Elizabeth (ejnorton) | 19 comments Loved, Loved, Loved this one! I mixed media, so to speak, because I owned the book but the audio was on the Amazing Audios list. The audio was truly fabulous and creepy (perhaps not quite the thing for late-night long commutes?!), but as I got closer to the end I needed to know how it ended, so I finished the last 75 pages in print rather than drive around my block making my neighbors suspicious. Fantastic world-building and can't wait to see where the series goes next.

Karl (yoyology) | 21 comments This was nominated for a Bram Stoker award for horror. I've not read it yet (long hold list) but I've heard a lot about it and didn't think it was a horror novel. What do you think?

Elizabeth (ejnorton) | 19 comments I don't think it's horror in the classic sense, but it is truly creepy, particularly the audio (narrator January LaVoy is a new favorite of mine). It also deals deeply with the occult, the Rapture, the return of the Beast/final battle of good and evil. I was surprised to see it on the Stoker list, but it is a great book.

Brooke | 3 comments Can we talk about the length of this book? I really expected to love this book (Libba Bray! The 20s! Occult!) but it was so, so, so very long. There were many scenes in this book that felt extraneous (the KKK scene comes to mind immediately) and I really wish this book had been a little tighter. The creepy parts were really creepy and atmospheric, and there were many good ideas in there, but it was a 578 page book and I was kind of exhausted by the time I got to the end.

I loved it too. I thought it was very scary, but I'm a big chicken. I loved all of the different characters and can't wait to see where all of the story lines go. Memphis was my favorite, followed by Theta (so what happened there made me especially happy).

Brooke, it was definitely long, but I didn't think it was too much. It took me an extra long time to read, but I've been in the process of moving and I couldn't read it too late at night - my typical reading time - because, like I said, I'm just a big chicken.

Diane | 32 comments Thinking about whether The Diviners fits into the horror genre reminded me how frustrating genre labels can be! I also thought it was wonderfully creepy and atmospheric, and the imagery was vividly horrific at times...so maybe horror? But it was set so perfectly back in time...so historical fiction? And there were some pretty fantastical elements...Argh!

Susan | 1 comments The main character was annoying- I never want to see pos-i-tutely again! It's too bad because I loved the plot and the atmosphere.
