SOLVED - Inter-galatic school visits multiple worlds [s]

I'm looking for this book I read back in the mid 80's. The main character is a member of an inter-galatic school. He visits multiple worlds, including:

1) Earth - While on Earth he fights a polar bear for money.
2) A War Planet - This planet is used strictly for wars between nations. Governments choose the era they want to fight in and send their troops to this world to fight. In this case, the battle was a WW1 era trench style war. I believe they used updated weapons.
3) I believe the last world was a self contained "ship" that had various compartments with various environments to house different species.

Well, the last one sounds like Rendezvous with Rama, but the others certainly don't.

I've read Rama and it was nothing like this book I'm trying to find.

All three visits, and possible more, occurred in the one book.

The last world I described could be thought of as a zoo, but I do not believe it was.

I also believe the main character was "poor" and had to make his own way in this "school". Some of his friends were paid for by their families, governments, etc.
