A. Sehar | 13 comments I read for leisure, and in return I am granted with an opportunity of escaping this troublesome world. The genre of adventure/mystery fulfills my desire of "stepping into different shoes", and embarking on a journey that I am unlikely to face in reality. State of Wonder, written by Ann Patchett, seems to be a novel of such kind.

Ann Patchett is an acclaimed author of total eight novels. She is also a recipient of awards such as the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize for fiction-works. The majority of her novels are best-sellers. State of Wonder has also been considered a New York Times Bestseller. It has also been nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards 2013.

The great claims and reviews of this novel have helped shape my decision of choosing this novel. The New York Times defines State of Wonder as “... an engaging, consummately told tale.” Publishers Weekly classifies it as “an expansive page-turner ... this fluid prose dissolves in the suspense of this out-there adventure ... that readers will hate to see end.” The various reviews and accounts are not the sole basis of my choice. State of Wonder also consists of an intriguing plot. I was able to make this conclusion after reading many summaries. Scientific discoveries, that hold the potential of changing man kind and the Amazonian jungle are intriguing aspects, that I have found extremely alluring.

Patchett is a highly credible writer. I have found her writing to be very fruitful in terms of insight and motives. She seems to present her genius ideas in a clear and concise manner. Based upon a few excerpts I have also realized the plentiful presence of imagery (sights and sounds) in the novel.

I have chosen When She Woke as my second novel. It is a highly acclaimed novel, and written by an award winning author, Hillary Jordan. This piece of her work can be classified as science-fiction/adventure.

The reasoning behind my choice of this novel lies, in the various themes, and motifs I was able to detect simply through reviews. I was intrigued by a seemingly academic theme, which highlights the issues that exist between: religion, state, and personal preference(freedoms). I have seen a direct correlation between this theme, and the events/similar situations that can be seen in many societies that exist upon this planet.

New York Time's review statement regarding this novel was a source of attraction to me as well. It claims that this novel "holds its own alongside the dark inventions of Margaret Atwood and Ray Bradbury." To any "avid and aware" reader, this proves to be an attractive shout-out, and it makes the resistance from When She Woke, completely impossible.
