"The Wind Through the Keyhole" by Stephen King, Book 4.5 of the "Dark Tower" series.
"In a storytelling tour de force, Stephen King explores an uncharted corner of the Dark Tower universe—and the early days of the gunslinger Roland—with the twice-told tale of a murderous shape-shifter, a “skin-man,” who inspires fear and wonder, fantasies and bedtime stories, and one boy’s savagely real nightmares."

When I read her homage to Janette Oke's novel, Love Comes Softly, at the beginning, I admit to feeling some apprehension, but thankfully, Connealy didn't ape Oke's writing style at all. She borrowed a few plot elements and created a new story of her own with really likable characters. I found her writing to be quite good for the genre, and I liked how (view spoiler) ["br"]>

This was a really sweet Christian romance, and it's written well for the genre. The characters are drawn well and are likable. It was a quick but very good read.

It's a good book, don't let the amount of time it took me to read it deter you. My life has been crazy busy! It helps if you know your Christian Theology a little too.

I have determined that Janette Oke is one of my favorite authors by far. Her writing is good for the genre, and I like her writing style a lot. Her characters are well drawn and are likable. This book is a good beginning to her Canadian West series.

As Maven's involvement deepens, two worrisome things happen: he begins to suspect that their leader has a sinister ulterior motive, and he lusts after the leader's girl--a tough former model with a drug problem. As the rip-off jobs get riskier, Maven and his crew are soon pursued by both a smart federal DEA agent and by a pair of psychopathic Jamaican hit men on a drug lords' payroll. When everything goes bad--and it goes very bad--Maven embarks on a one-man crusade to right the wrongs in which he unwittingly participated. Not everyone will survive his crusade, and Maven himself may not live to see the final outcome....

Just finished The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann. Good read. I liked how Grann compared his trip with Percy Fawcett, who had disappeared in the Amazon in 1925. While the preparations and equipment were different, the trip once in the Amazon are remarkably similar. Worth reading.

"August: Osage County" by Tracy Letts

"One of the most bracing and critically acclaimed plays in recent Broadway history, August: Osage County is a portrait of the dysfunctional American family at its finest—and absolute worst. When the patriarch of the Weston clan disappears one hot summer night, the family reunites at the Oklahoma homestead, where long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed. The three-act, three-and-a-half-hour mammoth of a play combines epic tragedy with black comedy, dramatizing three generations of unfulfilled dreams and leaving not one of its thirteen characters unscathed."

"Griffin has been tooling around for nearly a year with his father’s ashes in the trunk, but his mother is very much alive and not shy about calling on his cell phone. She does so as he drives down to Cape Cod, where he and his wife, Joy, will celebrate the marriage of their daughter Laura’s best friend. For Griffin this is akin to driving into the past, since he took his childhood summer vacations here, his parents’ respite from the hated Midwest. And the Cape is where he and Joy honeymooned, in the course of which they drafted the Great Truro Accord, a plan for their lives together that’s now thirty years old and has largely come true. He’d left screenwriting and Los Angeles behind for the sort of New England college his snobby academic parents had always aspired to in vain; they’d moved into an old house full of character; and they’d started a family. Check, check and check.
But be careful what you pray for, especially if you manage to achieve it. By the end of this perfectly lovely weekend, the past has so thoroughly swamped the present that the future suddenly hangs in the balance. And when, a year later, a far more important wedding takes place, their beloved Laura’s, on the coast of Maine, Griffin’s chauffeuring two urns of ashes as he contends once more with Joy and her large, unruly family, and both he and she have brought dates along. How in the world could this have happened?"

"Baseball on the West Coast dates back to 1847, when the New York Volunteer Regiment stationed in Santa Barbara batted around a cowhide-covered ball with a stick made from a mesquite branch. By 1873, "Venturans" were playing baseball at Seaside Park. The first local player to reach the major leagues was Charley Hall, who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds in 1906, followed by Fred Snodgrass, who brought along his New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox to Ventura County in 1913. The county has produced a major-league Most Valuable Player in Terry Pendleton, who won the honor in 1991 as the leader of the Atlanta Braves, and a No. 1 overall draft pick in Delmon Young, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003. The county has also served as the home for minor-league teams affiliated with the Yankees, Braves, and Blue Jays."

Again, I was very impressed with Lisa See's writing. Her characters are well drawn, and the readers get drawn into the story emotionally. The plot was interesting and informative, entertaining and full of unexpected twists. I really loved it.

:) They had an author interview on the DVD of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan that my husband and I watched a few months ago. I was impressed and got started on the books. I actually found Snow Flower and the Secret Fan at Goodwill and bought it with my Christmas money. The copy was pristine, like it hadn't even been read. I was surprised such a new book was there at all, let alone in such good condition.

Although this novel took me a while to get through, it was worth it although it will never be a beloved favorite. The book was well written, but the writing style was a little hard to follow at times as it was mostly descriptive narrative and random reminiscing by the "English patient" in not really any particular order. It went back and forth in time quite a lot and while I learned something about each of the characters, I learned much more about the places and times. It was interesting but not amazing.

We are closing on our house next week so I probably won't get too much reading done in the next few weeks.
