❀Abbi and Melanie❀ Unrivaled by Siri Mitchell

Abbi Well I guess I'll go ahead and start!

I wasn't sure what to think at the start and it took me a little to get into but I'm really enjoying it now!

I really like Charlie! Though I wish he'd stand up to his father more since he knows what they are doing to the Kendalls is wrong.

I think it is cool how much the Kendall's employees love their boss! I love when the bosses care more about their workers than the money!

Lucy's mom is annoying me with her pushing Lucy to get married and the fact that she wants to sell the candy business. I mean you can kinda see where she's coming from but I wish she'd care more about her husband and daughter's feelings.

It did take a little bit to grab my attention, too, but I'm liking this book a lot now. The whole candy aspect is really interesting and unique to me.

Me too.

Same here. It's really cool how much they love their boss. :) I also like how Kendall lets them eat the candy (unlike Warren).

Lucy's mom kind of annoys me too, but I also feel a little bad for her. She gave up her dreams for her husband and the candy company and now that business isn't doing well. I wish she would have been able to go with Lucy on her trip, since that is something she always wanted to do.

I thought it was kind of funny how Lucy didn't realize who Charlie was and liked him until she learned he was a Clarke.

I wonder what the whole agreement is between Mr. Clarke and Mr. Kendall. I do think Warren told Charlie the truth and there was an agreement, though I wonder why Lucy's father didn't tell her.

It must have been very weird for Lucy when she came home and found things so different from when she had left - most of her friends married, her father ill, etc.

I'm wondering when Lucy is going to realize that Charlie is the "hardened criminal" from the newspaper she was reading at the beginning of this book.

Abbi Yeah that would have been cool if she was able to go!

Haha that amused me too!

I'm curious about that as well. I'm not quite sure if I fully believe Warren but I'm leaning more towards believing.

That would have been so weird! I would hate to come back and find that all of my friends were married or living somewhere else!

I'm wondering about that too! You'd think she'd have figured it out by now-though I guess he does look pretty different now.

Sam's a fun character! I like how he is willing to help Lucy with so much. I'm kinda curious as to the girl he's seeing is!

I feel bad for Lucy that none of her candy is anything that the general population would buy. Especially when everyone at the party hated it and threw it all away! Though I have to say most of what she was trying didn't really sound good to me!

I think it's funny how Lucy can't seem to remember which name is Alfred Arthur's first or last!

He is a fun character. I'm curious about the girl he's seeing too. I tend to think she is the maid Charlie was talking too - which would be ironic because then he's seeing someone who works for the enemy. :)

Yeah, I felt bad for her too. They did sound really different. :/

That is very funny! I can totally see how it would be confusing.

I loved the airplane scene! It was funny how everyone acted when they learned a President might be visiting. I loved how Lucy thought she would have done her hair better. :)

The whole Veiled Prophet Ball was really interesting. I wonder who the Veiled Prophet was, but I don't think we'll find out. Oh, and those ladies were so mean to Lucy! I couldn't stand their snide comments.

Abbi That was great!

It was interesting and I was slightly curious as well but I agree that we probably won't find out!

Lucy's idea of changing the packaging and separating the colors of Fancy Crunch and then charging 2 cents more seems a little strange to me. I personally wouldn't want to spend more on something just for it to look a little fancier.

Well I can't think of anything else-you?

Me too. I don't like that she plans on doing that. It's pretty much the same candy, just looks different, so charging more seems like a rip-off.

I can't think of anything else either. Looking forward to reading the last half. :)

Abbi Me too!

Abbi I'm finished but no rush, just let me know when you're done!

Just finished! I really, really liked this book! :)

I loved how Winnie acted a little bit like a matchmaker by talking to both Charlie and Lucy. The things she said to them were great.

I was surprised that Lucy's mom was the "spy" - I sort of thought it might be Sam. No idea why I thought that, though...

I thought it was funny how Lucy gave "Santa" fancy crunch instead of royal taffy and both of the newspaper headlines were comical. Loved the rivalry. :)

message 13: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi I really liked it too!

That was fun and I agree that the things she said to them were great. I loved how she was able to tell them what they needed to hear without sounding to preachy.

I was surprised as well and I too thought it might be Sam. I think that we were supposed to think that at least for the small portion of the story.

Haha yeah that was great!

The whole situation with Alfred Arthur was rather interesting. I was curious as to how they'd remove him from the picture but I have to say running of with a saloon girl didn't even enter my mind. I was glad that he got Charlie to work on spreading the word that the blame was all on him to protect Lucy.

I was really disappointed in how far Lucy was willing to stoop. Some of the things she did were really underhanded and she didn't think through the consequences. It was horrible how her cancelling the supplies took money away from all those families. Though I really think the Clarkes could have afforded paying for the couple days they didn't have work.

I liked how when it came to the rebuilding of the factory that Charlie stepped up and told his father how things should be done and wasn't willing to take no for an answer. The one thing that sorta bothered me was his refusal of letting the children work. I mean at first glance it sounds like a very good thing but you have to wonder how many of those kids were earning the only income for their families and will now have no money. I would have probably done the same thing, not letting them work, but it still makes you think.

It was interesting and his eloping Evelyn didn't cross my mind either. Yeah, I liked how he had Charlie spread the word the he was to blame, too.

I couldn't believe some of the things she did. It was horrible how she cancelled their order which made the workers not get paid. I agree, I think Warren could (and should) have paid them anyway - it wasn't their fault they were out of sugar.

I liked that too. I was glad he finally stood his ground with his father. I know what you mean, but now there would be more jobs available for the adults/parents. Plus the children got paid less and the work was hard.

I loved how Charlie didn't want Lucy to give Warren the new recipe - it was great how he said she didn't owe him anything. I'm glad she did give it, though, as it eased her conscience.

Lucy's reaction when she finally recalled that she had seen Charlie from the newspaper was really something! Even though I knew it had to come up eventually, I wasn't expecting it during that scene. :)

I liked the way Charlie made Lucy his partner instead of just buying the business from her.

message 15: by Abbi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Abbi Yeah I liked that too.

I wasn't expecting it then either. To have two shocks like that in one afternoon would be awful.

That was cool and I really liked how they made a new candy by blending their two kinds that was even better than the originals.

I know we already mentioned our surprise at the mom being the spy but I was also shocked to find out that it was her who arranged everything so that Warren could take over the first company! I really did not see that coming.

Sam and Jennie were a cute couple! And you were right about who the girl was! After thinking about it it really made sense why he would hide it from Lucy since in her previous state of mind she'd probably have flipped to discover he was seeing someone who worked for "the enemy".

It would be awful. I didn't really care for the way Arthur broke the news to her - the note was very vague.

That was surprising - also how Lucy's father knew about it and still said Warren "stole" it.

They were! Yeah, I can definitely see why Sam hid it from Lucy.

I loved when Lucy went to ask Sam to help her pull the candy again and he wouldn't do it. So funny! I also loved how she got Charlie to help. :)

Abbi Yeah I didn't like how he broke the news like that either!

Haha yeah!

Probably Courting Morrow Little, though I'm fine with either one. Would it be all right if we waited until next week to start? I have a few books I want to read/finish this weekend (including The Survivor by DiAnn Mills).
