Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Thanks, Lori!!

I just got it. It is a bit pricey to get all GH stuff as ebooks, especially after buying the physical book. I am always on the look out to get a good deal on any and all GH ebooks!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Anyone else on Bookbub? I finally got round to changing my info there from my long dead Kobo to Kindle & they have The Reluctant Widow for $1.99.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Susan wrote: "Never heard of it - what is it, all e-books?"

Yes I think the authors/publishing houses pay to be listed & there is a lot of demand for the spot. You click on the link & you are back at Kobo or Amazon, so it's just a way of finding good deals.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4146 comments Thanks very much - who amongst us is not looking for good deals on books?!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Carol, Thanks for explaining bookbub. I've seen it mentioned, but I didn't know what it was.

I'll look into joining.

RaiRaiKen | 76 comments I wonder if you can still find GH novels along with current books in bookstores. I buy mine from secondhand bookstores, and consider it very lucky if I do find a Source Book edition or a 2000s Arrow edition without scouring the whole store for an hour or two. Sometimes I go to betterworldbooks.com for pre-loved Heyer novels (free worldwide shipping), but they cost too much.

message 159: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Here in Virginia, USA, you can buy many of her romances, historicals and mysteries in stores. They are published by Sourcebooks, in trade paperback size. The mysteries are just as wide, but much shorter.

This link has images of the books that I can find in stores:

http://www.sourcebooks.com/store/fict...

They are much pricier than used, of course. Occasionally, there will be a special for a kindle version for about 4USD.

message 160: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments After glancing through the site from the link I left, I can see that there are several titles on sale for 4.20USD.

Beauvallet
Cousin Kate
Powder and Patch
Friday's Child
Foundling
Corinthian

*******They only ship to addresses in the USA******* Sorry, I just went to check the shipping and read that! I know we have a lot of people from everywhere in this group, so pretty much the last two posts are only useful if you have a USA shipping address.

Ceri | 103 comments You can buy her books in book shops in the UK, I had a look last time I was in one. Also for UK readers, mail order company The Book People had a set of five or six books that was really cheap, let me go and see if they still have it...

Yes they do, £5.99 for six books
The Convenient Marriage
Regency Buck
Faro's Daughter
Friday's Child
Frederica
The Grand Sophy

Hopefully the link will work: http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp...

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I feel for you RaiRaiKen (love your avatar btw) GH was massively popular in NZ.I haven't noticed her books in a retail shop for a while, but they turn up on a regular basis in op (charity) & dump shops. It is harder to get hold of her mysteries second hand, but I'm expecting to get all of them eventually other than maybe Footsteps in the Dark. & our equivalent to Ebay (TradeMe) has them new from online businesses, some based in Australia.

Thanks, Carol ^^

I can't afford to buy from Ebay/Amazon/Abebooks/online bookstores since I don't exactly have USDs with me. Besides, oftentimes the shipping fee costs more than the book itself. I managed to find GH novels that cost around $3 each, but the shipping fee for each book is $10. That'll burn a hole in my wallet for sure.

By the way, ladies, I recently read in one of the threads that Sourcebook alters GH's novels. I felt a little cheated (haha). I recently bought a set of GH Pan books and am wondering if Pan altered the books as well. Oh, and if Harper Collins altered them too.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Costs are an issue for me RRK - the NZ$= US65 cents last time I looked. The firms on TradeMe offer free shipping, but I'm doing OK so far getting books secondhand & I still have some of my Dad's old copies.

Your Pans should be OK. As a rule of thumb, any book with a publication date before her death should be alright. GH was a formidable personality & if she had seen the typos that Sourcebooks & Arrow have now she would have been at her typewriter firing off enraged letters. So far the worst typos I've struck are in These OLd Shades where some of her wittiest lines are ruined.

message 165: by RaiRaiKen (new)

RaiRaiKen | 76 comments Are GH books easy to find in NZ? I have a sister in NZ and asked her to buy me some GH novels (because at that time I lost hope of finding GH books in any of the bookstores where I'm from), but she told me she'd rather buy me clothes than books. That was a big disappointment for me.

Noooo! Arrow altered the novels? Good thing Pan books are easier to find than Arrow.

Typos are proofreading errors rather than deliberate alterations. I know some editions of Why Shoot a Butler have had a racist word removed.

We only have one decent bookshop in my smaall town & they don't stock GH, but we probably have reached saturation point here! :D

The op shop I volunteer at had heaps of her books & there are still a few hardcovers out the back. We get a lot of deceased estates books. Often same authors over & over. GH, Hammond Innes, Christie, Neville Shute, Victoria Holt.

Sourcebooks alters them? Uh oh. All of the physical copies I have except one are published by Sourcebooks! Oh no! The one non sourcebook is a Harlequin, and I have noticed some differences between the Harlequin and the e-book version of The Grand Sophy.

How do they alter them? What if all the GH I have read is not really the real GH? AAAAAAAAA!

message 168: by Howard (new)

Howard Brazee | 1 comments I have downsized, to a two-bedroom senior housing. One bedroom is wall-to wall books with my computer in the middle. I had to get rid of my vast majority of books when I moved here.

So all of my purchases are e-books. I first look for smaller companies that don't have DRM in the books. If I can't find that, I buy from Amazon and break the DRM. (I used to buy B&N, but it changed its DRM and I can't break it anymore, so I don't buy from them anymore).

Amazon has another advantage in that I set it up so any book I buy, shows up on my wife's Kindle as well.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Howard, I have an eBook reader app on my iPhone that will allow to read DRM books. It's called "Bluefire."

RaiRaiKen | 76 comments Finally received my parcel from the postman :) My GH Pan books are in the verge of disintegrating! I wouldn't be surprised though since they're more than 50 years old. Unfortunately, I believe I'll be required to wear a disposable surgeon's mask. The books smell funky, moldy, and my mother warned me about my allergies :(

message 172: by RaiRaiKen (new)

RaiRaiKen | 76 comments Critterbee, I also just recently learned about the alterations. But I have noticed the difference between a GH Pan book and Sourcebook. I'm not sure if it applies to anybody else, but Sourcebook seems to have simplified the original content so it'd be easier to read, while Pan--I had a bit of difficulty understanding the language.

They have great promos too :) I think they had this promo around August if you buy 3 books you get 1 for free. They also have a promo where you buy 3 books for around $10 - $12

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments I order from Better World Books all the time through half.com or AbeBooks - both U.S. and U.K. sites. They sell a lot of ex-library books. They don't always note it in the description and the books sometimes are not in perfect condition. They ship quickly though even overseas.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Don't forget thriftbooks.com.

They have similar promos to Betterworld books.

message 179: by Louise (new)

Louise Culmer i bought my first one - Sprig Muslin - at a fete at my secondary school when I was thirteen. most of the others I bought new over the next few years, they were easy to find in those days, W.H. Smith stocked them (always a sign of popularity) and even the local newsagent sometimes had one or two on their stand of books.

Love their prices! But international shipping fee can burn a hole in my wallet :( I usually buy Heyer from Better World, but I can't use their promos because I always lack $$$ and you need to buy at least 3 books to use the discounts and promo codes.

Right now, I scavenge in Facebook and look for online bookstores who sell secondhand books. But because I live in a country where almost no one knows who Heyer is, GH's books aren't available in their stores. So sad :(

Anyone tried Book Depository to buy their Heyer?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Secondhand books are all that I buy from thriftbooks.com.

Lori Mulligan Davis | 196 comments Super ebook sale!!!! More than a dozen Georgette Heyer Kindles are available for $1.99 TODAY courtesy of Sourcebooks. Here's the link:

message 185: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 196 comments I bought ten Georgette Heyer e-books today using the link I provided in my last post. And I only spent twenty dollars. I love e-books because they are searchable when I want to refer back to a quotation. Also they are easy for note taking. And if the Audible ever goes on sale, I get the deeply discounted companion price. Win/win.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments I already had approx 11 GH eBooks.

Today, I bought every one that I did not own.

Now I have all of her Regencies except "The Spanish Bride."

I'm really happy (since I haven't seen my credit card bill!), but when will TOS and DC be marked down?

message 187: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments I saw some Heyers for sale at a used/rare bookstore on Friday. They had an old paperback of Frederica, a hardcover of I think Royal Escape. They have RE listed on their website http://www.cellarstories.com/shop/cel...

I'm SO glad you got these. I'm thrilled to have 30 different GHs on my smartphone and Kindle. I hope everyone sees this brief sale.

message 189: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 196 comments I realize they're the imperfect Sourcebooks, but I do want to alert you that over a dozen are on sale today for $1.99 on Kindle.

message 190: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 196 comments This page on Amazon displays over a hundred 99-cent Audibles of classic works. Just make sure to use the link on the page, "purchase" first the free ebook (this specific edition) and then get the companion Audible. If you just go to Audible directly or purchase another version of the classic you'll pay full price. You can even delete the ebook later if you don't want it, but this version will let any bookmarks or notes you place on the Audible show up in the ebook (and vice, versa). http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html...

Kim (allthelovelypages) | 2 comments I'm new to Heyer, having only read Arabella. I want to get in on the kindle sale, can anyone recommend their top 5 favorite or must reads?

message 192: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I love Friday's Child, These Old Shades, Devil's Cub, The Grand Sophy, Venetia, Frederica, Sylvester, The Masqueraders...well, I could keep going, but those will get you going. I was lucky enough in Jr. High, HS that they did a massive reissue of them, and she was still writing then, so I got some original hardbacks, as well.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments These Old Shades and Devil's Cub are not a part of the sale (drat!).

message 194: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments OH, bad show! Maybe they are popular enough they held them back? Although, technically These Old Shades is Georgian rather than Regency...but I doubt the choices were that technical.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Devil's Cub is a Georgian as well.

I'm foot stomp in' mad that these two aren't on sale!

message 196: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments You are correct, styles had started to change by then, which is why I think Regency, but George III was still on the throne.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Dominic in DC was still wearing "Georgian" attire and Mary's dresses had "panniers.

DC still took place before the change in fashion.

Has sourcebooks really altered Heyer's writing? They seem to have plenty of cant left in them.
