Carissa, having read and reviewed Book One a few years ago (either under my given name Howard Lipman, or PanOrpheus, my pen name) I just bought Book two and will read/review it this week. My new book 'The Diplomat and Desperado Stories', is Cyberpunk-related and is about two detectives from the future who live in Noirtown, where everything is in black and white with shades of gray in between. They find that they are limited to 48 hour 'cases'. Dreadful things can happen to them if they exceed the time limit. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Diplomat-Despe... My email is parisbks@yahoo.com

Yes, that's what we were discussing. The main consensus was 'said' is what readers want/expect. I'm not sure, personally believe readers skip read them anyway. I know I do.
If you mean over-use, as in, constant he said she said in dialogue. Yes, it should only be used when you need to remind the reader who is speaking.

Kevin (kevingchapman) | 21 comments I'm always willing to do review swaps, so please reach out if you want one. I only post honest reviews, and I expect honest reviews in return.

On the "said" topic, I agree that it's not always necessary to identify the speaker. If it's obvious, then leave it out. But, when writing dialogue, "said" should be the default and the word used most, with some additional description as needed and with other "voice" words used where appropriate, but sparingly. I read a great article once that "said" should be the exclusive word for dialogue unless there is a very specific reason to use something else.

Kaylin McFarren (kaylinmcfarren) | 30 comments I would love to do a review swap if anyone is interested. I have a new time travel book releasing on May 18th and am interested in reading all kinds of genres. This is what HIGH FLYING is all about:

Skylar Haines has struggled with personal demons most of her life, going to dark extremes to subdue anxieties rooted in her tragic past. On a perpetual hunt for the next adrenaline hit, she discovers a passion for flying and becomes a hard-edged stunt pilot, verging on obsession. In the sky, following her most daring airshow, she encounters a mysterious storm and almost collides with another aircraft, sending her into a perilous dive. Guided by a mysterious voice, she manages a safe landing but finds herself transported to another time.

Eight months before she was born. One week before her father was murdered.

Though baffled by her circumstances, Skylar soon arrives at a single certainty: Before her lies a remarkable chance to change her family's destiny drastically for the better -- or possibly even worse -- depending on the choices she makes, before her window of opportunity closes.

Hi Ray, I am rather new to GoodReads, but would absolutely be interested in a review swap with you. I am a counselor working with those with eating disorders and other addictions, so I'd be very interested in your work and your story.

My book is about using language (affirmations, sef-talk, etc.) to create a better experience in life. It's a different take on the traditional use of affirmations. https://www.amazon.com/Find-Your-Word...

Kimberly DuBois | 4 comments If anyone is interested in a review swap with a self-help type of book, I am excited to hear from you! Here is an excerpt from my book Find Your Words! Words to Transform Your Life.

https://www.amazon.com/Find-Your-Word...

Find Your Words!: Words to Transform Your Life

You Have to Feel It!
An affirmation begins and ends with how it feels. How a word feels to me will be different from how it feels to you. These subtle differences in feeling and meaning can be monumentally important when creating affirmations.

For example, I worked with a gentleman once who was trying to find an affirmation that would help him feel ‘good enough’. All his life he’d felt that he as a person, his efforts and accomplishments were never quite good enough as compared to others.

I believed that his ability to feel good enough was vital to his progress, so I threw out several of my best combinations; “It’s ok to feel good enough”, “I’m allowed to feel good enough”, “I am willing to feel good enough” and with each one he just looked at me, shaking his head. None of them resonated with him. Though they felt good to me, they each left him feeling a little sad.

Upon further exploration we discovered that when he was younger if he’d done things that weren’t quite up to his fathers’ standards, like bring home a B on his report card instead of an A, his father would say, “I guess that’s good enough.”

Even though those words provide a sense of relief for me, releasing me from self-judgments because I am indeed good enough the way I am, for him they reminded him of defeat. For him being ‘good enough’ was a subpar disappointment and didn’t feel good at all.

When we simply dropped ‘enough’ and focused on just being good, everything changed, and he was finally able to feel the relief in the words. It’s all about how it feels and the emotion the words elicit from you.

Connie Shipley | 29 comments looking for review swaps. I have an esoteric-thriller out on Amazon. FAR BEYOND THE QUIET : Catriona Saunders, a world-renowned psychic is in search of a well-deserved holiday. She stumbles upon a quaint villa nestled in the mountains of Tuscany, Italy. Catriona was sadly mistaken as to finding some peace and quiet. At first, she is enamored with the tranquility of the Monte Pisano and the rustic house she came upon. When suddenly she notices an old oak tree at the far end of the garden. The characteristics of the oak tree enthralled Catriona. Its majestic branches were reaching out toward the impeccable black sky. What secrets can this old tree hold? Can the seven graves encoded with symbols forming the Seal of God or Sigillum Dei Aemeth, bring to light the mysteries? Stories of the past had been lost in the darkness of time. A painful evolution had befallen the oak tree. The villagers prayed that their faith would allegorically purify them. While several churches had been built, the castle of Montecchio had been turned into a Monastery. Thus, ruled by the Charterhouse of Calci. Due to constant floods and wars, there had been many religious doubts. Pagan rituals would surface from time to time. Spells were whispered in the wind, hoping to change the course of life and death. God’s geometry had been questioned. But the real question is, why Catriona Saunders....the psychic who speaks to the dead? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/109...

Connie,

Many writers cannot support themselves by writing alone. They have regular jobs. I am no exception. I do NOT have time to read other authors works. I do NOT mean this as a slight. It does not mean that I don't read your works. I do. But if you have more time than I do (which I doubt), would you please start a book club of readers. I'm sure you have of friends and you're very likable. I need my book reviewed, especially by women. If you don't have a club, START ONE, please read my stuff. I will return the favor whenever I can. 2024 looks good!!!
Sincerely Rath

message 2249: by [deleted user] (new)

I am looking for honest reviews from anyone, I fear that other writers, who give good reviews are wanting good reviews in return, even if there work is not good.
See anytime you have an alterior movtive you're conmprimised. What if what your writing is garbage???
If you want my opinon, I only base reviews on 2 things, and this should be the defacto stadard for EVERYONE.
1) Orginal, if I can tell you a story that you've never heard before I did my job. Do you know how hard orginality is??????
2) Did you finish the story, whether or not you liked the characters, did you have to find out what happened???
That's it!!!!
I don't read things that I'm not intrested in, like Transgender Romance, Rosy O'Donnell Biography, Midget Erotica, because I am automatically going to hate it. That is how I can be objective.
