Just do it! Lol! :D Yay!

Kai Hunter | 192 comments Page 105 (large print version) I agree that so far it seems Rowling is adding language for shock value and in my opinion she seems dead set on highlighting the worst part of all her characters well..character. I'm finding myself thinking that the story would work better for me if there was just one sympathetic persona. I am gravitating towards Jarwinda and Kay for that, but I've warned myself not to get too attached. I realize that it's still very early in the book but I want to write Rowling a letter and explain that we all have dark parts to us but that doesn't make up the whole of who we are. Can't she let a little sunshine in?

Oh and while I'm talking about Rowling it's time to make a admission...I've never read any of her other books. I got the first and started reading it aloud to my son and he wasn't interested, so I stopped and never finished it. So I actually don't have a basis for comparison with her other work.

Harry Potter is worth a read, Karen. So well-written. Transports you to another world. And tons of awesome characters!

The first 85% of this book is a rough draft. It's so rough that sandpaper kicked it out of their family tree. I felt like Rowling was lazy and not in the mood to write at all but she obligated to. The last 15% is a final draft- well executed.

Harry Potter is brilliant! Every book book was good. She used up all her talents on those books! :P

Kai Hunter | 192 comments page 420 (lpv) Well, the characters haven't gotten any more likeable, but I find myself wanting to know what happens to them. Even though I feel like I have to wipe grit from my eyes as I read so this might be more a function of my own nosiness as opposed to a well written story. It has always been a dream of mine to visit England someday, I still have that dream but it's toned down a little as a read this book. If England is just like America but with a different accent then maybe I'll visit Japan instead (LOL). On a professional note, I was shocked when Kay gave out names of her clients. Working in a field where confidentiality is not only a mandatory part of the job but legally required I can't imagine giving up names after a couple glasses of wine. On the whole I am glad that I got a chance to read this story and I'm looking forward to finishing it.

On a side note, our "break time" library at work has all six Harry Potter books in it, so I think I'll give 'em a go.

You will actually start to like Rowling since you're going from The Casual Vacancy to Potter. Potter was magical. :D

Kai Hunter | 192 comments Well, I've finished it. I enjoyed the ending but it was very predictable. I'm glad I read the book, and I don't view it as a waste of time but I'm still taken aback by the disproportionate amount of character darkness. I love that feeling when I'm getting close to the end of a book and I don't want the story to end. Sometimes I even slow down reading to drag the feeling out. In this case, I couldn't wait for the book to end. If I could have given it 2.5 stars, I would have. Now on to our April reads!!!!

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Karen, I can't wait until you're knee-deep into Harry potter! Way better!

Amen! Reading is NEVER a waste of time, but watching The Kardashian's is. ;)
