There are many, many, many multiple listopias. There are probably dozens of lists that duplicate one single idea. GR has never consolidated listopias. It may seem sensible, but you also have to consider the complexity: what if you've voted on many of those lists, what if you've voted for 100 books on each, how does GR decide which of your votes stay and which go? Do comments on the listopias get consolidated, or do they all get deleted except for the comments on the one surviving list?

As far as the bought/read list you meantioned, is this the list? If so, it looks to me like it's more of an armchair trip to New Orleans than actual books they bought or read during a trip.

i understand the dilemma now, but do think that it might be in GR's bandwidth-interests to periodically merge multiple lists into one uber-list.
the votes could be weighted and consolidated and the comments could be carried over to the newly made list. but maybe that's more trouble than it's worth.

Not sure if merged how those settings would get managed or which list owner would become the owner ofvthe newly merged list.

what does being a list "owner" entail? i created two lists so far and can't tell what special powers, if any, i have over those lists.

As list creator you can make edits to the list (as allowed by GR rules) and you can decide/determine the parameters of the list, which you should include in the description so people know what types of books to vote for and not vote for.

Also, there is a list that someone made in which they listed the books they bought/read during their NOLA trip. That seems like something that should go in a user's bookshelf, not a publicly viewable list. (not sure what the official policy is on such personalized lists, but I for one don't care what so-and-so read when on their NOLA trip)
