S&L Podcast- #122 - Interview with Michael J. Sullivan
Darn you're fast this time!. And yes my dear friends it's the end of our season in the sun... or flourescents, as the case may be.
We talk all about it ont he show, but March 29, the wrap-up of Downbelow Station will be the last video episode of our season on Geek and Sundry.
We may yet do another string of videos, we're looking into that. Probably more authors guides, and leave the book kick-offs and discussions to the audio podcast. We'll have to see.
And we'll try to make the next round of videos in a way that's flexible, so we can podcast them and do audio versions etc.

Veronica - I have those vacuum seal wine stoppers too but mine work well. Maybe it's the brand?
edit: this is the brand I have http://www.amazon.com/Vacu-Vin-098145...

We need whiteboards Aaron!
Sad news that the videos are ending. I really hope there will be another run sometime.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I love the podcasts, but it's the video show that introduced me to Sword and Laser, and I'll be so sad not to have it around anymore. I will miss it a lot. :(
Aaron, you should keep on with the whiteboards regardless! :)

Even back in the 70s before 24 hour TV and with only 3 channels to choose from the BBC still managed to put out Welsh speaking programmes and the Eisteddfod got live coverage. Since then things have become much better.
Am sure there was a time when the language was discouraged but would imagine numbers of Welsh speakers are probably at a record high given population growth and Welsh being used in schools.
Has anyone read the Mabinogion? Wonder what it would be like to read in Welsh. Pretty darned cool most likely!

I especailly liked the in-depth interview with Mr. Sullivan that is is full of insider knowledge and know-how about self-publishing. It was very educational.
I'm very sad about the end of video show. It won't be easy for me to say goodbye to the awesome space castle, Aaron's great whiteboard reviews and especially Lem the cyborg dragon... :(
I have to ask, is there anything we can do to stop this from happening? I'm 90% sure that G&S will be picked up by Youtube for another season so I guess it is not about that.If G&S decided not to continue S&L show, maybe you guys can start your own channel independently. I'm sure a kickstarter campaign would be more than enough to keep the show independently online.
But if it is about your other projects and jobs, and how you have to split your time and energy; we understand and except that. Thank you for all the great video show episodes. I would not find this amazing community without them.
Yes there are things that can be done and we are doing them. And they involve all the tings you say. It just means a break in the video shows for awhile, but hopefully *fingers crossed* not forever. Whether it's by a Kickstarter, another network, or something else entirely, all has to be figured out still.
Video is hard!

HA! That would be awesome. But not necessary. This is an extremely friendly and understandable end to this video run. Geek and Sundry and Felicia in particular have been nothing but awesome. So no petitions needed. Just give V and I a chance to figure out when and how we want to do more video and we'll get there. That's the lovely thing about the Internet! We learned a LOT in this season, and I think what we come back with will be much better for it.
Also this gives us a chance to really make the audio podcast shine and put in all the hard work on the anthology.

We're not sure yet! There's a lot of figuring out that needs doing. It wouldn't be out of the question for more audio shows.

I really have enjoyed the video show, and would gladly follow it in any incarnation it recurs in. Heck, even google hangouts would be fine with me, maybe spliced with prepared video if that's possible. I'll certainly be looking forward to the podcast with greater anticipation now.
Thanks for getting me back to reading more, I wouldn't have come to Goodreads if not for Sword & Laser. Now you're all stuck with me. :P

To be fair to yourselves the season has been a long one.
IIRC I first watched when The Assassin's Apprentice was book of the month.
Am guessing that was shown last October as my daughter and I watched it together, and I read nothing but Robin Hobb until Christmas!
No idea if there were any videos before that- too lazy to go look! lol
Point being I don't recall any other G&S vid going so long uninterrupted other than the Hangouts.
Actually, that means you have to keep going or Pat Rothfuss will call you wimps and you know you will never live that down! :P
Again, really do hope the videos make a return after a well earned break. Will really miss them.

So Pern is in the running?! That would be awesome!!

Question regarding anthology:
How long (pages) will this first volume be? How many stories? Are we talking a substantial volume or like under a hundred thousand words? Will there be an audio version?

Sad to hear the video show is ending, but seeing how far behind I am on the episodes, this means I finally have a chance to catch up!
Count me in amongst the crew that thinks Aaron should keep doing whiteboards and just posting the links here instead of sending links to T&V. :)
More later, when I've listened. And by later I mean no earlier than Sunday. ::grumbles about travel::

Lem will probably go to Aruba or Barbados for the hiatus, some place where all drinks are served with little umbrellas in them.

Do they serve those in Barbados?

They have had at least 1 video/month since last April. The format has changed a few times since then to get to the current/awesome format.
They only record once a month though. They do:
* Current month's wrap-up
* Next month's kick-off
* Author guide x2
Now that Tom lives in LA it adds extra overhead to them getting together to shoot videos too.
If it's a matter of funding, I hope you do a kickstarter or something. I'm happy to kick in money.
Though I wouldn't be upset if all the book discussion reverted back to the podcasts and you guys just did the author guides in video form.

Well, you're mentioned in the first 2 minutes, so you should probably listen to that much at least!

I would also like to see P. Aaron's whiteboards continue they are fab!
Im with Robert on ending the show with Tom in the Princess leia outfit too with a sign that says he'd just been vf'd lol!
If Lem would like a holiday I have a pre-school full of children who are very into dragons at the moment (they have had me drawing them all week!) the kids would love a visit from him and maybe make story times extra special!!

Thank you for your kind answer, Tom. In whichever format you and V decide to continue S&L in the future, I want you to know I am on board, we all are... :)
P.S. If you need Lem to be taken care of while you guys are gone; I have a lovely backyard full of bio-mechanic unicorns and shekih huluds from Arakis ;)

Really not sure how I feel about this...

Yeah. I figured if the video show was ever to go away, these may have been some of the reasons why. Not saying that they are, but I can see them as plausible. Here's hoping we'll see it back in some form or another some day.
Thanks Tom and Veronica (and all the other people involved) for doing a great series. And I'm not just saying that because I was fortunate enough to have entrys selected for "On this date in alternate history" a few times.

Really not sure how I feel about this..."
Ok before I get leaped on by lots of angry peeps im only joking!! Whichever way Tom and Veronica end the show shall be awesome because they are their :P

For Lem, y'all should ship him around and let people raise him for a bit. Kinda like what V is doing with the dog. Or perhaps we treat him like the Stanley Cup. Just don't think he'd like us throwing him in a pool or drinking beer from his head.

Come off it Tom, you can just teleport to meet up with Veronica in the Space Castle.

That sounds...ominous.
Seriously, the inspiration for the whiteboard series was and remains T&V's generous invitation to the community to contribute to the S&L experience. They're fun to do (much more so than dry academic writing) and I'd certainly welcome the opportunity to work with y'all again, in any capacity. Dragon sitting. Blaster practice.
I am sad that this chapter of S&L video is closing, but it will doubtless lead to even an even more fantabulous second chapter, whether by kickstarter or some other route.
For the final video ep of this season, Lem should DEVOUR THE SET (or at least every book on set).
Really liked the interview with Sullivan, especially his comments about traditional publishing vs. self-publishing, and how it can result, except for the very top tier, in a difference between success in terms of recognizability (traditional) vs. success in terms of making of living (self-published).

Anyone that doesn't like your whiteboards has not ever read a book because they are still only 18 months old, not sure even that is an excuse tbh.
And so educational too. Bound to be a winner.

Enjoy!
