why is it that the main character is always the hottie or badass

cause that makes it all that much more interesting and awesome :)
Because badass (strong, courageous, determined) characters are far more interesting. I much prefer a pro-active protagonist to someone who sits around waiting for the story to come to her.
Sydney is not a hottie or badass. She's just your regular girl--who can do magic and is very smart. But maybe that's the reasons a lot of us like Rose so much more.

I agree with Chloe, there would be no point in the book if they weren't. It annoys me when the characters do something stupid that no one in their right mind would actually do, but without it the story wouldnt go anywhere

It's just that I see Rose getting a lot of hate on the various threads and reviews. She gets accused of using Adrian and maybe that's true, but I don't really care. I don't like Adrian that much. Forget Team Dimitri or Team Adrian...TEAM ROSE FOR LIFE!
