Tate Publishing is not a traditional publisher, but is a considered a vanity press. They accept all manuscripts and make their money by convincing authors to buy expensive production packages (not by selling books to the public like legitimate publishers).

The latest from Tate is that "successful" writers are expected to pay $4,000 for "marketing". There are numerous discussion threads on writers forums about Tate's practices and their use of hard sell tactics to try and convince their authors to buy more books and over priced services.

Terrence Baker (TerrenceLBaker) | 4 comments I used Author House with my second title: A Look in the Mirror and its doing really well on the ebook platform. They offer a lot of marketing services and are really hands on with the whole process; however, they are a bit pricey. The book is selling well but only available as POD through the chain stores so most of my sales come from the ebook platform...

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments I also sell my books on Createspace, Book Depository and Barnes & Noble, though any royalties only come from CS and Amazon. Still, those are the main places worth mentioning as I'm sure lots of authors books are on those sites as well.

Ed Morawski | 243 comments You can also do LULU.com which does hard copy plus Apple and Barnes & Noble.

I sell on average twice as many ebooks on iTunes than on Amazon. B&N is a distant 3rd.
