Which do you think is more evil? I mean we know King Taranis is nuts but Prince Cel- he's just bad to the bone right?
To be honest, Merry herself drives me crazy sometimes. I'm listening to the audibooks so it may be the way the actress reads her, but she just seems really self-righteous sometimes. She gets really irritated with "her men" when they don't just do whatever she wants when she wants. Like she needs to be the center of the universe, and their feelings really aren't taken into consideration. They should just be more than happy to serve her. And she gets really patronizing with them sometimes. It irritates me.
Irene, yes I think that's part of it. I don't think Taranis actually wants to hurt Merry; I think he's just a selfish lunatic. But Cel seems to be actively malicious, and was always from what we can tell. Nichole, I think that Merry *has* to be imperious in order to rule strongly and be respected. It's not that she wants to be that way - it's that she needs to be that way. She's still a far cry from Andais. Also, I would argue the men can be just as self-righteous and patronising towards her, if not more so.
Taranis and Cel. Both creep me the hell out, but I see what you mean. Maybe Taranis is more on the delusional side of things...seems he can still reason and maintain a nice facade. He's sick, but I think you could theoretically get away from him if you pretended to play nice. Cel is more like demonic possession where you've no chance of reasoning with him or getting away from him. He's so broken and demented that he can't even fake normality.
Queen Andais...she's wicked. She's cruel. But she is VERY aware and ALWAYS in control.
They're all very different kinds of frightening.
Out of the three, Andais is my fav. Hell, even she was speechless when she found out what happened to her brother.
Ugh I can practically hear Cel screeching in my head. Scary scary scary. I wouldn't want to get anywhere near him, so me being able to bitch slap him is sorta out.
Sniper rifle?
I think the major difference - the reason why Andais is not at true villain for me - is that Andais is fair. She has a sense of honour and justice, even if it's pretty warped. Taranis and Cel have absolutely no honour at all, and cannot be trusted in the slightest. They have no morals. Andais has morals. Strange ones, but she's consistent.Sadly a sniper wouldn't kill Cell. I'd love to see Merry turn him inside out, though. Hopefully one day...
Speaking of scary, Siobhan terrifies me even more than Cel, I think. She seems so inhuman. And we don't even know her motivations - at least Cel, for all his wickedness, has a basis.
Jonas Wyatt from Lora Leigh's Breeds books really irks me sometimes... but his "story" is coming out soon and he'll "get his" heh heh heh
Julia, yes, Andais is consistent. And I would agree and the warped sense of honorable...warped but THERE. Turning Cel inside out would be ever so fab. Oh, to have a hand of power...
Siobhan-is that Cel's captain?
Yep, the creepy pale one.I sort of want to name a future daughter Andais...but that seems a little odd. :D
Siobhan...blind loyalty and fierce ambition as her motivation?Naming a kid Andais...it's a pretty name and only LKH readers would question your sanity, so you're probably safe!
I like the way I said Andais in my head prior to reading LKH's glossary, but the actual pronunciation doesn't appeal as much. Still, I think you're right. LOL @ 'question your sanity'.I don't think Siobhan is that ambitious - she seems content to remain Cel's bitch, from what we've seen. Maybe she plans to overthrow him once he's king? Possible, but again, we haven't seen anything to support it. I agree she's blindly loyal, but in a way that strikes me as completely irrational. What does she GAIN by her loyalty? That's what I want to know.
Do you think she and Cel fuck? I don't get that vibe between them but it could also be that I find thinking of Siobhan sexually impossible.
I wasn't thinking of ambition above her station...more as in getting Cel onto the throne. She'd have an immense amount of power and get to torture and kill whomever she wanted as Captain of the King's guard. And as for rationalizing her actions, it's beyond me. I guess she ascribes to the Nazi Faerie hate platform and he's the man to further it. I must have mentally made her asexual, because I never thought of her and Cel.
But Cel likes 'em dead (ah, necrophilia) so I'd think she'd be a little too fiesty for him. Although he did do whatever he wanted to the women around him...
No, thinking about it, I don't think so. He'd only bed someone for the thrill of watching them quiver in fear. She certainly wouldn't do that.
Hmmm I hadn't thought of that. Of all the possible desires, I think that's most likely. She just wants the freedom to be as horrible as possible. Nice insight! But it's still pretty inhuman (and scary!) to me.She definitely strikes me as asexual, too. But the implication is that Cel fucks all of his guard, which is why I wonder. Also, she personifies Death, so you'd think that'd be a super turn-on for Cel. I also don't think Cel ONLY likes them dead - it's just another dish he likes to sample, while still enjoying a variety of sadistic acts.
However, you make a very good point that he wouldn't be able to get his sadistic rocks off with Siobhan, so that's the strongest argument that they don't have sex. Maybe Merry could turn Siobhan against Cel and she could finish him off...that'd be a satisfying ending for him!
For such a horrific topic, I find myself laughing. Yes, new_user. LKH likes her horror! He does seem to have bedded all the females in his guard, mainly against their will. I'm trying to remember when he was chucked in jail and who (besides Merry) he would have tried to get pregnant. I'm pulling a blank on his attempt at procreation. Was there any? Did he have time, once the challenge was issued?
And no, I don't think he's only into dead girls, but good lord that's a scene that stays with you!
I remember thinking he and Siobhan share the same lovely ideals...and now that I ponder it further, WAS she a candidate for mother to his heir, being that their goals were so similar? Time for a re-read, methinks.
I'm not sure if he had sex with anyone prior to being imprisoned, though it seems likely. Siobhan is never mentioned one way or another as a potential heir, but given the necessity of procreating with anyone - even a goblin/brownie! - you'd think Cel would definitely be trying with Siobhan, especially since they see eye to eye and she's 'pure'.
Exactly! I thought of the "purity-based" sex as I was writing the Faerie Nazi comment. Considering everything, he may win status as Most Reprehensible Character, with her as a close second.
And everyone on this thread who hasn't read Merry Gentry now thinks you and I are quite mad. I swear folks, it's not ALL sadism. Not 100%, at least...
I doubt anyone who reads PNR is surprised by much! We all read a lot of wacky stuff, as far as I can tell.Mmmmm sadism. Well, fictionally at least. :D
LOL @ Faerie Nazi
Wacky stuff...ain't that the truth!Ah, the glorious world of fae, vamp, and shifter sex. What wonders we experience.
I draw the line at doing it furry. I have enough issues with men with back hair. All over hair! Aack! Eek!
Andais's saving grace is that she loves Cel. Good thing too because he's something only a mother could love.
I just finished book 3 of the Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur. I'm thinking I might want slap Jack.
I just thought of someone else to smack on the basis of wanting to beat sense into them.Joanna Archer from the Signs of the Zodiac series!
Now, dear. I know you did not ask for this duty that has been thrust upon you, oh reluctant heroine. I know you've had to endure massive changes. And I know that you love your boyfriend and wish you could be with him.
But when hanging around him all the time only serves to make him a target and put his life in danger?
Selfish!
Plus her treatment of hot man who makes weapons, whose name I cannot recall in the slightest...she's quite unfair to the poor bloke.
Andais also loves her people - I think THAT's her saving grace.I don't understand this 'furry' thing. *hides*
Julia, yes, she does love her people...in her own wonderfully warped fashion. She's really quite a delish character for all her frightening ways. Don't understand furry...you get back here, young lady!
Lol

YES. I made it about two chapters into the first book, and when the main character describes her DD bra size, stiletto heels, and "J-LOesque butt," I gave up. There's no way I can possibly take that seriously.

The Discriminating Fangirl: "DD bra size, stiletto heels, and "J-LOesque butt," Well at least her ass balances out her breasts. Guess that makes walking in the heels possible.
Guess what book I won't be reading!
Lol

I've only read two Breed books, but I agree with your opinion on Jonas. I also had that flashed in my head, like, just wait when you get your "own" mate, and let's see how cold and calculating you can still be...Can't wait to read his "downfall"...LOL

Just the very brief interactions they've had in the most recent book tells me it's going to be soooo much fun!
I've got one and I can't believe I forgot him. Because he was probably singlehandedly responsible for killing the buzz of the year.
The Wizard. From Lover Enshrined. Phury's Mate. Did you want to choke a bitch after the first ten pages? Because I did.
And also, what? A wizard? What? Who understood that? Can it be explained in a way that doesn't make me want to cut someone?
And more also, anthropomorphising inner dialogue? Maybe. Doing it with a repetitive stream of consciousness that only says the one thing? Over and over and over and, oh jesus, over again?
Take me home, Lord.

I hated the Wizard too! Geez, I completely forgot about that! I forget things I don't want to remember! LOL. That was one of the worst devices I've seen yet. Ugh. Gimme a break.
I just read all of the BDB books and I don't remember a wizard. Was the wizard so bad that I repressed the memories of reading about him?
Lori wrote: "I just read all of the BDB books and I don't remember a wizard. Was the wizard so bad that I repressed the memories of reading about him? "The Wizard was the voice in Phury's head that was constantly telling him what a loser he was. He was in Lover Enshrined.
thanks for remeinding me. I forgot about the wizard. I thought of him like the devil on your shoulder- an aspect of Phury's personality
Oh, yeah. I don't know how I forgot that. I guess I just forgot that he called that voice the Wizard. I remember thinking that it was an odd choice as a name for his evil voice.
Wow Nessa--Heifer Goddess and Cel--that's quite something to picture. The problem is--they'd probably get along great and then try to take over everything. Of course, we could also send Semi along to take care of the 2 of them. After all, a girl(demon) does have to eat, right?

I know, hum, you think that Simi would get upset with us if we designed ourselves some Semi wear? Tattoo-ish looking dragon on one side, Simi's beautiful face on the other? Maybe a warning about turning people we don't like into a midafternoon snack?

okay I'm on book 7 of the Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur- this chick is currently lusting after a guy who kissed her and then drugged her with a poison ring- Already, I want to slap her. If anything develops here, I'm going to reach through the book and spay the stupid bitch!Really, I'm all for romance and titallating scenes where the female lead lets herself go with the male lead- Most times I'm thinking- FINALLY!!
But this woman is totally thinking with her nether regions...
HELLO!!! HE DRUGGED YOU! SLAP!!!
Irene wrote: "okay I'm on book 7 of the Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur- this chick is currently lusting after a guy who kissed her and then drugged her with a poison ring- Already, I want to slap her. If any..."Drugging? Ack!
But see, that's how I felt about Cormia and Phury. She should have kicked him to the curb after the whole theater debacle. Bastage.
yep- Cormia could get a little irritating- but than so could Phury. I thought he should man up and do the job he signed up for. Rather, he dismantled the Chosen. Now, Ms Ward makes that all work out in the end- but it seems to me the Chosen didn't come about lightly and to dismantle it because you didn't want to do what you said you would seems selfish and ill considered. I don't think he was thinking about those other women that were trapped in the life style. I think he was thinking about himself and how HE didn't want to get trapped in a lifestyle.Now- what they going to do? place personal ads in the paper? "Help! have eggs and a ticking biological timeclock... Please Call" "PS we're virigins... mostly anyway"
There's going to repercussion and consequences- I don't think Phury considered the scope of what he was doing.
