "abandoned" shelf.

Sometimes, I come across a book that is so bad I simply need to finish so I could write a ranty review. lol.

I have a DNF shelf that is separate from my read shelf so I don't think it goes into my stats. I agree that life is too sort to read bad books. :-)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I personally don't count it as read. Not sure if Goodreads counts it. I have a shelf I call duds. One of my coworkers today read a book she hated and she went around and asked ppl if they read the book and if they said no, she said "Well don't because it's crap." I commented "way to promote reading. If you are interested what book it was, it is : Into Thin Air A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer

Cheryl A | 1058 comments Since joining Goodreads, the amount I read has gone WAY up. I love participating in the challenges and they give me both goals and direction in my reading that was lacking before. Before GR, I tried to read a minimum of 10 books a month and I aimed for reading one non-fiction and one "literary" novel a month and the rest whatever caught my fancy. Since GR and the group challenges, I'm reading a whole lot more and have only come across a couple of duds. I generally finish what I've started, particularly for challenges, and found really enjoyable books that I would not have otherwise chosen.

I found myself looking for high points words to use on Words With Friends. I don't play it anymore so my speed has gone up, lol.

My understanding is that if you enter a finished date that it will count towards your GR challenge.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I am forcing myself to read a book I just cant get into by reading it for a day between books to help bookhangovers. I don't know if I will ever finish it but I will consider it read.

message 25: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) No, I don't count a book I don't finish either. I don't even list it anywhere because I don't keep a DNF list.

Generally speaking, if I abandon a book, I do try at another time to read it again. Sometimes I am able to finish it sometimes not.
