Arisa Discussion Questions

1. In high school, I totally had more male friends because all the girls thought I was bizarre.
2. I love writing real letters, but it's too expensive now and no one does it. Now I use email.
3. Arisa had some serious problems. I don't think it's Tsubasa's fault.
4. When it was innocent, I would have wished to become an author--and have been ignored, probably. In the creepy version later, I'd probably get weirded out and stop.
5. It's not hard to get suckered into a cult. If you think about it, hardcore fans of various things could be considered a cult of personality, which is what the King Time has become. They just started relying more and more on King for happiness, solving their problems, etc. Because they never see King, they only see the good and not the bad. Then when King goes bad, the hardcore followers punish the ones that do not believe enough. The people who don't believe as strongly start pushing themselves to believe so they don't get punished, and so they start separating themselves from the other "non-believers." ...Sorry for the detailed response to this one. I had a class on "why people believe weird things" and one of the things we went over was cults.

2. I like sending and receiving letters, but I haven't done it in a really long time.
3. No, I don't think so. Tsubasa had no way of knowing what Arisa was going through.
4. I probably wouldn't. I'd probably think it was an internet scheme or something.
5. I guess if some mysterious figure promised to grant me any wish, I would probably do whatever I thought would make them happy if I thought I could get whatever I wish for.

2. Tsubasa and her sister exchanged letter for three years. Have you ever had a pen pal? Do you like writing letters?
3. Tsubasa blames herself for what happens to Arisa. Do you think she is justified in thinking that?
4. Would you participate in "King Time"? If so, what would you wish for?
5. Why do you think the followers of King have become so cult-like?
