No...it wasn't. I'm 28 and I remember reading it when I was about 14 or 15. It was so long ago...and the book seemed old then too. 1980's at most.
Oh trust me. I know V.C.Andrews. Read almost every book byt her and even the ones after her death. I own quite a few of them....but it was much darker then Andrews writes. Andrews skims over rape and gore, this one was written in full detail as was the scenes.
My first thought was V.C. Andrews too!I can't find a Goodreads entry for this book, but here's a google-books link to a book called "The Darkness Within." It mentions an evil grandmother, but not twins, so I'm not sure it's right:

If you look at the 'common terms/phrases' for that book at the bottom of the page, "twins" is there. Looks probable.

It started with a little blond girl that was always sent to her grandmothers and the grandmother abused her. Like one time the little girl wet herself and the Grandmother scrubbed her privates with a wire brush. There was other things and though she told her ‘loving’ mother and father they told her to suck it up. Finally the dad dies and it gets worse on her and finally when she’s a teenager she runs away and begins to work for a very nice lady. The girl ends up falling in love with her son and they marry later on. She soon has twin girls and each of them favors the one of the twins, one time she unknowingly tries to drown the one that she dislikes.
It goes on and the twins become pregnant and they end up going back the the girl’s mother and grandmother and they find out that blond and blue eyed twins run in the family and one always dies.
It is during this time that the girl had a other side to come out and protect her. The grandmother is killed by one of the twins and she takes the blame and the family goes into hiding and she soon escapes and after a bunch of truth that comes out the father kills himself, the twins kill each other and all the babies that they had. The nice grandmother gets out with one of the twin girls…she has blue eyes and blond hair….
To me it was a scary and creepy book at the time. I would like to find it again.
