Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think Dorian "dumped" Sibyl when he found out she could no longer act?

2. Do you think the painting really did change after Dorian and Sibyl's argument or was Dorian only imagining it?

3. Has Lord Henry had a bad influence on Dorian? Explain.

He fell in love with her characters. So when she could no longer act, he saw that she was simply an average woman, and he was no longer as entranced by her. He never truly loved Sybil, the woman, he loved Sybil as Juliet, or any of the other women she portrayed.

2. It's hard to say at this point if it really changed or if he imagined it. The imagination can be very powerful, however when he first noticed it he wasn't thinking about that. It caught him off guard. So it's hard to say that it was his imagination running away with him. However, it could have been a trick of the light, and then once he saw it, he always saw it because by that point it was there in his mind's eye.
3. I think Lord Henry may be a bad influence on Dorian. Simply because he has caused Dorian to see himself, and the world, in a much different, more skewed way than he used to. Because Lord Henry tends to view the world in a very self-absorbed kind of way, and through his, almost worship, of Dorian, he has slowly made Dorian view things that way as well. However, this doesn't become quite as apparent until Dorian breaks up with Sybil.
