Has anyone started to read this one yet? If so we have to talk!!!

message 3: by Lys (new) - added it

Lys (lysrowan) I just got it in the mail yesterday. I was thinking I might start it tomorrow if grading papers doesn't take too long.

Oh. No! That does not sound good! Lol. I can't start on it this week but I'm looking forward to this - maybe.

I don't want to ruin it for anyone because I disliked it but I would love to discuss it with someone.

Hopefully I will have a better chance of liking Etiquette & Espionage for one of the BOTM's. :/

Rebecka I picked it up from the library and the cover is gorgeous!! I won't be able to get to it for another week though. I don't think I ever even read the synopsis before it became BOTM so I don't really have any expectations..

Lori McKinley (loriwatsonstories) | 8 comments I loved, loved, loved this book. Flew through it and read it in afternoon. This would make an excellent (Tim Burton?) movie, I could see the images in my mind as I read. Loved Alyssa, loved Jeb, and really loved Morpheus. I can't wait for the sequel. :)

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 247 comments I agree with Lori: it would make quite a good movie (although, wel, Tim Burton having already made his version of Alice, maybe by someone else?).

message 10: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori McKinley (loriwatsonstories) | 8 comments Good point, I was just thinking that he has the quirk factor to make this work. It needs to keep the goth/fae/creepy feel without becoming too dark and without losing the humor. :)

Going to start this weekend - maybe tonight - or tomorrow. Love Alice in Wonderland. Hope it's fun.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes! Finally started. Been trying since the start of the month.
Have read up to Chapter 7,
I like it so far. I like instead of being a direct retelling or updated Alice In Wonderland it blends truth with fiction. I also like the idea that each 'Alice' in the family is cursed with craziness. I like that Wonderland is not the friendly and cute Disneyland version of Wonderland.
One thing I don't like so far - one big thing - is Jeb. He is annoying me with his big brother/father act.

"I've been collecting bugs since I was ten; it's the only way I can stop their whispers. Sticking a pin through the gut of an insect shuts it up pretty quick."

I sort of loved this first line. Funny - and more than a little creepy at the same time.

Chapter 11 -
Shrug. I'm just not feeling this book. And I'm not sure why. I love Wonderland. Love retellings like this. But -
The Good: I like this darker Wonderland. I like how everyone is different than the reader expects. I like Alice/Hatter stories but it is nice to see something different for once. And I love the idea that Allie needs to fix everything Alice did to break the curse.
The Bad: Wonderland is so different, it is almost too different. It is as though with minor changes this wouldn't even have to be a Wonderland story at all. Also still not liking Jeb. He is just way too protective for me. And I don't like Morpheus either. Kind of hard to get into a story where I dislike both potential love interests.

I'll message you so we can chat. I did and didn't like it at the same time, but I'm dying to talk about it with someone.

If you're trying to keep down on spoilers you can use the spoiler tag...

Enter this (in case you don't know) -
< spoiler> put message here. < / spoiler>
Just don't use any spaces for the brackets.

I'd love to hear your & Tt's thoughts as well -

All this time and I didn't know that I could do that lol.

I think because I had such high expectations going into it (I've been waiting for this book to come out for months) it kind of let me down when it didn't live up to those standards...and gorgeous cover. I also don't really like the Alice in Wonderland movies so maybe that had something to do with it. I almost DNFed it, but I'm glad I didn't because once it got to the part where we find out Morpheus' true intentions and (view spoiler)I was actually very intruiged. Too bad that's like the last three chapters lol. But I'm hoping book two will be better because it'll be a fresh start and not based on the original Alice in Wonderland so much. Maybe she'll (view spoiler) But it all ended too perfectly for such a chaotic book.

Lol, I will post me and Mellissa's conversation because every time I talk about this book I get upset because at the end of my disappointment is a beautiful cover!

I'm at the 75% mark. Should be done tonight then I can join in. I do like Alice in Wonderland - just not this one.
I did like the creepy Mad Hatter though - yikes!!

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished!

I'm feeling kind of... Wow about now... I knew 'something' was coming but I didn't guess this. Good twist at the end... Very good twist.
(view spoiler) Regarding Morpheous, the character had interesting potential but I have to feel as though the author failed here. And that was my pain issue with the whole book. I think I would've liked to have seen a little of their past together, more than what we saw. And I do think in his own way he cared, though he was also selfish, but the end result came rather sudden I thought. As did the whole end. Shrug. I don't mind the end but it was too quickly thrown together in my opinion. And Jeb? I never got more than a big brother feeling from him.
There were many things I liked about the book, the soul collecting dolls is one that stands out, and I thought the book was unique and imaginative. And I agree, I sort of would like to see where the author takes it now.

Elise (redentrapy) | 338 comments Wow I loved this book. Especially Morpheus *swoon*.
Here's my review on it: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Melissa I'm still having a hard time getting in to this one...

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Have you gotten to Wonderland? The book picks up some after that.

Rebecka I'm about halfway through, and I'm liking it so far. I wonder if (view spoiler) I don't really see it as an Alice in Wonderland retelling, more of a story based on Alice.

Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...

I dont think that it has spoilers but I wont make any promises!!

Belle (pandibelle) | 1 comments great book finished in a day just couldn't put it down.

Watched the Tim Burton Alice movie for the first time last night - I know one of the last ones to see it. And afterward I felt I owed this book an apology. This was so much better in my opinion. I liked Splintered but I was hoping for more from it. I didn't like Jeb - at all. And thought Morpheous was too quickly introduced. I might read the next one though - when it comes out.

Tanecia (books101) | 3773 comments Mod
What are you guys expecting from the second installment?

Please use (view spoiler) so we wont give any spoilers from the first book! :D

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I want more of the relationship between 'Alice' and Morpheous (I think I spell that name wrong and different everytime. Lol). I don't want to be told they're close. I want to see it. I want more of the parents story too. Maybe how the legend came about too. There's a lot of potential actually.

Tracey (addicted_to_reading) i hated this book

Melissa (melstephensbooks) I want to see their relationship too. And I want Alyssa (view spoiler) .I'm excited to see what it'll be like now that it won't be based heavily on a different story.
