For those of you who are not familiar with Beckett you should check out his blog. I really enjoy reading his posts. They are pretty thought provoking: http://bernardbeckett.wordpress.com/

I am starting this book tonight!

Kit Kat I think the plot goes pretty slowly, but the conversations Art has with Adam are pretty entertaining and gets me thinking. Wbu?

Samantha Wogensen | 1 comments I really liked how he went back and forth between the present and the past of Genesis' history. I think it's clever that the name of the main character is Adam other than Anaximander.

Cathie (catitude) I loved this book. One of my all time favourite reads! Amazing!

Cathie (catitude) Angie, thank you very much for getting Bernard Beckett to answer questions with us in this group. I don't know how you did it, but hats off and kudos to you for doing so!

YEAH! Thanks! Author Q&As are sooo fun and make the book so much more entertaining!

Grace (gdaminato) | 520 comments I like the way the story of The Republic is framed within the defense of a dissertation.

It's also interesting that many of the names are of ancient Greek philosophers and statesmen.

I thought the story was framed interestingly too. I'm less than halfway through because I'm listening to it rather than reading it because my library didn't own the book, only the audiobook version. I'm really wondering where it's going because of it.

Surprised at how short this book is but perfect and to the point. I think it is a good Dystopian novel, different then any I have read so far.

Meaghan | 7 comments I'm only about forty pages in but so far I'm excited about the story and I'm enjoying how everything is being laid out. I have to admit the severity of the society is terrifying and the level of isolationism is intense. Can't wait to see where things will go!

I'm also listening to the audiobook for the same reason! It took me a while to get used to the British accent at first, but I really like the way it's being read. So far I have been intrigued, puzzled, and horrified, and I'm not even a quarter of the way through. It seems like I'm off to a good start with this book!

M.L. Space (MLSpace) | 15 comments I think it is a good quick read. I'm enjoying it, including the play on the characters' names.

I always love to read about people who are listening to the audio. I would've never thought the character would be speaking with a British accent!

Actually, I think it's probably a New Zealander's accent. It didn't sound quite British to me and it makes sense given the author's background. But I could be wrong.

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) That would make sense - I always get confused between British and New Zealand/Australian accents.

It could also be Australian. I listened to the recording information after I finished and it seems to have been recorded in Australia. But I honestly can't tell the difference between Australian and New Zealand accents. I know they exist, but I only really hear the difference if there are two people from each area speaking in conversation.
