20.5 Bigger is Better- Kate S's task: Tournament of Books 2013

This task is inspired by the Tournament of Books finalists for 2013.

Please enjoy a book which shares one of the following attributes with the finalists:

1. A book written by an author who shares their first and last initial with a finalist:
JG, MS, GF, BF, MM, LE, JW, AJ, HM, KP, LG, AM, CW, LB, AH, DA, SH, CB, MK-first and last initials must match exactly, but you can ignore any middle names/initials. If a book has a co-author or multiple contributors all authors must share their first and last initials with a finalist from the list.

2. A collection of short stories by a single author (Dear Life: Stories, Building Stories)

3. A book with "Historical Fiction" on its main genre page (HHhH: A Novel, The Orphan Master's Son, The Round House, The Song of Achilles, Bring Up the Bodies, Beautiful Ruins)

4. A book off the Afghanistan-Iraqi War list (The Yellow Birds, Fobbit, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk)

5. A book with "Family" on its main genre page (Where'd You Go, Bernadette, May We Be Forgiven)

6. A book with "Contemporary" on the main genre page (The Fault in Our Stars, Gone Girl, How Should a Person Be?, Arcadia)

Note: Genres "Sequential Art", "Comics", "Comic Book", and "Manga" may be used for this task

Required: Please identify the option when you post.

Dee (austhokie) | 8973 comments for option 1 to clarify - do the first initials of the authors have to match and the last initials - like for JG an author who also has JG...or does a GJ work? to make sure I understand

message 6: by Kate S (new)

Kate S Only JG would work Dee. Hope this helps.

D.G. Kate - Can I read a book of short stories in Spanish for #2? Cuentos Mas Que Completos.

The title translates to something like: Complete Short Stories and it's a compilation of 3 of his books of short stories that he wrote before and after exile.
Cuentos escritos antes del exilio
Cuentos escritos en el exilio
Mas cuentos escritos en el exilio

The author is a famous (at least in Latin America) short stories writer. His Wiki page mentions it:

This certainly looks like a collection of short stories written by a single author. Enjoy!

D.G. Awesome, Kate! I've been trying to find a book to read in Spanish for the challenge. :) I haven't read one in years and I'm getting rusty.

I think I'll institute that for every challenge, I have to read a book in Spanish. :)

message 13: by Kate S (new)

Kate S Quite the lofty goal D.G. I wish you luck!

Spanish is my native language so it's no biggie. :) But I don't read much in Spanish anymore so I'm trying to remedy that!

Thanks, Ann! I hope you find a few titles you can enjoy.

I feel exactly the same way!

Sure thing! I enjoyed this book, hope you do too.

Claire, that's also a great choice for 15.3, as it's a 2-fer...set in Ireland and shelved as humor. I am going to read some Marian Keyes for that task, as I haven't read all of her works yet but really enjoy the ones I have read.

Claire (proud-mum) | 1086 comments Yup I'm going to read This Charming Man by Marian Keyes for that task :)

Kristine (kristinekae) | 251 comments Can we read one of the books off of the list from option1? Or does it need to be someone else?

Kate S Kristine wrote: "Can we read one of the books off of the list from option1? Or does it need to be someone else?"

Yes! You can read any of the books from the list. Option 1 is the catch-all to make sure they were all represented! Hope you enjoy.

message 29: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 106 comments For the anthology, does it have to be stories written by the author or could it be like a collection of fairy tales compiled by or written down by one person such as Fairy Tales from the Arabian Nights?

I am going to stick with a collection written by a single author. So Fairy Tales from the Arabian Nights, unfortunately, will not work.

yes, any one of them should work! And several of them were pretty good. :)

message 35: by Fandury (new)

Fandury | 957 comments I encountered a slight problem.

I decided to read a book from author Chris Beckett, as CB was one of the initials in the task.

Now i wanted to post in the Complete tasks thread and wanted to check which author from the tournament has the same initials, and discovered there isn't one.

I know it's probably my own mistake for not checking before reading the book and I will try to fit the book somewhere else and read something different for this task (even it is getting a little bit late), but perhaps this should be corrected even this late in the challenge.

message 36: by Bea (new)

Bea @ Fandury: I found this listing on the website:

"Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt"

I think that words for CB. It was at the bottom of the page under the "long list".

Hm, but the tasks say it should be one of the finalists and if the long list would count, there would be a lot more initials that could be used.

It's no real problem for me, as I will use my Chris Beckett book for task 20.6 (the advantage of being German and so all English books work for me for option 1). I simply thought I should mention it if someone else tries to use this initials, and there is not much time to change books around anymore.

I apologize for the confusion, I am glad you were able to find a place you felt more comfortable using it. As the CB initials have been there from the start I am going to let them stand for the last ten or so days of the challenge. I no longer have my notes regarding the creation of this task and am not sure where I may have seen the CB initials. (Although, I do suspect it was poor penmanship on my part, and an inability to decipher my own scrawl).

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
